Book excerpt: "Previous studies of Pacific salmon migration behaviors at Snake River dams indicated slow passage at transition pools in adult fishways. In 2001 and 2002, we conducted an experiment to evaluate if modified weirs affected adult salmon and steelhead passage times and route selection through the Lower Granite Dam transition pool. Attraction flows through weir orifices were experimentally manipulated using removable aluminum panels. Results from the 2001-2002 studies indicated a greater percentage of radiotagged spring–summer Chinook salmon passed straight through the transition pool and median transition pool passage times were significantly lower when the panels were deployed. Based on these results, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers modified the fish ladder at Lower Granite Dam in 2006 prior to the migration season. Modifications included narrowing the transition pool and increasing the weir crest height of the lowest eleven weirs. To evaluate the effectiveness of the modifications, we radio-tagged and monitored adult spring-summer and fall Chinook salmon and steelhead as they passed Little Goose and Lower Granite dams and compared their performance to that measured during previous years without modifications in place. Transition pool passage times at Lower Granite Dam for spring-summer Chinook salmon were significantly faster in 2006 than in 2003 and 2004 (non-modified years). Spring-summer Chinook salmon passage times were also faster in 2008, though the results were not statistically different (P > 0.05) than in 2003 and 2004. The other runs exhibited similar, though not statistically different responses. The frequencies of downstream exits from the Lower Granite transition pool to the tailrace for spring Chinook salmon in 2006 and 2008 were lower than in 2003 and 2004. We also compared the difference in passage times by individual fish at Little Goose and Lower Granite dams in an effort to statistically control for interannual variation in river environment. Comparisons of interannual differences in passage times at the two dams indicated that passage times decreased for individual fish at Lower Granite Dam compared to Little Goose dam in modified years compared to the non-modified years. Passage times through the Lower Granite transition pool were also faster in 2006 and 2008 than in 2003 and 2004. However, the transition pool passage times were not as low as those achieved during the experimental weir modifications in 2001 and 2002 and passage behavior only improved for spring-summer Chinook salmon during 2008 with the permanent modification. This difference may have been caused by differences in river conditions among years, differences in fishway hydraulics between the experimental and permanent modifications, or both."--Abstract (page iii).

Book excerpt: "Evaluation of fishway entrance use and passage through fishways by spring–summer Chinook salmon Oncorhynchus tshawytscha, steelhead O. mykiss, and sockeye salmon O. nerka at Bonneville Dam were objectives of the adult salmon and steelhead passage project in 1997, 1998, 2000, 2001, and 2002. Critical parameters studied were times for a fish to first approach and first enter a fishway, total time to pass over the dam, which openings were approached, where fish entered and exited fishways, and fish passage through transition pools and over the dam. We report here on study results from five years of spring–summer Chinook salmon data, four years of steelhead data, and one year of sockeye salmon data."--From executive summary (page v).

Book excerpt: "Previous studies have identified Lower Granite Dam fish ladder as having as high temperature differentials during summer months. In 2008, we monitored water temperatures within the fish ladder and the passage of radio-tagged adult salmonids at Lower Granite Dam. Water temperatures in the fish ladder were cooler than in previous study years, with only five percent or less of all radio-tagged fish passing the dam when water temperatures differences between upper and lower segments of the fishway exceeded 1 °C. The warmest average monthly temperatures occurred in August and differences in temperature between the top and bottom of ladder the ladder exceeding 1 °C occurred on one day in July and one day in October. A significantly higher percentage of spring-summer Chinook salmon (O. tshawytscha) exited the fish ladder to the tailrace when temperatures exceeded 18 °C than when water ladder temperatures were less than 18 °C. We did not find differences in the percent of steelhead (O. mykiss) and fall Chinook salmon that exited the ladder when temperatures were greater than or less than 18 °C. Median dam and transition pool passage times were higher for all runs of radio-tagged fish when water ladder temperatures exceeded 18 °C. Most tagged fish that exited the dam to the tailrace did so after reaching the transition pool area of the ladder regardless of temperature. We found a higher percentage of fish overnighted when water temperatures were greater than 18 °C. Since 2008 was a relatively cool year, future studies may be needed to more effectively evaluate the relationship between fish passage and temperature gradients within the fish ladder at Lower Granite Dam."--Abstract.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study on the effect of fishway slope on rate of passage of salmonids was made by comparing passage time of fish in two fishways with different slopes. It is based mainly on steelhead (Salmo gairdneri) but includes some chinook (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) and silver (Oncorhynchus kisutch) salmon. Both fishways were pool-and-overfall type in which 6 feet of elevation was gained. Passage of steelhead in the 1:8-slope fishway was in general, as fast as or faster than in the 1:16-slope fishway. In the 1:8-slope fishway, the passage time appeared to increase with an increase in rise between pools. In the 1:16-slope fishway, the passage time of steelhead increased as the season progressed.

Book excerpt: A study of the upstream migration of adult spring and summer chinook salmon Oncorhynchus tshawytscha and steel head 0. mykiss past the four lower Snake River dams, through the reservoirs, and into the tributaries of the Snake River drainage was initiated in 1991 and continued in 1992 and 1993. The objectives were to evaluate the effect of spill, powerhouse operation, and flows on the rates of passage of the fish at the dams, migration through the reservoirs, the fishway entrances used, fallback at the dams, and movements into the tributaries upstream from the reservoirs.

Book excerpt: The stress response of chinook salmon and steelhead trout smolts to passage through three different flumes was tested by assaying plasma cortisol concentrations before and after flume passage. In addition, descaling of fish was recorded before and after flume passage, and the ability of the flumes to pass adult chinook salmon and debris was determined. The three flumes were a corrugated metal flume (CMF), a 4- foot wide baffled flume (BF4), and a 2-foot wide baffled flume (BF2). Each flume was tested under conditions: 1) at night, 2) during the day with a perforated metal cover, which reduced the amount of light entering the flume by about half (partially darkened), and 3) during the day with the perforated cover and additional double layer of black plastic (completely darkened). Plasma cortisol concentrations were not significantly elevated in chinook salmon smolts after passage through any of the flumes (P>0.2, ANOVA). In daytime tests of partially and completely darkened flumes cortisol concentrations were consistently decreased following flume passage. We attribute this to pre-test stress (holding of fish in small tanks) and to the absence of a strong stress response to flume passage. Flume design did not have a significant effect on cortisol concentrations (P=0.9). Total darkening of the flumes during daytime was beneficial: cortisol concentrations were lower (P=0.03) in chinook salmon smolts passing through completely darkened flumes than in smolts passing through partially darkened flumes. 16 refs., 15 figs.
