Book excerpt: During the past several years, a number of investigations have focused on improved fiber surface treatments as well as the development of micromechanical experimental techniques to accurately evaluate the fiber/matrix adhesion level. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of a custom fiber surface treatment on the fiber/matrix adhesion level of a carbon fiber reinforced, polymer matrix composite material. Single fiber fragmentation tests were performed on specimens produced using EPON 828 resin and AU-4 fibers, AS-4 fibers, and AU-4 fibers that were treated with a custom fiber surface treatment known to lead to direct chemical reaction with the EPON 828 resin. Qualitative inspection of the birefringent stress patterns produced by the custom treated fiber indicate a high level of fiber/matrix adhesion, greater than the adhesion exhibited by either of the two as received fiber types. In addition, the custom treated fibers produced an average fiber fragment length approximately 23% shorter than the AS-4 specimens, indicating a rather significant increase in adhesion level for the custom treated fibers over the commercially treated fibers. Calculated interfacial shear strength values follow the same trend as was seen during the evaluation of the average fragment length values.

Book excerpt: Fiber Fragmentation test or Single Fiber Composite test (SFC) has been widely used to characterize the interfacial behavior in composites. Though it is accepted that SFC gives useful information about the interfacial bond quality and the fiber strength, there is no clear consensus on how to interpret the data and quantify the interfacial properties. In this paper, the fiber fragmentation test is modeled with the objective of studying the effect of interfacial bond strength and post-debonding frictional effects on the progress of the fragmentation process. The load transfer at the fiber-matrix interface is modeled using the shear-lag principles and the statistical variation of fiber strength is incorporated using Weibull theory. A parametric study of the variation of interfacial shear properties on the mean fragment length and debond progression with applied strain is conducted. It is found that in the case of weak interfaces saturation of fiber fragments occurs at much lower applied strain values and is usually associated with extensive debonding. The numerical simulation shows that the fragmentation results are very much sensitive to the frictional effects as it controls the debonded length. The results from the model are correlated with experimental data to validate the model and for extracting the interfacial properties from the test data.

Book excerpt: The effect of absorbed moisture on the interfacial strength of a carbon fiber/epoxy matrix composite has been studied using the single fiber fragmentation test. The absorption of 1.40% moisture produced a reduction less than 20% in the interfacial shear strength. This reduction in interfacial strength may be associated with a reduction in the residual compressive stresses at the fiber/matrix interface associated with the cooldown from the curing temperature, a weakening of the chemical adhesion, or a softening of the matrix giving failure by interphase yielding. These results suggest that long-term durability of carbon fiber/epoxy matrix composites in seawater may not be much affected by absorbed seawater.

Book excerpt: Three series of torsional dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) tests were conducted on unidirectional carbon/epoxy composites to determine differences in interfacial bond strength. For the first series, composites were manufactured with PAN-based and pitch-based carbon fibers. The fibers had a proprietary surface treatment. For the second series of tests, the composites were made with four grades of pitch-based carbon fibers. Two different methods of surface treatment were used on the fibers. As a comparison, short beam shear tests were conducted on the composites made with fibers which had different surface treatments. The final series of tests were conducted on composite samples made from one grade of pitch-based fibers with four different fiber volume fractions. All samples were made using the same matrix material. Dynamic mechanical analysis was able to clearly differentiate between the fiber/matrix bond strength of pitch-based and PAN-based fibers. The interlaminar shear strength correlated well with the DMA results, indicating that DMA can measure the effectiveness of various surface treatments. The dynamic mechanical loss modulus increased with increasing fiber volume fraction or total surface area.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fibers incorporated into polymer matrices suffer from poor adhesion at the fiber-resin interface. In ballistic materials such as body armor, it is imperative that the fiber-resin interface is strengthened for superior energy absorbing capabilities. To address this need, fibers are typically subjected to surface modifications. The overall aim of this work is to establish a methodology of controlling the interfacial adhesion by controlling the degree of chemical bonding between the fiber and the resin. In this study, plasma surface treatments were applied to ultra high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMW-PE) fibers to introduce chemical functionalities to promote covalent bonding. Nitrogen and oxygen plasmas were used and changes imposed by the plasma were characterized using surface analytical techniques. The adhesional strength and energy absorption of the plasma-modified fibers/epoxy interface were assessed using a single-fiber microdroplet shear test. FTIR and XPS reveal the existence of four main chemical groups - hydroxyl, carboxylic, carbonyl and amine groups. Characterization of the interface showed that a six-fold increase of the interfacial shear strength (IFSS) can be attained from plasma treating the fibers.

Book excerpt: To date, the effect of thermo-oxidative aging on unidirectional composite mechanical properties has been monitored by the measurement of interlaminar shear strength (ILSS) and either three or four point longitudinal flexural strength (LFS) of the composites being tested. Both results are affected by the fiber-to-matrix bonding, the former being dependent on the shear resistance of the interface and the latter on the degree of load sharing by the fibers through the fiber/matrix interface. Recently, fiber/matrix interfacial bond strengths have been monitored using a transverse flexural strength (TFS) test method. This test method was used to evaluate the effect of fiber surface treatment on the fiber/matrix bond. The interface bonding was varied in these tests using Hercules A-fibers with three-types of surfaces that produce bonds of poor, better, and good quality. The TFS was found not only to be sensitive to the bonding, but also to the aging time of unidirectional A-fiber/PMR-15 composites. This relationship reflects the mechanism by which the PMR-15 degrades during thermal aging. Bowles, Kenneth J. Glenn Research Center NASA-TM-105848, E-7293, NAS 1.15:105848 RTOP 510-01-50...

Book excerpt: An interlaboratory study (ILS) was conducted to determine the utility and precision of a test method for measuring fiber/matrix adhesion of carbon fiber-reinforced polymer matrix composites. The test method is based on voltage contrast X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (VCXPS). The technique provides a quantitative measure of the relative amount of exposed fiber and exposed matrix at the fracture surface of a failed composite specimen. Eleven laboratories participated in two rounds of interlaboratory testing. The first round or pilot run was conducted to familiarize laboratories with the technique. Each laboratory collected data on one of eight material variants to compare with data from the host laboratory. In the second round each laboratory analyzed different coupons from the same composite laminate. Repeatability and reproducibility statistics were calculated and demonstrated that the method has interlaboratory utility. Precision statistics were influenced by the heterogeneity of samples generated from a single-carbon fiber-reinforced polymer matrix composite laminate.
