This book was released on 2003 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The primary objective of the project was to determine the effectiveness of cathodic protection, electrochemical chloride extraction, and corrosion-inhibitor treatment systems installed during the SHRP effort through the long-term evaluation of 32 field test sites and a number of laboratory concrete slab specimens. The FHWA program required monitoring the long-term performance of corrosion inhibitor treatments on selected components of four bridges that were treated and evaluated under SHRP C-103. Three evaluations over a period of 5 years were conducted on structures located in Minnesota, New York and Pennsylvania, and two evaluations were conducted on a structure in Washington State. An analysis of the results concluded that neither of the corrosion inhibitors evaluated in this study, using the specified repairs and exposed to the specific environments, provided any corrosion-inhibiting benefit. Shrinkage cracking plagued repairs at all test sites except for the Washington site.

Book excerpt: This report deals with the selction of a method and the development of detailed procedures to accurately measure the chloride content of reinforced concrete in the field. Specific ion probe, spectrophotometer, digital titrator, and quantab titrator stips were the methods investigated. Results from laboratory procedures and evaluation based on cost, speed accuracy, and levels of required expertise indicated that the specific ion probe was more suitable for use in the field than the other methods selected. Field validation testing was done to substantiate laboratory findings. Guidelines were produced for the instrumentation, digestion solution, and test procedure. The enhanced procedures were evaluated.

Book excerpt: Reinforced concrete bridge substructures in Minnesota and other northern climates possess an elevated risk for chloride induced corrosion damage, which can reduce capacity and shorten service life. Research was performed in 1997 to investigate new strategies for corrosion mitigation, including electrochemical chloride extraction (ECE) and installation of fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) wrap, which were applied on several corrosion-damaged piers on a 30-year-old bridge in Minneapolis. This report presents the results of follow-up research performed to assess the condition of the treated piers after 20 additional years of service, in order to understand the long-term effectiveness of the strategies implemented. The combination of ECE treatment and FRP wrap installation was found to be very effective, with no concrete distress or probable corrosion activity identified in the treated elements. Poor or mixed performance was observed with all other strategies, including both ECE treatment followed by application of a penetrating sealer and FRP wrap installation that was not accompanied with ECE. In addition, significant chloride contamination occurred in all of the subject piers within the 20 years since the initial study, indicating that neither FRP wrap nor concrete sealers prevented the ingress of new chlorides in the manner in which these systems were installed in the initial study. The findings indicated that performing ECE treatment, or installing FRP wraps, did not alone eliminate the risk of future corrosion activity. The most effective corrosion mitigation strategy to extend the service life of reinforced concrete bridge substructures was to minimize water and chloride exposure.

This book was released on 2000 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the 1970s, research projects and field studies have been conducted on different methods for protecting reinforced concrete bridges from corrosion damage. The methods include alternative reinforcement and slab design, barrier methods, electrochemical methods, and corrosion inhibitors. Each method and its underlying principles are described, performance results of laboratory and/or field trials are reviewed, and systems are evaluated based on the results of the trials. Using performance results from the studies and costs obtained from transportation agencies, an economic analysis is used to estimate the cost of each system over a 75-year economic life using discount rates of 2%, 4% and 6%.

This book was released on 1992 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A procedure is presented for the condition assessment of concrete bridge components. It is based on a rational integration of 13 applicable, current test methods or procedures with 7 newly developed methods. The selection of the current methods is detailed in Volume 1 of this report, and the developement of the 7 new procedures is presentted in Volumes 2 through 7. While The primary emphasis is on deterioration associated with chloride-induced corrosion of reinforcing steel, all aspects of durability relative to concrete bridge components are addressed. The procedure is designed to be flexible and amenable to tailoring to suit the needs of the individual highway agency.

Weyers and published by Strategic Highway Research Program (Shrp). This book was released on 1993 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This manual is a practical guide for state highway agency personnel who are faced with the day-to-day task of cost-effectively protecting repairing, and rehabilitating concrete bridges exposed to chloride laden environments. The manual addresses the chloride induced corrosion of reinforcing steel. Methods are presented to estimate the service life and remaining service life of concrete bridge components. Economic models are presented to enable selection of the most cost effective methods. These methods include standard physical, chemical, and experimental protection, repair, and rehabilitation. Also, rapid bridge deck protection, repair, and rehabilitation methods are presented. Two mechanized concrete removal methods, milling and hydrodemolition, are compared to the traditional method, pneumatic breakers. The advantages of combining the strengths of the three removal methods are also presented.

Book Synopsis Evaluation of the Effectiveness of Surface Applied Corrosion Inhibitors for Concrete Bridges by :
Download or read book Evaluation of the Effectiveness of Surface Applied Corrosion Inhibitors for Concrete Bridges written by and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Deicing salts and salt-water spray can cause serious corrosion problems for reinforced concrete bridge structures. These problems can lead to costly and labor intensive repair and even replacement of the structure. Surface applied corrosion inhibitors are potentially a useful and cost effective way to prolong the life of existing structures. The purpose of this research project was to evaluate the effectiveness of commercially available corrosion inhibitors for surface treatments of existing reinforced concrete bridges. Reinforced concrete specimens were cast with different levels of initial chloride contents, coated with one of six products tested, and placed in accelerated corrosion environments. Each manufacturer donated their corresponding products for use in the experiment. The manufacturers were also given the test matrix and parameters in advance of the product application and invited to participate in the application process. Environmental conditions, voltmeter, and half cell potential readings were taken on a weekly basis in accordance with ASTM standards. Intermittently, some of these specimens were removed from their environments and evaluated on a visual, mass loss, strength loss, and chloride content basis. This data was then compiled and compared to each other and to control specimens located in a non-corrosive environment. It was found that surface applied corrosion inhibitors delay the onset of corrosion and the speed of the corrosion process. It was also found that a maximum chloride content of 0.5% by cement weight exists beyond which none of the inhibitor products were useful. Suggestions for further research in this area of study are also included.

Download or read book Rehabilitation of Prestressed Concrete Bridge Components by Non-electrical (conventional) Methods written by and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report describes a technology review, field surveys, and laboratory investigations into the corrosion of prestressed concrete highway bridge elements and conventional repair methods used for these structures. Details of the technology review and field surveys are given in an Interim Report (FHWA-RD-95-041). Subsequent to completion of the field surveys, a laboratory program designed to evaluate corrosion performance of conventional concrete repair materials was initiated. Test specimens were precorroded by application of anodic current while exposed to chloride solutions. In order to study conventional concrete repairs, it was necessary to remove concrete from preselected areas on each purposely corroded test specimen and replace the chloride-contaminated/deteriorated original concrete with repair materials. Materials evaluated included conventional portland cement concrete, latex-modified fiber-reinforced patching mortar, and silica fume concrete containing either organic or inorganic corrosion inhibitors. Specimens where concrete was not removed were used to study the effects of sealers and coating applied on concrete surfaces to mitigate ongoing corrosion. All specimens were exposed for approximately 200 weeks to a 15% solution of sodium chloride after repair. At the conclusion of exposure, patches were removed from repair specimens and the steel and the applied coatings were examined.
