Book excerpt: "TRB's National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) Synthesis 433: Significant Findings from Full-Scale Accelerated Pavement Testing documents and summarizes significant findings from the various experimental activities associated with full-scale accelerated pavement testing (f-sAPT) programs that have taken place between 2000 and 2011. The report also identifies gaps in knowledge related to f-sAPT and where future research may be needed. NCHRP Synthesis 433 is designed to expand the f-sAPT base of knowledge documented in NCHRP Syntheses 325 and 235, both with the same title of Significant Findings from Full-Scale Accelerated Pavement Testing. f-sAPT is the controlled application of a wheel loading, at or above the appropriate legal load limit, to a pavement system to determine pavement response in a compressed time period. The acceleration of damage is achieved by one or more of the following factors: increased repetitions, modified loading conditions, imposed climatic conditions, and thinner pavements with a decreased structural capacity which have shorter design lives"--

This book was released on 1995 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Texas Department of Transportation (TXDOT) receives about 75 to 100 permit requests for superheavy load moves annually. Most of the moves take place in the southeast region of the state due to the proximity to the Gulf of Mexico and the presence of navigational inland waterways. Gross vehicle weights associated with these moves range from 1112 kN to over 8896 kN and include loads like dragline components, off-shore pipe-laying equipment, oil pressure veseels, and electric transformers. The number of superheavy load permit applications has increased over the years. Before a permit can be issued, TxDOT needs to determine whether the proposed route is structurally adequate to sustain the superheavy load. The analysis of damage potential under superheavy loads concerns the likelihood of a rapid, load-induced shear failure as opposed to the long-term accumulation of permanent deformation and fatigue due to repeated load applications. In this project, researchers developed a procedure for evaluating the potential for pavement damage prior to a superheavy load move based on the Mohr-Coulomb yield criterion. In developing this procedure, researchers investigated the sensitivity of the Mohr-Coulomb yield criterion to changes in the predicted stress state and material strength parameters; compared different models for evaluating pavement response under vehicle loading; and investigated the effect of different load configurations on the predicted pavement response and yield function value. Using the results from these investigations, researchers developed a two-stage procedure for the structural assessment of superheavy load routes which utilizes existing capabilities within TxDOT. Flexibility is provided to conduct structural evaluations with varying degrees of complexity depending on the quantity and quality of information available on the proposed superheavy load route. In the first stage, structural adequacy is evaluated by means of charts with minimal requirements for materials characterization. Relationships are provided for estimating resilient and strength parameters of base and subgrade materials from results of simple soil tests. Should the initial results indicate that the structure is inadequate to accommodate the expected superheavy load, then the second stage analysis should be conducted which requires a more detailed characterization of the proposed route. In this stage, the evaluation uses an incremental non-linear layered elastic computer program. This report documents the development of the methodology for permitting superheavy load moves.

Book excerpt: This compendium gathers the latest advances in the area of Accelerated Pavement Testing (APT), a means of testing full-scale pavement construction in an accelerated manner for structural deterioration in a very short term. Compiling novel research results presented at the 5th International Conference on Accelerated Pavement Testing, San Jose, Costa Rica, the volume serves as a timely and highly relevant resource for materials scientists and engineers interested in determining the performance of a pavement structure during its service life (10+ years) in a few weeks or months.

This book was released on 2012 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of this study was to develop an approach for incorporating techniques to interpret and evaluate deflection data for network-level pavement management system (PMS) applications. The first part of this research focused on identifying and evaluating existing techniques, seeking out those that were simple, reliable, and easy to incorporate into current PMS practices, as well as those that produced consistent results. The second part of the research detailed the development of guidelines for the application of recommended techniques and procedures for determining optimum falling weight deflectometer (FWD) test spacing and data collection frequency. While there are many viable techniques available for evaluating the structural capacity of pavements that use FWD for project-level analysis, many of these techniques are time consuming and require an experienced analyst. As a result, using pavement deflection testing for network-level analysis has been limited to date. This guide provides information for the assessment of pavement structural performance for PMS applications. It reflects the general findings presented in the accompanying final report, Simplified Techniques for Evaluation and Interpretation of Pavement Deflections for Network-Level Analysis (FHWA-HRT-12-023).
