Dimotakis and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 89 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Experiments have been carried out using laser-Doppler velocimetry in conjunction with Pitot and surface-friction instrumentation for the measurement of the mean flow, the velocity fluctuations, and the Reynolds stresses in turbulent boundary layers at constant pressure in subsonic and supersonic flows. Part I of this work was a detailed analysis of the mean flow as observed using Pitot-tube, Preston-tube, and floating-element balance instrumentation. The present work (Part II) is a description of both the mean and the fluctuating components of the flow, and of the Reynolds stress as observed using a dual forward-scattering laser-Doppler velocimenter. A detailed description of the instrument, and of the data analysis techniques, have been included in order to fully document the data. A detailed comparison is made between the laser-Doppler results and those presented in Part I, and an assessment is made of the ability of the laser-Doppler velocimeter to measure the details of the flows involved.

This book was released on 2006-05-11 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A good understanding of turbulent compressible flows is essential to the design and operation of high-speed vehicles. Such flows occur, for example, in the external flow over the surfaces of supersonic aircraft, and in the internal flow through the engines. Our ability to predict the aerodynamic lift, drag, propulsion and maneuverability of high-speed vehicles is crucially dependent on our knowledge of turbulent shear layers, and our understanding of their behavior in the presence of shock waves and regions of changing pressure. Turbulent Shear Layers in Supersonic Flow provides a comprehensive introduction to the field, and helps provide a basis for future work in this area. Wherever possible we use the available experimental work, and the results from numerical simulations to illustrate and develop a physical understanding of turbulent compressible flows.
Book Synopsis Theoretical Analysis of Stationary Potential Flows and Boundary Layers at High Speed by : Klaus Oswatitsch
Download or read book Theoretical Analysis of Stationary Potential Flows and Boundary Layers at High Speed written by Klaus Oswatitsch and published by . This book was released on 1948 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Summary: The present report consists of two parts. The first part deals with the two-dimensional stationary flow in the presence of local supersonic zones. A numerical method of integration of the equation of gas dynamics is developed. Proceeding from solutions at great distance from the body the flow pattern is calculated step by step. Accordingly the related body form is obtained at the end of the calculation. The second part treats the relationship between the displacement thickness of laminar and turbulent boundary layers and the pressure distribution at high speeds. The stability of the boundary layer is investigated, resulting in basic differences in the behavior of subsonic and supersonic flows. Lastly, the decisive importance of the boundary layer for the pressure distribution, particularly for thin profiles, is demonstrated.

Book Synopsis Holographic Interferometry Measurements of Subsonic Turbulent Boundary Layers by : D. W. Sinclair
Download or read book Holographic Interferometry Measurements of Subsonic Turbulent Boundary Layers written by D. W. Sinclair and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Laser holographic interferometry was applied to the measurement of density profiles of two-dimensional planar turbulent boundary layers on the wall of the Acoustic Research Tunnel (ART) at the Arnold Engineering Development Center (AEDC). Holograms were produced at Mach numbers 0.50 and 0.65 by the finite fringe, single-plate, dual-exposure method. The reconstructed image from this type of hologram contains fringes that are shifted relative to a reference fringe by an amount that is proportional to the difference in the densities at the two points. Therefore, it was possible to determine the density profiles by measuring the fringe shifts appearing in the reconstructed images. The results of two velocity-temperature relations are presented, and compared to data obtained by pitot, hot-wire, and split-film probes. A description of the experimental facility, hardware for data acquisition, data reduction methods, and a discussion of the problems encountered in the holographic interferometry technique are presented.
Book Synopsis Effects of Acoustic and Vortical Disturbances on the Turbulent Boundary Layer at Free-stream Mach Number 0.5 by : John A. Benek

This book was released on 1977 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An experimental investigation of the effects of free-stream disturbances on the development of a turbulent boundary layer is described. The data, obtained at a free-stream Mach number of 0.5, indicated: (1) compared to the baseline acoustic disturbances of 133 db, acoustic disturbances of up to 150 db did not significantly alter the turbulent boundary-layer skin friction, displacement thickness, or momentum thickness and (2) compared to the baseline vortical disturbances of 0.5 percent of the free-stream velocity, vortical disturbances of one percent of the free-stream velocity considerably altered the boundary-layer skin friction, displacement thickness, and momentum thickness, as well as their growth rates.
