Book excerpt: Laboratory fatigue testing was performed on six Superpave HMA mixtures in use at the Virginia Smart Road. Evaluation of the applied strain and resulting fatigue life was performed to fit regressions to predict the fatigue performance of each mixture. Differences in fatigue performance due to field and laboratory production and compaction methods were investigated. Also, in-situ mixtures were compared to mixtures produced accurately from the job mix formula to determine if changes occurring between the laboratory and batch plant significantly affected fatigue life. Results from the fatigue evaluation allowed verification of several hypotheses related to mixture production and compaction and fatigue performance. It was determined that location within the pavement surface, such as inner or outer wheelpath or center-of-lane, did not significantly affect laboratory fatigue test results, although the location will have significant effects on in-situ fatigue life. Also the orientation of samples cut from an in-situ pavement (parallel or perpendicular to the direction of traffic) had only a minor effect on the laboratory fatigue life, because the variability inherent in the pavement due to material variability is greater than the variability induced by compaction. Fatigue life of laboratory-compacted samples was found to be greater than fatigue life of field-compacted samples; additionally, the variability of the laboratory compacted mixture was found to be less than that of the field-compacted samples. However, it was also found that batch-plant production significantly reduces specimen variability as compared to small-batch laboratory production when the same laboratory compaction is used on both specimen sets. Finally, for Smart Road mixtures produced according to the job mix formula, the use of polymer-modified binder or stone matrix asphalt was shown to increase the expected fatigue life. However, results for all mixes indicated that fatigue resistance rankings might change depending on the applied strain level. This study contributes to the understanding of the factors involved in fatigue performance of asphalt mixtures. Considering that approximately 95% of Virginia's interstate and primary roadways incorporate asphalt surface mixtures, and that fatigue is a leading cause of deterioration, gains in the understanding of fatigue processes and prevention have great potential payoff by improving both the mixture and pavement design practices.

Conversely the use of RAP in load carrying layers has always been a sensitive issue due to the uniformity and rheological properties of the blended asphalt mixtures. Typically the inclusion of RAP will blend the long-term aged asphalt binder in the RAP with the fresh asphalt binder resulting in a stiffer mixture. Generally rutting will less likely be a problem with the inclusion of RAP. However, the fatigue crack resistance of the HMA mixtures containing RAP has been a key interest to designers and engineers. This thesis presents the results of a laboratory study, in which the laboratory fatigue characteristics of asphalt mixtures containing RAP were evaluated. A typical surface mixture meeting the state of Tennessee "D" mix criteria was evaluated at 0, 10, 20 and 30 percent of screened RAP materials. Two types of aggregates (limestone and gravel) and two types of binder (PG 64-22 and PG 76-22) were used for this study. Fatigue characteristics were evaluated through indirect tensile strength, semi-circular bending and beam fatigue tests. The results from this study indicated that laboratory long-term aging and the inclusion of RAP generally increased the stiffness and laboratory fatigue resistance for the mixtures studied. For the mixtures studied, the inclusion of 30 percent RAP for both binder types significantly changed the fatigue characteristics as compared to 0, 10 and 20 percent RAP. Increasing the percentage of RAP increased the fatigue resistance, however at higher percentages of RAP the mixture becomes stiffer and some fatigue characteristics are compromised by adding RAP.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Laboratory creep and fatigue testing was performed on five Superpave surface hot-mix asphalt mixtures placed at the Virginia Smart Road. Differences in creep and fatigue response attributable to production and compaction methods were investigated. In addition, changes in creep response resulting from differences in specimen size were evaluated. Further, an evaluation of the effects of loading frequency, presence of rest periods, and specimen location within the pavement on fatigue life was conducted. Creep compliance values were determined using viscoelastic-based calculations, and time-temperature superposition was used to generate mastercurves. Reported creep compliance response models from the literature were found inadequate for accurately describing the creep compliance mastercurves generated during this study. Differences in creep response between specimens of different sizes were found to be due to specimen and test variability, rather than size. An evaluation of the effects of laboratory and plant production and laboratory and field compaction was inconclusive as material variability appeared greater than production or compaction variability. Simple regression models were found to be satisfactory for use in the development of prediction models for fatigue, although test data are necessary for calibration to particular mixture types. No relationships were found between fatigue model coefficients and volumetric properties of the mixtures tested because of the limited range of volumetric properties. Variability in volumetric properties between the mixtures produced at the plant and those produced to match the job mix formula did not significantly influence the predicted laboratory fatigue performance. Laboratory fatigue lives were similar between the laboratory-compacted fatigue specimens and specimens cut from the pavement; differences observed in performance were attributable to different air void contents. Predicted fatigue life was found to be statistically independent of the frequency of the applied loads or presence of rest periods for the mixtures, frequencies, and rest periods considered in this study. Minimal differences were observed between fatigue life predictions for plant-produced, field-compacted specimens cut from different locations in the pavement. This study contributes to the understanding of the factors involved in creep and fatigue performance of asphalt mixtures. The mixture responses characterized by this study are related to the rutting and fatigue performance of asphalt pavements. The choice of appropriate asphalt materials to resist rutting and fatigue deterioration will result in reduced maintenance needs and longer service lives for pavements.

