Book excerpt: We examined the cockpit display representation of traffic, to support the pilot in tactical planning and conflict avoidance. Such displays may support the "free flight" concept, but can also support greater situation awareness in a non-free flight environment. Two perspective views and a coplanar display were contrasted in scenarios in which pilots needed to navigate around conflicting traffic, either in the absence (low workload) or presence (high workload) of a second intruder aircraft. All three formats were configured with predictive aiding vectors that explicitly represented the predicted point of closest pass, and predicted penetration of an alert zone around ownship. Ten pilots were assigned to each of the display conditions, and each flew a series of 60 conflict maneuvers that varied in their workload and the complexity of the conflict geometry. Results indicated a tendency to choose vertical over lateral maneuvers, a tendency which was amplified with the coplanar display. Vertical maneuvers by the intruder produced an added source of workload. Importantly, the coplanar display supported performance in all measures that was equal to or greater than either of the perspective displays (i.e., fewer predicted and actual conflicts, less extreme maneuvers). Previous studies that have indicated perspective superiority have only contrasted these with UNIplanar displays rather than the coplanar display used here. Book excerpt: Three experiments are described which each examine different aspects of the formatting and integration of cockpit displays of traffic information to support pilots in traffic avoidance planning. The first two experiments compared two-dimensional (coplanar) with three-dimensional (perspective) versions of a cockpit display of traffic information. In Experiment 1, 30 certified flight instructors flew a series of traffic conflict detection and avoidance maneuvers around an intruder aircraft, sometimes in the presence of a second intruder. The results revealed an advantage for the coplanar display, particularly when there was vertical intruder behavior. In Experiment 2, 17 instructors flew with the coplanar and perspective formats when weather information was either overlaid or displayed separately. Again performance was best with the coplanar display, particularly when the weather data were overlaid. The results of both experiments are also discussed in ten-ns of the traffic maneuver stereotypes exhibited by the pilots. Experiment 3 examined the benefits of the two different predictor elements used in the coplanar displays of Experiments 1 and 2. The study was carried out in a multitask context. These elements were both found to improve safety (reduce actual and predicted conflicts) and to reduce workload, although the different elements affected workload in different ways. Neither predictor element imposed a cost to concurrent task performance. Wickens, Christopher D. and Carbonari, Ron and Merwin, Dave and Morphew, Ephimia and OBrien, Janelle V. Book Synopsis Post-Vietnam Dioxin Exposure in Agent Orange-Contaminated C-123 Aircraft by : Institute of Medicine

This book was released on 2015-05-20 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From 1972 to 1982, approximately 1,500-2,100 US Air Force Reserve personnel trained and worked on C-123 aircraft that had formerly been used to spray herbicides in Vietnam as part of Operation Ranch Hand. After becoming aware that some of the aircraft on which they had worked had previously served this purpose, some of these AF Reservists applied to the US Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) for compensatory coverage under the Agent Orange Act of 1991. The Act provides health care and disability coverage for health conditions that have been deemed presumptively service-related for herbicide exposure during the Vietnam War. The VA denied the applications on the basis that these veterans were ineligible because as non-Vietnam-era veterans or as Vietnam-era veterans without "boots on the ground" service in Vietnam, they were not covered. However, with the knowledge that some air and wipe samples taken between 1979 and 2009 from some of the C-123s used in Operation Ranch Hand showed the presence of agent orange residues, representatives of the C-123 Veterans Association began a concerted effort to reverse VA's position and obtain coverage. At the request of the VA, Post-Vietnam Dioxin Exposure in Agent Orange-Contaminated C-123 Aircraft evaluates whether or not service in these C-123s could have plausibly resulted in exposures detrimental to the health of these Air Force Reservists. The Institute of Medicine assembled an expert committee to address this question qualitatively, but in a scientific and evidence-based fashion. This report evaluates the reliability of the available information for establishing exposure and addresses and places in context whether any documented residues represent potentially harmful exposure by characterizing the amounts available and the degree to which absorption might be expected. Post-Vietnam Dioxin Exposure rejects the idea that the dioxin residues detected on interior surfaces of the C-123s were immobile and effectively inaccessible to the Reservists as a source of exposure. Accordingly, this report states with confidence that the Air Force Reservists were exposed when working in the Operation Ranch Hand C-123s and so experienced some increase in their risk of a variety of adverse responses.

Book Synopsis Free Cockpit Displays of Traffic and Weather Information Effects of Dimension and Data Base Integration by : Janelle V. O'Brien

This book was released on 1997-06-01 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the concept of Free Flight continues to be explored, it becomes increasingly evident that pilots must have displays that effectively depict traffic and weather information as more and more responsibility for separation from such hazards transfers from air traffic controllers to pilots. This research effort seeks to address two display design Issues: dimensionality (3D perspective versus 2D coplanar displays) and database integration (separation or integration through overlays of traffic and weather information within displays) . it was hypothesized that the 2D displays would result in fewer traffic and weather conflicts then the 3D displays, replicating the findings of Merwin and Wickens (1996) regarding traffic avoidance. As suggested by the Proximity Compatibility Principle (Wickens & Carswell, 1995), the data base integrated displays were expected to result in fewer conflicts than the separated displays for trials in which both weather and traffic were critical for maneuver choice. Finally, as revealed in Merwin and Wickens (1996), it was hypothesized that display type and scenario geometry would effect maneuver strategies. 17 general aviation flight instructors flew a series of trials with four display types in which dimensionality, database integration, and hazard geometries were manipulated. Analyses of the data revealed that the 2D displays result in a smaller percentage of conflicts with traffic and weather hazards. The results regarding database integration suggest that displays in which traffic and weather are overlaid result in fewer hazard conflicts for trials in which both hazard types are critical to maneuver selection. Display type and scenario geometry were also found to effect maneuver strategies, including a pronounced 2D advantage for trials in which the traffic is descending or ascending, while performance for level i>IL&H92H(-H1I1>
