Book excerpt: This book initially reviews the major feature representation and extraction methods and effective learning and recognition approaches, which have broad applications in the context of intelligent image search and video retrieval. It subsequently presents novel methods, such as improved soft assignment coding, Inheritable Color Space (InCS) and the Generalized InCS framework, the sparse kernel manifold learner method, the efficient Support Vector Machine (eSVM), and the Scale-Invariant Feature Transform (SIFT) features in multiple color spaces. Lastly, the book presents clothing analysis for subject identification and retrieval, and performance evaluation methods of video analytics for traffic monitoring. Digital images and videos are proliferating at an amazing speed in the fields of science, engineering and technology, media and entertainment. With the huge accumulation of such data, keyword searches and manual annotation schemes may no longer be able to meet the practical demand for retrieving relevant content from images and videos, a challenge this book addresses. This book initially reviews the major feature representation and extraction methods and effective learning and recognition approaches, which have broad applications in the context of intelligent image search and video retrieval. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A video image detection system (VIDS) is an advanced wide-area traffic monitoring system that processes input from a video camera. The Autoscope VIDS coupled with an information management system was selected as the monitoring device because testing had shown it to be the most advanced system available with respect to performance, reliability, and accuracy. The purpose of this project was to evaluate the capabilities of the VIDS. The primary objective was to assess the performance of the VIDS for incident detection, and a secondary objective was to examine its capability to monitor traffic. Existing hardware was to be used for the VIDS as much as possible in order to fit the VIDS into the existing TMS Center operations and to minimize additional costs. Based on an evaluation that focused on traffic monitoring, the VIDS performed unsatisfactorily at two sites and satisfactorily at a third site. The location of the video camera relative to the monitoring site, which is critical to effective operations of the VIDS, was the major cause of the unsatisfactory performance. The primary objective was not achieved. The potential for using the Autoscope at existing camera locations in Northern Virginia is limited. Based on the performance of the Autoscope at the Woodrow Wilson Bridge, it was concluded that it is difficult to accurately return an Autoscope camera to its monitoring position after it is moved for surveillance. A dedicated camera is necessary for the VIDS. Recommendations were made for the use of the VIDS and for project planning and contract administration for future projects of this nature.

Book excerpt: Most vehicle detection today relies on inductive loop detectors. However, problems with installation and maintenance of these detectors have necessitated evaluation of alternative detection systems. Replacing loops with better detectors requires a thorough evaluation of the alternatives. This research included examination of the performance characteristics, reliability, and cost of these technologies. The detection technologies included in this study were: video image detection, radar, Doppler microwave, passive acoustic, and a system based on inductive loops. Research results clearly indicate promising non-intrusive alternatives to loops, but their limitations must be understood. This research solicited information from a variety of agencies pertaining to installation and use of non-intrusive technologies and conducted field tests on a high volume freeway to determine their suitability for implementation. Findings indicate that non-intrusive detectors have improved since recent detector research sponsored by the Texas Department of Transportation. Count accuracies of 95% and speed accuracies within 5 mph of true values are common during free-flow conditions. During slower congested flow traffic, all non-intrusive device count accuracies degraded to the range of 70 to 90%, and most speed accuracies worsened as well--differing by 10 to 30 mph from the baseline system.

Survey results indicate a strong support for HOV lanes. A need for outreach programs to promote the benefits of lanes is discussed. Also, stricter enforcement, construction of direct on-ramps and off-ramps and installation of prominent signs to increase public awareness is recommended.

Book excerpt: An intelligent transportation system (ITS) offers considerable opportunities for increasing the safety, efficiency, and predictability of traffic flow and reducing vehicle emissions. Sensors (or detectors) enable the effective gathering of arterial and controlled-access highway information in support of automatic incident detection, active transportation and demand management, traffic-adaptive signal control, and ramp and freeway metering and dispatching of emergency response providers. As traffic flow sensors are integrated with big data sources such as connected and cooperative vehicles, and cell phones and other Bluetooth-enabled devices, more accurate and timely traffic flow information can be obtained. The book examines the roles of traffic management centers that serve cities, counties, and other regions, and the collocation issues that ensue when multiple agencies share the same space. It describes sensor applications and data requirements for several ITS strategies; sensor technologies; sensor installation, initialization, and field-testing procedures; and alternate sources of traffic flow data. The book addresses concerns related to the introduction of automated and connected vehicles, and the benefits that systems engineering and national ITS architectures in the US, Europe, Japan, and elsewhere bring to ITS. Sensor and data fusion benefits to traffic management are described, while the Bayesian and Dempster–Shafer approaches to data fusion are discussed in more detail. ITS Sensors and Architectures for Traffic Management and Connected Vehicles suits the needs of personnel in transportation institutes and highway agencies, and students in undergraduate or graduate transportation engineering courses.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In an increasingly globalised world, despite reductions in costs and time, transportation has become even more important as a facilitator of economic and human interaction; this is reflected in technical advances in transportation systems, increasing interest in how transportation interacts with society and the need to provide novel approaches to understanding its impacts. This has become particularly acute with the impact that Covid-19 has had on transportation across the world, at local, national and international levels. Encyclopedia of Transportation, Seven Volume Set - containing almost 600 articles - brings a cross-cutting and integrated approach to all aspects of transportation from a variety of interdisciplinary fields including engineering, operations research, economics, geography and sociology in order to understand the changes taking place. Emphasising the interaction between these different aspects of research, it offers new solutions to modern-day problems related to transportation. Each of its nine sections is based around familiar themes, but brings together the views of experts from different disciplinary perspectives. Each section is edited by a subject expert who has commissioned articles from a range of authors representing different disciplines, different parts of the world and different social perspectives. The nine sections are structured around the following themes: Transport Modes; Freight Transport and Logistics; Transport Safety and Security; Transport Economics; Traffic Management; Transport Modelling and Data Management; Transport Policy and Planning; Transport Psychology; Sustainability and Health Issues in Transportation. Some articles provide a technical introduction to a topic whilst others provide a bridge between topics or a more future-oriented view of new research areas or challenges. The end result is a reference work that offers researchers and practitioners new approaches, new ways of thinking and novel solutions to problems. All-encompassing and expertly authored, this outstanding reference work will be essential reading for all students and researchers interested in transportation and its global impact in what is a very uncertain world. Provides a forward looking and integrated approach to transportation Updated with future technological impacts, such as self-driving vehicles, cyber-physical systems and big data analytics Includes comprehensive coverage Presents a worldwide approach, including sets of comparative studies and applications