Book excerpt: The recent changes in the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) hot mix asphalt (HMA) mix design procedures to ensure that the mixture types routinely used on Texas highways are not prone to rutting raised concerns that these mixture types are now more susceptible to fatigue cracking. The primary goal of this study was to evaluate fatigue cracking test methods and recommend that which is both simple and robust, especially in qualifying commonly used Texas mixture types. One way to minimize fatigue cracking is through material screening and selection of appropriate mix designs that are representative of fatigue-resistant HMA mixes. However, there are not many standardized laboratory fracture resistance tests that have been universally adopted for routine mix design and/or screening purposes for HMA fatigue resistance. In this study, four different fracture test methods: the Overlay Tester (OT), Direct Tension (DT), Indirect Tension (IDT), and Semicircular Bending (SCB) tests were comparatively evaluated for their potential application as surrogate tests for routine fracture resistance evaluation and screening of HMA mixes in the laboratory. The evaluation criteria included: rationality of the test concept and correlation to field performance, repeatability and variability, simplicity and practicality of the sample fabrication process, and simplicity of data analysis. Results and key findings based on the laboratory fatigue resistance characterization of various commonly used Texas coarse- and fine-graded HMA mixes (Type B, C, and D) are presented in this paper. Overall, preliminary findings indicated that no monotonically-loaded test would be appropriate as a surrogate fatigue resistance test; however, the SCB test showed potential as a repeated-loading test. Suggested SCB test improvements include developing the repeated SCB test protocol, determining the appropriate failure criterion, and correlating laboratory performance to field performance.

Experience has shown that recycling of asphalt pavements is highly beneficial from a technical, economical, and environmental perspective. Some of the main advantages of utilizing the RAP include conservation of asphalt and aggregate resources, conservation of energy, and reduction of construction costs. This report is mainly focused on field study of fatigue and rheological properties of asphalt mixtures with inclusion of different (0,10,20,30) percent of RAP. The objective of this study is to determine what maximum percent of RAP can be introduced into the Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) mixture without affecting mixture properties. Surface mixtures meeting the TDOT "D" mix criteria were evaluated at 0, 10, 20, and 30 percent of screened RAP materials. During the field study two mixes were evaluated (limestone and gravel) with two different types of binder (PG 64-22 and PG 76-22). Fatigue characteristics as well as the mixture properties were tested and evaluated. Tests used for fatigue evaluation of HMA mixture included indirect tensile strength, semi-circular bending, and beam fatigue tests. From this study it was concluded that the inclusion of RAP discarded material, as well as long-term aging, will generally influence the stiffness of the mixture and in return affect its resistance to fatigue cracking. It was also noted that the fatigue properties of the mixtures with 30 percent of RAP material drastically changed the fatigue characteristics as compared to 0, 10, and 20 percent of RAP mixtures. At the higher percentages of RAP the mixture becomes stiffer and fatigue characteristics of the RAP mixture are compromised by adding RAP. Based on the results of the field mixtures, up to 20 percent RAP can be used in TDOT surface mixtures without compromising the fatigue properties of the asphalt mixture.

Book excerpt: This study investigated the effect of added asphalt binder content on the performance and volumetric properties of asphalt concrete mixtures containing reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) in the amounts of 0%, 20%, and 40%. A laboratory-produced mixture containing 100% RAP was also evaluated. Performance of the mixtures was evaluated based on three criteria: stiffness (dynamic modulus), fatigue resistance, and rutting resistance (flow number and asphalt pavement analyzer). Results showed that a 0.5% increase in binder content improved both the fatigue and rutting resistance of the 0% and 20% RAP mixtures with only slight (insignificant) decreases in dynamic modulus. However, the addition of various amounts of binder to the 40% RAP mixture led to a significant decrease in rutting resistance with little or no improvement to fatigue resistance. Volumetric analysis was performed on all of the mixtures, and detailed results are presented. Based on the results of the study, the authors recommend that the Virginia Department of Transportation supplement current asphalt mixture design procedures that are based on mixture volumetric properties with laboratory-mixture performance testing.

Book excerpt: An evaluation of aged hot-mix asphalt (HMA) pavements was accomplished to develop a method for improving the prediction of remaining fatigue life of aged HMA surfaces. This is important for both planning Department of Defense airfield maintenance funds and for predicting the performance of operating surfaces in the theater of operation. This study involved the evaluation of HMA at several military airfields. After field inspections and field testing, slab samples were carried to the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center for laboratory testing. Laboratory testing included the determination of mixture and binder properties, indirect tensile strength tests on cored specimens, and beam fatigue tests. The results from this study were used to develop improved fatigue performance predictions for field-aged HMA pavements.
