Book excerpt: The cohesive zone model was employed to study the fracture resistance of asphalt mixtures at low temperature. The bilinear traction-separation curve that directly reflects the magnitudes of the tensile strength, fracture energy, and failure separation of asphalt mixtures was proposed to evaluate the fracture resistance of asphalt mixtures. The fracture resistance of the asphalt mixtures with the nominal maximum aggregate size of 13 mm using different asphalt types and asphalt contents and at different temperatures was evaluated using the proposed method. The results of the study indicate that the proposed method can be used to comprehensively evaluate the fracture resistance of asphalt mixtures.

This book was released on 1993 with total page 610 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thermal distress in asphalt concrete pavements is a widespread problem around the world. Thermal cracking can be divided into two modes of distress: low temperature cracking and thermal fatigue cracking. Low temperature cracking results from extremely cold temperatures; thermal fatigue cracking results from daily temperature cycles. Low temperature cracking is attributed to tensile stresses induced in the asphalt concrete pavement as the temperature drops to an extremely low temperature. If the pavement is cooled, tensile stresses develop as a result of the pavement's tendency to contract. The friction between the pavement and the base layer resists the contraction. If the tensile stress equals the strength of the mixture at that temperature, a micro-crack develops at the surface of the pavement. Under repeated temperature cycles, the crack penetrates the full depth and across the asphalt concrete layer. The thermal stress restrained specimen test (TSRST) was identified as an accelerated laboratory test to evaluate the thermal cracking resistance of asphalt concrete mixtures. The TSRST system developed at OSU includes a load system, data control/acquisition system and software, temperature control system, and specimen alignment stand. The overall system is controlled by a personal computer. A TSRST is conducted by cooling an asphalt concrete specimen at a specified rate while monitoring the specimen at constant length. A typical thermally-induced stress curve is divided into two parts: relaxation and non-relaxation. The temperature at which the curve is divided into two parts is termed the transition temperature. The temperature at fracture is termed the fracture temperature and the maximum stress is the fracture strength. An extensive number of TSRSTs over a wide range of conditions were performed to investigate the thermal cracking resistance of asphalt concrete mixtures. The TSRST results provided a very strong indication of low temperature cracking resistance for all mixtures considered. A ranking of mixtures for low temperature cracking resistance based on the TSRST fracture temperature was in excellent agreement with a ranking based on the physical properties of the asphalt cements. It is highly recommended that the TSRST be used in mix evaluation to identify low temperature cracking resistance of asphalt concrete mixtures. The TSRST showed very promising results regarding the effect of all variables which are currently considered to affect the low temperature cracking of mixtures. The variables considered to have significant affect on the low temperature cracking resistance of mixtures in this study include asphalt type, aggregate type, degree of aging, cooling rate, and stress relaxation.

Book excerpt: This paper investigates the effect of loading level and loading rate on the damage development and strength of asphalt mixtures. Indirect tensile creep tests with different loading levels and strength tests with three loading rates were performed at three low temperatures for ten mixtures. An acoustic emission (AE) system with eight recording channels was used to monitor the development of micro cracking in the specimens for both tests for one mixture. The experimental results show that test temperature has a significant effect on the behavior of the material. Data analysis from the creep test indicates that the creep loading level significantly affects the response of the tested material. The AE rate analysis shows that no actual damage develops when a creep load is less than 20 % of the strength and significant micro damage accumulates when the applied creep load is more than 30 % of the strength value. The loading rate was found to have a significant effect on the measured tensile strength even at a relatively low temperature, and the measured tensile strength increases with the increase of the loading rate for all the test temperatures considered in this study. However, this effect was found to be diluted with the decrease of the test temperature. The AE analysis indicates that a damage zone develops in both the creep and strength tests. The damage zone decreases with temperature decrease and increases with the increase of the loading level applied during the creep test. The damage zone obtained from the strength test was approximately equal to that from the creep testing with a loading level about 25-50 % of the strength value.

