Book excerpt: A two-phase analytical investigation was conducted to continue the development and evaluation of the variable-diameter telescoping rotor aircraft (TRAC) rotor system. The first phase was a preliminary design of a full-scale, flightworthy rotor system suitable for subsequent wind tunnel testing in the NASA-Ames 40-by 80-foot wind tunnel and for flight testing on an H-3 helicopter or the NASA/Army Rotor Systems Research Aircraft (RSRA). The second phase of the investigation was a comparative parametric analysis to evaluate TRAC rotor compound helicopter and stowed rotor aircraft concepts relative to conventional-rotor pure and compound helicopters.

This book was released on 1996 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A full-scale helicopter rotor test was conducted in the NASA Ames 80- by 120-Foot Wind Tunnel with a four-bladed S-76 rotor system. Rotor performance and loads data were obtained over a wide range of rotor shaft angles-of-attack and thrust conditions at tunnel speeds ranging from 0 to 100 kt. The primary objectives of this test were (1) to acquire forward flight rotor performance and loads data for comparison with analytical results; (2) to acquire S-76 forward flight rotor performance data in the 80- by 120-Foot Wind Tunnel to compare with existing full-scale 40- by 80-Foot Wind Tunnel test data that were acquired in 1977; (3) to evaluate the acoustic capability of the 80- by 120- Foot Wind Tunnel for acquiring blade vortex interaction (BVI) noise in the low speed range and compare BVI noise with in-flight test data; and (4) to evaluate the capability of the 80- by 120-Foot Wind Tunnel test section as a hover facility. The secondary objectives were (1) to evaluate rotor inflow and wake effects (variations in tunnel speed, shaft angle, and thrust condition) on wind tunnel test section wall and floor pressures; (2) to establish the criteria for the definition of flow breakdown (condition where wall corrections are no longer valid) for this size rotor and wind tunnel cross-sectional area; and (3) to evaluate the wide-field shadowgraph technique for visualizing full-scale rotor wakes. This data base of rotor performance and loads can be used for analytical and experimental comparison studies for full-scale, four-bladed, fully articulated rotor systems. Rotor performance and structural loads data are presented in this report.
Book Synopsis Design Selection Tests for TRAC Retraction Mechanism by : Harold K. Frint
Download or read book Design Selection Tests for TRAC Retraction Mechanism written by Harold K. Frint and published by . This book was released on 1977 with total page 101 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An investigation was conducted to select appropriate materials for and to demonstrate the satisfactory operation of a fullscale jackscrew and nut assembly for a TRAC variable-diameter helicopter rotor blade. The investigation successfully demonstrated the operation of a suitable material combination in the jackscrew/nut configuration, with more than 300 full retraction-extension cycles under full design load and rotational speed conditions. The operation of the system improved significantly as the test progressed, with the coefficient of friction, the temperature rise, and the wear rate all decreasing with time. This result confirms that successful full-scale development of the TRAC rotor concept is achievable. It was concluded that a wear life on the order of 1000 retraction-extension cycles can be achieved in a production design. A materials evaluation phase of the investigation utilized rings of selected material combinations to simulate a single thread contact. The preferred material/lubricant combination that emerged from these tests was a high-strength maraging-steel screw, coated with vitrolube dry-film lubricant, and a carbon-graphite nut. (Author).

Book Synopsis Rotors: Stress Analysis and Design by : Vincenzo Vullo
Download or read book Rotors: Stress Analysis and Design written by Vincenzo Vullo and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-09 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stress and strain analysis of rotors subjected to surface and body loads, as well as to thermal loads deriving from temperature variation along the radius, constitutes a classic subject of machine design. Nevertheless attention is limited to rotor profiles for which governing equations are solvable in closed form. Furthermore very few actual engineering issues may relate to structures for which stress and strain analysis in the linear elastic field and, even more, under non-linear conditions (i.e. plastic or viscoelastic conditions) produces equations to be solved in closed form. Moreover, when a product is still in its design stage, an analytical formulation with closed-form solution is of course simpler and more versatile than numerical methods, and it allows to quickly define a general configuration, which may then be fine-tuned using such numerical methods. In this view, all subjects are based on analytical-methodological approach, and some new solutions in closed form are presented. The analytical formulation of problems is always carried out considering actual engineering applications. Moreover, in order to make the use of analytical models even more friendly at the product design stage, a function is introduced whereby it is possible to define a fourfold infinity of disk profiles, solid or annular, concave or convex, converging or diverging. Such subjects, even derived from scientific authors’ contributions, are always aimed at designing rotors at the concept stage, i.e. in what precedes detailed design. Among the many contributions, a special mention is due for the following: linear elastic analysis of conical disks and disks with variable profile along its radius according to a power of a linear function, also subjected to thermal load and with variable density; analysis of a variable-profile disk subjected to centrifugal load beyond the material's yield point, introducing the completely general law expressed by a an n-grade polynomial; linear elastic analysis of hyperbolic disk, subjected to thermal load along its radius; linear elastic analysis of a variable-thickness disk according to a power of a linear function, subjected to angular acceleration; etc.

This book was released on 2018-07-23 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The attributes of a variable diameter rotor concept applied to civil tiltrotor aircraft are investigated using the V/STOL aircraft sizing and performance computer program (VASCOMP). To begin, civil tiltrotor viability issues that motivate advanced rotor designs are discussed. Current work on the variable diameter rotor and a theoretical basis for the advantages of the rotor system are presented. The size and performance of variable diameter and conventional tiltrotor designs for the same baseline mission are then calculated using a modified NASA Ames version of VASCOMP. The aircraft are compared based on gross weight, fuel required, engine size, and autorotative performance for various hover disk loading values. Conclusions about the viability of the resulting designs are presented and a program for further variable diameter rotor research is recommended. Book Synopsis Configuration Design Analysis of a Prop/Rotor Aircraft by :
Download or read book Configuration Design Analysis of a Prop/Rotor Aircraft written by and published by . This book was released on 1970 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Basic design studies on prop/rotor aircraft are summarized. This program is to determine design criteria and demonstrate the adequacy of technology by designing a full-scale prop/rotor aircraft and by designing, manufacturing and testing scaled models. Selected from preliminary design and performance sensitivity tradeoffs was a prop/rotor aircraft for a transport mission with a 250 N. mile radius, a cruise speed of 350 knots and a payload of 5 tons with a VTO at 2500 ft and 93F. This aircraft can also perform a rescue mission with a 500 N. mile raidus and a midpoint hover time of 30 minutes. The landing gear was sized for a coverage of 40 and 38 passes when operated on CBR4 soil. A 21% wing thickness is used to provide a wing compatible with high speed drag rise and to satisfy the structural requirements with a minimum weight wing. The prop/rotor utilized has no flap or lag hinges. Rotor blade cyclic pitch is planned to provide both control moments and load alleviation. A hover figure of merit of 75% and a cruise efficiency of 78% are expected for this aircraft. A useful load fraction of 31.6% is projected, based on conservative estimates.
