Download or read book New Neutron Capture and Total Cross Section Measurements On[sup 88]r and Their Impact on S-process Nucleosynthesis written by and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The authors have made new and improved measurements of the neutron capture and total cross sections of[sup 88]Sr at the Oak Ridge Electron Linear Accelerator (ORELA). Improvements over previous measurements include a wider incident neutron energy range, the use of metallic rather than carbonate samples, better background subtraction, reduced sensitivity to sample-dependent backgrounds, and better pulse-height weighting functions. Because of its small cross section, the[sup 88]Sr(n, [gamma]) reaction is an important bottleneck during the s-process nucleosynthesis. Hence, an accurate determination of this rate is needed to better constrain the neutron exposure in s-process models and to more fully exploit the recently discovered isotopic anomalies in certain meteorites. They describe the experimental procedures, compare the results to previous data, and discuss their astrophysical impact.

Book Synopsis Statistical Vs Valence Neutron Neutron Capture in 98Mo by :
Download or read book Statistical Vs Valence Neutron Neutron Capture in 98Mo written by and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It has often been reported that, in mass regions corresponding to peaks in the neutron strength function, nonstatistical mechanisms contribute a significant or even major portion of the average radiation width in the beginning of the resonance region. This could severely limit the possibility of calculating caputure cross sections for targets where experimental data are lacking, because such direct effects are sensitive to the detailed nuclear level structure in the daughter nucleus. The reaction 98Mo+n was examined for neutrons in the 1 keV to 3 MeV energy range, because this case is often cited as one of the clearest examples of valence neutron capture effects. Preliminary calculations are presented which suggest that these nonstatistical effects rapidly disappear when measurements from even a small number of resonances are averaged.

Download or read book Parametric Study of Dynamic S-process Neutron-capture Nucleosynthesis written by and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We summarize the stellar parameters which characterize the s-process sigma N curve in the framework of models which produce an exponential distribution of exposures by periodic time-dependent neutron irradiations. The optimum parameter space, defined by the best fit to the solar-system sigma N curve, is distinctively different than the classical smooth monotonically decreasing curve. Constraints are placed on the s-process environment. The needs for better neutron-capture data in various mass regions are highlighted. 19 references.
Book Synopsis Non-statistical Effects in Neutron Capture. [Lectures, Reaction Mechanisms, Resonance and Thermal Regions, J, . Pi., M1 Transitions, Signature]. by :

This book was released on 1978 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lectures are presented describing present understanding of departures from the extreme statistical model in radiative s- and p-wave neutron capture in the resonance as well as the thermal regions in terms of simple reaction mechanisms. Supporting evidence from inverse threshold photonuclear reactions is also presented. While an exhaustive study is not made, the most interesting examples are treated. Also spin and parity determinations and recent developments in the understanding of M1 transitions are considered. It is concluded that nonstatistical effects in both s- and p-wave radiative neutron capture do exist in the thermal and resonance region. The gamma ray energy dependence of the partial decay widths provide a signature of the type of reaction mechanism. 94 references. (JFP).

Book excerpt: Astrophysical r-process calculations of transbismuth elements are of interest because certain actinide pairs can be treated as chronometers in determining the duration of nucleosynthesis. For one such calculation where a particularly long galactic age was derived, 21 + 2 - 4 Gyr, we present evidence that the effect of beta-delayed fission appears to be seriously overestimated in uranium decay chains with A = 252 to 257. With this conclusion, it follows that this estimate of the galactic age must be considered more uncertain than if the calculated rates of beta-delayed fission were found to be acceptable. The nuclear level structure of 238Np has been investigated using the 237Np(n, .gamma.)238Np reaction and the alpha decay of 242mAm as experimental probes. Having established a level scheme for 238Np that includes 47 excited levels and 93 secondary transitions, we find a high degree of correspondence between the experimental band structure and that of a semi-empirical model developed to predict excitations in odd-odd deformed nuclei. 35 refs., 4 figs., 3 tabs.