Book excerpt: The objective of this study was to assess the low temperature anti-cracking performance of crumb rubber modified asphalt mixtures by performing the semi-circular bending tests. The flexural tensile strength, fracture energy density, and fracture resistance were used to evaluate the rubber modified asphalt mixture's performance based on fracture mechanics J-integral concept. The semi-circular bending (SCB) tests were conducted to study the effect of crumb rubber dosage, crumb rubber size, and testing temperature on the low temperature anti-cracking performance of rubber modified asphalt mixtures. Two gradations (a dense gradation mixture and a gap-gradation mixture) were selected, and five rubber application dosages (15, 18, 20, 22, and 25 %, all by the weight of base binder) were studied in the paper. The tests were performed at temperatures of 0, -10, and -20°C. The testing results indicated that the flexural tensile strength and fracture energy density increased initially, reached to a peak point and then decreased with the increase of rubber dosage. Flexural tensile strength and fracture energy density reached its maximum value at the 20 % rubber dosage among the five rubber application dosages. The flexural tensile strength, fracture energy density, and the J-integral fracture toughness of the gap-graded rubber asphalt mixture specimens were higher than those of the dense gradation. The smaller sized particle rubber modified mixture provided a better low temperature anti-cracking performance as compared to those with bigger particle sizes. Through the comprehensive consideration of laboratory test results and field results, it was recommended that the J-integral fracture toughness should be no less than 2.8 KJ/m2 for new asphalt rubber pavement in Shannxi province.

Book excerpt: This report examines the feasibility of using the thermal stress restrained specimen test to evaluate low temperature cracking in asphalt pavement mixes. Data were collected from laboratory and field evaluations. Various mixing, aging, and compaction methods were used to prepare test samples with materials obtained from two Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) highway projects. Field data were obtained from two recently built test sections and compared with laboratory test results. Pavement condition surveys quantified low temperature cracking of both test sections after one winter. Temperature data for the project sites also were collected. Pavement condition and temperature data were compared to results from the thermal stress restrained specimen test. The thermal stress restrained specimen test was effective in testing asphalt pavement mixes. However, test results indicated that lab prepared samples did not closely simulate field samples. Also, comparisons of lab results with field conditions were performed. However, it is recommended that a more comprehensive analysis be performed after test sections have been in service for a few years.

Book excerpt: The current means of evaluating the low temperature cracking resistance of HMA relies on extensive test methods that require assumptions about material behaviors and the use of complicated loading equipment. The purpose of this study was to develop and validate a simple test method to directly measure the cracking resistance of hot mix asphalt under field-like conditions. A ring shape asphalt concrete cracking device (ACCD) was developed. ACCD utilizes the low thermal expansion coefficient of Invar steel to induce tensile stresses in a HMA sample as temperature is lowered. The results of the tests of the notched ring shaped specimens compacted around an ACCD Invar ring showed good repeatability with less than 1.0°C (1.8°F) standard deviation in cracking temperature. A laboratory validation indicated that ACCD results of five mixes correlate well with thermal stress restrained specimen test (TSRST) results with the coefficient of determination , r2 = 0.86. To prepare a sample and complete TSRST measurement, it takes minimum 2-3 days. For ACCD, two samples can be easily prepared and tested in a single day with a small test set-up. The capacity of ACCD can be increased easily with minimal cost to accommodate a larger number of samples. Among factors affecting the low temperature performance of HMA, the coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) of aggregate has been overlooked for years. A composite model of HMA is proposed to describe the low temperature cracking phenomenon. Due to the orthotropic and composite nature of asphalt pavement contraction during cooling, the effects of aggregate CTE is amplified up to 18 times for a typical HMA. Of 14 Ohio aggregates studied, the maximum and the minimum CTEs are 11.4 and 4.0 x 10-6/°C, respectively. During cooling, the contraction of Ohio aggregate with high CTE can double the thermal strain of asphalt binders in the asphalt mix and may cause asphalt pavement thermal cracking at warmer temperature.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this study, the viability of using three test methods for asphalt mixtures and one test method for asphalt binders are investigated. These test methods are: Bending Beam Rheometer (BBR) for creep and strength of asphalt mixtures; low temperature Semi Circular Bend (SCB) test for fracture energy of asphalt mixtures; Dynamic Modulus (E*) test of asphalt mixtures using the Indirect Tensile Test (IDT) configuration; and BBR strength test of asphalt binders. The materials used in the experimental work were used in MnROAD cells constructed in the summer of 2016 as part of the MnROAD Cracking Group (CG) experiment, a 3-year pooled-fund project. The results show that the testing methods investigated provide repeatable results that follow trends similar to the one observed using traditional methods. The results also show that the properties are highly temperature dependent and the ranking observed at one temperature can change at a different temperature. In addition, it is observed that materials with similar rheological properties, such as complex modulus absolute value E*, creep stiffness S, and m-value, do not necessarily have the same fracture resistance. These results confirm one more time the need for a fracture/strength test for correctly evaluating cracking resistance of asphalt materials.
