Book excerpt: Poor bonding between asphalt pavement overlays and the substrate pavement layer can greatly influence the long term performance of hot mix asphalt (HMA) in the form of premature cracking and fatigue. The primary method to achieve bonding between layers is by hot mix asphalt (HMA) in the form of premature cracking and fatigue. The primary method to achieve bonding between layers is by using an asphalt emulsion tack coat. Additionally, field staff is charged with determining whether an existing pavement, especially a milled surface, is clean enough prior to tack coat placement, to ensure an adequate bond.

Book excerpt: Asphalt pavements are usually constructed in several layers and most of pavement design and evaluation techniques assume that adjacent asphalt layers are fully bonded together and no displacement is developed between them. However, full bonding is not always achieved and a number of pavement failures have been linked to poor bond condition Theoretical research showed that the distribution of stresses, strains and deflections within the pavement structure is highly influenced by the bond condition between the adjacent layers. Slippage at the interface between the binder course and the base could significantly reduce the life of the overall pavement structure. If slippage occurs within the interface between the surfacing and the binder course, the maximum horizontal tensile strain at the bottom of the surfacing becomes excessive and causing the rapid surfacing failure. This condition becomes worse when a significant horizontal load exists. This thesis is concerned with the assessment of bond between asphalt layers. The main objective of this thesis is to provide guidance for assessing bond between asphalt layers, in order to facilitate the construction of roads with more assurance of achieving the design requirements. Further modification to the modified Leutner test has been performed. An investigation regarding the torque bond test and the effect of trafficking on bond have also been undertaken. A bond database on the modified Leutner test has been developed. An analysis has been performed to estimate the achievable values of bond strengths on typical UK road constructions obtained from the bond database. The values were then compared to the results from an analytical analysis to predict the required bond strength at the interface and other standards in Germany and Switzerland to recommend specification limits of bond strength for UK roads.

Book excerpt: A typical flexible pavement structure used by the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) consists of several layers, including the subgrade, aggregate base, asphalt concrete base, intermediate course, and surface course. A light application of an asphaltic material, referred to as tack coat, is commonly used between the asphalt layers to distribute the stresses between the layers. The objective of this study was to evaluate the interlayer bond strength resulting from the use of three tack coat materials (SS-1h, rubberized tack, and non-tracking tack) commonly used in Ohio. The interface bond strength of laboratory-prepared samples was measured using a specialized fixture developed by Pine Test Equipment, Inc. that allows loading the samples in shear until failure along the interface. This study investigated the effect of the specimen diameter (4-inch and 6-inch), tack coat application rate (0.04 gallon/yd2 and 0.1 gallon/yd2), testing temperature (20°C and 25°C), and loading rate (0.1 inch/min and 2 inch/min) on the interface bond strength. The rheological properties of the three tack coat materials were also evaluated in accordance with AASHTO T 59-09. The highest interface bond strength was observed for the non-tracking tack, followed by the SS-1h and the rubberized tack, which were found to have comparable bond strengths to laboratory samples prepared with no tack coat. The optimum tack coat application rate was found to be dependent on the tack coat material type and the testing conditions (i.e., testing temperature and loading rate). A decrease in the interface bond strength was observed for the rubberized tack with the increase in the tack coat application rate, while an increase in the interface bond strength was noticed for SS-1h and the non-tracking tack with the increase in the tack coat application rate. In general, comparable results were obtained using the 4-inch and the 6-inch samples. As expected, higher interface bond strength was observed at the lower testing temperature for all samples. In addition, a higher interface bond strength was obtained for all samples when using the faster loading rate of 2 inch/min.

Book excerpt: This report summarizes Phase 1 research work that was completed to document the current state-of-the-practice for using tack coat with micro-surfacing projects by state and provincial transportation agencies, summarize studies on the evaluation of bond strength between micro-surfacing mixes and existing pavement surface, and identify available tests that are used for measuring the interface bond strength to determine the most appropriate one to use in micro-surfacing applications. A national survey of transportation agencies was conducted to collect information from those agencies on using tack coat for micro-surfacing applications. The survey results indicated that there is no consensus among responding transportation agencies about the importance of using tack coat for micro-surfacing applications. Most agencies that use tack coat with micro-surfacing believe that it is critical for providing adequate bonding with the underlying surface, while the majority of the agencies that do not use tack coat believe that it is not needed, as adequate bonding can be provided by the emulsion in the micro-surfacing mix. However, some agencies that stopped using tack coat with micro-surfacing (such as Indiana DOT and Michigan DOT) have noted some debonding issues and decided or are considering adding a requirement for tack coat usage. The survey results also indicated that none of the responding agencies are performing field tests to evaluate the bonding strength of micro-surfacing mixes. The results of the literature review conducted in Phase 1 of this project indicated that achieving adequate bonding between the micro-surfacing mix and the existing pavement is important to ensure full load transfer between the micro-surfacing layer(s) and the existing pavement. In addition, some studies suggested that the agencies that do not require using tack coat with micro-surfacing assume that the consistency of the micro-surfacing mix permits it to be evenly spread over the pavement surface, forming an adequate bond to the surface. The literature review was used to identify several candidate tests for the evaluation of the bond strength of micro-surfacing mixes. Based on the results of Phase 1 it was recommended that the testing matrix for Phase 2 include the following variables: Existing surface conditions, micro-surfacing mix type, micro-surfacing mix residual binder content, tack coat application rate, and tack coat material type. It was also recommended that the variables be evaluated through a field-testing program. Furthermore, it was recommended to consider two types of field bond strength tests for Phase 2: pull-off and torque bonding tests.

