Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Colorado River had one of the most unique fish communities in the world. Seventy-five percent of those species were found nowhere else in the world. Settlement of the lower basin brought dramatic change to both the river and its native fish. Those changes began more than 120 years ago as settlers began stocking nonnative fishes. By 1930, nonnative fish had spread throughout the lower basin and replaced native communities. All resemblance of historic river conditions faded with the construction of Hoover Dam in 1935 and other large water development projects. Today, few remember what the Colorado River was really like. Seven of the nine mainstream fishes are now Federally-protected as endangered. Federal and state agencies are attempting to recover these fish. However, progress has been frustrated due to the severity of human impact. This report represents testimony, old descriptions, and photographs describing the changes that have taken place in hopes that it will provide managers, biologists, and the interested public a better appreciation of the environment that shaped these unique fish.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This compilation catalogues the writings on the diverse vertebrate species within Colorado's boundaries beginning with the Escalante Expedition, which skirted the western slope a century before Colorado's statehood. Because of its geographical location-between East and West, North and Southwest, its altitudinal range of more than 11,000 feet, and its consequent variety of ecosystems from desert shrub to alpine tundra, Colorado ranks high among the fifty states for its variety of vertebrates. With such an abundance of these vertebrates, biologists and observant laypersons have had much to write about. This comprehensive bibliography is divided into major sections: General Natural History, Fishes, Amphibians, Reptiles, Birds and Mammals. Each taxonomic group has a general section, followed by listings at taxon levels down to alphabetically-arranged species. The bibliography is especially complete with respect to periodical literature through 1995. Colorado Vertebrate Zoology cites resources for studying both well-researched vertebrates and those needing more study.

Book excerpt: This interdisciplinary volume examines how nine arid or semi-arid river basins with thriving irrigated agriculture are doing now and how they may change between now and mid-century. The rivers studied are the Colorado, Euphrates-Tigris, Jucar, Limarí, Murray-Darling, Nile, Rio Grande, São Francisco, and Yellow. Engineered dams and distribution networks brought large benefits to farmers and cities, but now the water systems face multiple challenges, above all climate change, reservoir siltation, and decreased water flows. Unchecked, they will see reduced food production and endanger the economic livelihood of basin populations. The authors suggest how to respond to these challenges without loss of food production, drinking water, or environmental health. The analysis of the political, hydrological, and environmental conditions within each basin gives policymakers, engineers, and researchers interested in the water/sustainability nexus a better understanding of engineered rivers in arid lands.

Book excerpt: Prepared for the 2013 National Climate Assessment and a landmark study in terms of its breadth and depth of coverage, Great Plains Regional Technical Input Report is the result of a collaboration among numerous local, state, federal, and nongovernmental agencies to develop a comprehensive, state of the art look at the effects of climate change on the eight states that encompass the Great Plains region. The Great Plains States are already experiencing the impacts of a changing climate, and will likely continue to experience warming temperatures, more extreme precipitation events, reduced snow and ice cover and rising relative sea levels. The book presents a review of the historic, current, and the projected future climate of the region; describes interactions with important sectors of the Northeast and examines cross-sectoral issues, namely climate change mitigation, adaptation, and education and outreach. Rich in science and case studies, it examines the latest climate change impacts, scenarios, vulnerabilities, and adaptive capacity and offers decision makers and stakeholders a substantial basis from which to make informed choices that will affect the well-being of the region's inhabitants in the decades to come.
