Book excerpt: This Enlargement Paper brings together into a single document the Directorate General for Economic and Financial Affairs evaluations of the third Pre-Accession Economic Programmes (PEPs) of the acceding and candidate countries. One of the economic priorities of the 1999 and 2000 Accession Partnerships was the establishment of an annual fiscal surveillance for the candidate countries. This gave birth to the so-called Pre-Accession Fiscal Surveillance Procedure, which aims at preparing countries for the participation in the multilateral surveillance and economic policy co-ordination procedures currently in place in the EU as part of the Economic and Monetary Union. The Pre-Accession Economic Programmes (PEPs) are part of this procedure.

This book was released on 2005-04-18 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eight central and eastern European countries--the Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Slovak Republic, and Slovenia--officially joined the European Union (EU) in May 2004. Seeking to consider the opportunities and challenges of euro adoption, the papers in this volume--by a noted group of country officials, academics, representatives of international institutions, and market participants-offer insight on the various dimensions of euro adoption in these eight new EU members--how they should prepare, whether an early move is optimal, and what pitfalls may occur along the way.
Book Synopsis Labor Markets and Social Policy in Central and Eastern Europe by : N. A. Barr
Download or read book Labor Markets and Social Policy in Central and Eastern Europe written by N. A. Barr and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2005-01-01 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Labor Markets and Social Policy in Central and Eastern Europe' summarises social policy reform during the transition and EU accession and analyses the social policy challenges which continue to face both old and new member states. Specifically, the book amplifies two sets of arguments. First, social policy under communism was in important respects well-suited to the old order andprecisely for that reasonwas systematically badly-suited to a market economy. Strategic reform directions thus followed from the nature of the transition process and from constraints imposed by EU accession. Secondly, successful accession is not the end of the story: economic and social trends over the past 50 years are creating strains for social policy which all countriesold and new memberswill have to face. This book will be of interest to readers interested in social policy, particularly those with an interest in the process of post-communist transition, in EU accession, and in future social policy challenges for the wider Europe. It should be of interest to academics in departments of economics, social policy and political science, and to policy makers, including government advisers and civil servants.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The enlargement process, the creation of the Monetary Union and the need to promote further the political and economic integration of Europe have ignited an intense debate at the European level among researchers and policy-makers. Examining the effects that political, legal, and regulatory institutions have on economic development, this book provides new contributions on the political economy of the European constitution. It covers many issues including social protection, fiscal reform and regional policies that are on the table of European policy makers. Furthermore, it provides ideas and analysis of such issues as the problem of voting reform, the centralization and decentralization of the policy process and the allocation of new policy prerogatives at the EU level which are crucial for the design of a new European constitution.

Book excerpt: In this Enlargement Paper the Directorate General for Economic and Financial Affairs brings together into a single document the economic chapters of the Regular Reports of 2004 on progress made towards meeting the accession criteria of each candidate country, as well as a horizontal overview. The European Commission adopted these Reports on 6 October 2004. The introduction explains the methodology underlying these Reports that the Commission has been following since the publication of the 1997 Opinion, in order to carry out these assessments. As such, it represents only a part of the overall progress made by the acceding and remaining candidate countries towards meeting the accession criteria.A proper full assessment of progress made by candidate countries towards accession will require the reader to have a comprehensive reading of progress made under all examined aspects. These can be found in the Regular Reports 2003.
