This book was released on 2010 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The evaluation of anaerobic digestion process of palm oil mill effluent (POME) was carried out in a laboratory-scale membrane anaerobic system (MAS). The MAS consists of a cross-flow Ultra-filtration membrane for solid-liquid separation and operational pressure of 1.5 to 2 bars. An enrichment mixed culture of methanogenic bacteria was developed and acclimatized in the digester for three days when the POME is fed into the 30 L digester combining Ultrafiltration (UF) membrane MAS is a modern bioreactor and was used for the rapid biotransformation of organic matter to Methane gas with the help of Methanogenic bacteria. Two concentration ratios of 50% and 100% of the raw POME were studied. The hydraulic retention time (HRT) ranged between 1 and 4 days. Throughout the experiment, the removal efficiency of COD was between 78.81% and 81.44%. The methane gas production rate was 0.673 L/g COD/d to 0.974 L/g COD/d. The effluent flow rates for the two ratios were found as 10.31 L/d and 21.75 L/d respectively. The pH was between 6.8 and 7.7. The membrane anaerobic system, MAS treatment efficiency was greatly affected by solid retention time, hydraulic retention time and organic loading rates. In this study, membrane fouling and polarization at the membrane surface played a significant role in the formation of the strongly attached cake layer limiting membrane permeability.

This book was released on 2012 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The direct discharge of Palm Oil Mill Effluent (POME) into river causes serious environmental pollutions due to its high content of organic matter which causes depletion of oxygen in water bodies. The conventional anaerobic POME treatment by using anaerobic ponding system requires longer Hydraulic Retention Time (HRT) and large space. In this study, the efficiency of Membrane Anaerobic System (MAS) in treating POME was investigated. The MAS is a system that consists of an anaerobic digester, a centrifugal pump and Cross-Flow Ultrafiltration (CUF) Membrane with Molecular Weight Cut-off (MWCO) 200 kDa which have been operated at the pressure of 1.5 bars to 2 bars. Three runs of the experiment had been done on three kinds of the POME samples, 50 % diluted raw POME (Run 1), anaerobic digested POME without addition of mixed culture inoculum (Run 2) and anaerobic digested POME with addition of mixed culture inoculum (Run 3). Throughout the study, the MAS system was performing better in treating anaerobic digested POME in term of overall Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) removal efficiency in Run 2 and Run 3 compared to Run 1, which overall COD removal efficiency were 83.94 % (Run 2) and 77.98 % (Run 3). The overall Total Suspended Solid (TSS) removal efficiencies of MAS on POME were varied between 81.02 % and 99.95 % in three runs of the experiments. The overall Volatile Suspended Solid (VSS) removal efficiency of MAS on POME treatment was varied between 74.66 % and 87.87 %. The methane gas production was 80.79 %, 80 % and 78.26 % for Run 1, 2, 3 respectively. The addition of inoculum did not show any significant effect on methane production in Run 3. The methane gas production in MAS through anaerobic digestion of POME was found to be linearly in relationship with the VSS removal efficiency and organic loading.

Download or read book Production of Biogas and Performance Evaluation of Ultrasonic Membrane Anaerobic System (UMAS) for Palm Oil Mill Effluent Treatment (POME) written by Abdurahman Hamid Nour and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study proposes a new approach for integrated technology of ultrasonic and membrane for a palm oil mill effluent treatment. This study evaluated the performance of the new design of ultrasonic membrane anaerobic system (UMAS) when a palm oil mill effluent (POME) introduces this approach. To fit kinetic study, six steady states were investigated and the results have shown that the mixed liquor volatile suspended solids (MLVSSs) range from 10,400 to 17,350 mg/l while the mixed liquor suspended solids (MLSSs) range from 13,800 to 22,600 mg/l. Three kinetic models of Monod, Contois, and Chen and Hashimoto were used to evaluate the integrated system at organic loading rates ranging from 1 to 15 kg COD/m3/day. The percentage efficiency of COD removal was from 92.8 to 98.3%, and hydraulic retention time (HRT) was from 500.8 to 8.6 days. The influent COD concentrations of the POME ranged from 70,400 to 90,200 mg/l.The integrated technology of UMAS is a more attractive one as it avoids membrane fouling problems.

This book was released on 2014 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The direct discharge of the Palm Oil Mill Effluent (POME) wastewater causes serious environmental pollution due to its high chemical oxygen demand (COD), total suspended solid (TSS) and biological oxygen demand (BOD). The conventional ways for POME wastewater treatment have both economical and environmental disadvantages. In this study, the potential of ultrasonic-assisted membrane anaerobic system (UMAS) was evaluated as alternative and cost effective method for treating POME wastewater to avoid fouling. The UMAS treatment efficiency was greatly improved by UMAS introduction. The membrane fouling and polarization at the membrane surface was significantly reduced. This research had proved that UMAS is the effective way to treat POME. The removal efficiency of COD was 95% with HRT of 6 days. The BOD removal efficiency was 71.59% while TSS removal rate was from 91 to 99.5%.The methane gas production efficiency was 94.14%.The UMAS treatment efficiency was greatly improved by UMAS introduction. The membrane fouling and polarization at the membrane surface was significantly reduced. This research had achieved the objectives by resolve the problem statement.
Book Synopsis International Perspectives on Water Quality Management and Pollutant Control by : Nigel W.T. Quinn

This book was released on 2013-02-27 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The level of surface water quality protection is variable around the world in large part due to the relative effectiveness of environmental regulation and the degree to which science influences the regulatory process. In the United States, at the federal level, the Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) has been an effective policy and water quality management tool for dealing with both point source and non-point source pollution. The TMDL provides a rational framework for estimating the assimilative capacity of the receiving water body for certain contaminants and applying factors of safety and incorporating acceptable levels of water quality criteria violation - provided the local stakeholders have a say in the decision making process. This collection of articles from around the world are good examples of the application of sound scientific principles to solve pressing water quality problems.