Few states require the use of tack coat, assuming it will allow a proper bonding at the interface between the micro-surfacing layer and existing pavement. On the other hand, the majority of the states do not use tack coat. They believe is that the consistency of the micro-surfacing mix allows it to be spread uniformly, resulting in a proper bond at the interface. However, no research has been conducted to investigate the effectiveness of tack coat on interface bond strength between the micro-surfacing layer and the existing pavement. The objective of this study was twofold. First, a laboratory test scheme was developed to characterize the bond strength between the micro-surfacing layer and the existing pavement hot mix asphalt (HMA) surface. In order to evaluate the effectiveness of tack coat, samples were prepared in the laboratory with varying tack coat application rate. Additionally, different percentages of residual binder content were also used to study the influence of residual binder content on bond strength characteristics. Two types of bonding strength tests were used including “Pull-off” and “Torque” bonding strength test. The pull-off test was carried out using two commercially available devices: 1- Proceq DY 206 and 2- Com-Ten pull off tester. A torque device was developed in the laboratory to carry out the torque tests. Secondly, a field-testing test program was4 established which include in-situ testing of the bond strength and laboratory testing of the cores collected from the field.

Since the strength of the bond at interface between layers plays a significant role in improving the structural integri-ty and the performance of pavement structures, tack coat materials and methods used for their application during construction are important in providing an adequate bond strength between pavement lifts. Tack coat is a bituminous liquid asphalt (a mixture of water, asphalt binder, and an emulsifying agent) and usually applied to provide a bond between pavement lifts. The absence of the tack coat adhesion at the interface between layers leads to increased stresses in the pave-ment structure. An inspection procedure to monitor the performance of the interlayer bond dur-ing the pavement use phase and identifying bond failures is critical to improve pavement man-agement systems and develop more effective pavement design strategies. In this study, two dif-ferent devices were developed at Oregon State University to evaluate the tack coat performance in the field. First, the wireless Oregon Field Tack Coat Tester (OFTCT) device was developed to predict the long-term performance of the in-situ tack coat bond strength and to evaluate the impact of pave-ment surface cleanliness before tack coat application on bond strength. Correlations between OFTCT field test results and the results of laboratory shear tests conducted with cores taken from the field were investigated to determine the effectiveness of the OFTCT tests. A new heat-ing system (an adjustable heat gun and environmental chamber) was developed to reduce the tack coat’s curing time in the field and control temperature during testing. The results indicated that the OFTCT device can be successfully utilized in the field to differentiate between clean and dusty surfaces before tack coat application. By using wireless sensors controlled by a laptop, practicality of the device was improved to reduce the testing time. The correlation between OFTCT and laboratory shear test results was determined to be statistically significant (R2 = 0.5189). OFTCT was able to identify the tack coats with high and low interlayer shear strength (ISS). Second, a new low cost field test device, Oregon Field Torque Tester (OFTT), was developed to evaluate the long-term post-construction tack coat performance of pavement sections. Correla-tions between OFTT field test results and the results of laboratory shear tests conducted with cores taken from the field were investigated to determine the effectiveness of the OFTT tests. The peak torque values at failure measured by the OFTT were observed to be highly correlated with the measured lab shear strengths. To conclude, both of the developed devices are expected to be adapted as field tests to evaluate the performance of tack coats in the field and to mitigate pavement distresses observed on roadways.

Book excerpt: In the recent past, new materials, laboratory and in-situ testing methods and construction techniques have been introduced. In addition, modern computational techniques such as the finite element method enable the utilization of sophisticated constitutive models for realistic model-based predictions of the response of pavements. The 7th RILEM International Conference on Cracking of Pavements provided an international forum for the exchange of ideas, information and knowledge amongst experts involved in computational analysis, material production, experimental characterization, design and construction of pavements. All submitted contributions were subjected to an exhaustive refereed peer review procedure by the Scientific Committee, the Editors and a large group of international experts in the topic. On the basis of their recommendations, 129 contributions which best suited the goals and the objectives of the Conference were chosen for presentation and inclusion in the Proceedings. The strong message that emanates from the accepted contributions is that, by accounting for the idiosyncrasies of the response of pavement engineering materials, modern sophisticated constitutive models in combination with new experimental material characterization and construction techniques provide a powerful arsenal for understanding and designing against the mechanisms and the processes causing cracking and pavement response deterioration. As such they enable the adoption of truly "mechanistic" design methodologies. The papers represent the following topics: Laboratory evaluation of asphalt concrete cracking potential; Pavement cracking detection; Field investigation of pavement cracking; Pavement cracking modeling response, crack analysis and damage prediction; Performance of concrete pavements and white toppings; Fatigue cracking and damage characterization of asphalt concrete; Evaluation of the effectiveness of asphalt concrete modification; Crack growth parameters and mechanisms; Evaluation, quantification and modeling of asphalt healing properties; Reinforcement and interlayer systems for crack mitigation; Thermal and low temperature cracking of pavements; and Cracking propensity of WMA and recycled asphalts.
