Book excerpt: Asphalt mixture performance tests (AMPTs) are developed to complement the Superpave volumetric mix design procedure and to reliably measure the mechanical response characteristics of the asphalt mixtures. The AMPT protocols, such as dynamic modulus, flow time and flow number test protocols, and the computational algorithms for post-processing of data are in the development stages and require further refinement. In this investigation, AMPTs were carried out on asphalt mixtures with unmodified, polymer-modified, and crumb-rubber-modified binders. Dynamic modulus test was carried out for a wide range of temperatures and frequencies and master curves were constructed. It was observed that the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) procedure for master curves does not take into account the influence of phase angle, and this could hinder the effective use of this input in pavement design and analysis. Flow time and flow number tests were carried out for an extended time of 100 000 s (cycles) rather than the currently practised 10 000 s (cycles) protocol. The test data was used in assessing the various algorithms for evaluating flow values. A wheel tracking test was also carried out and it was found that the response of mixtures could be correlated to wheel tracking test results in a qualitative manner to the flow time test.

Book excerpt: The global response to COVID-19 has demonstrated the importance of vigilance and preparedness for infectious diseases, particularly influenza. There is a need for more effective influenza vaccines and modern manufacturing technologies that are adaptable and scalable to meet demand during a pandemic. The rapid development of COVID-19 vaccines has demonstrated what is possible with extensive data sharing, researchers who have the necessary resources and novel technologies to conduct and apply their research, rolling review by regulators, and public-private partnerships. As demonstrated throughout the response to COVID-19, the process of research and development of novel vaccines can be significantly optimized when stakeholders are provided with the resources and technologies needed to support their response. Vaccine Research and Development to Advance Pandemic and Seasonal Influenza Preparedness and Response focuses on how to leverage the knowledge gained from the COVID-19 pandemic to optimize vaccine research and development (R&D) to support the prevention and control of seasonal and pandemic influenza. The committee's findings address four dimensions of vaccine R&D: (1) basic and translational science, (2) clinical science, (3) manufacturing science, and (4) regulatory science.

Book excerpt: This report highlights findings from Phase I of a project designed to evaluate the ruggedness of the standards for cyclic fatigue testing using an Asphalt Mixture Performance Tester (AMPT). These standards include AASHTO TP 107-18 and 133-19, which are applicable to 100-mm diameter and 38-mm diameter test specimens, respectively. The ruggedness evaluation conducted adheres to the requirements of ASTM E1169-14 and integrates ASTM C1067-12 recommendations, which are specifically for construction materials. The experimental factors evaluated included air-void content, specimen height, diameter difference between loading platen and specimen, loading-platen parallelism, rest period between the dynamic modulus fingerprint and cyclic fatigue test, strain level, and temperature. Based on the outcomes of this experiment and several supplementary studies, changes to the AASHTO TP 107-18 and TP 133-19 protocols were proposed.

Book excerpt: In a previous JTRP project published in 2010, Identification of Laboratory Techniques to Optimize Superpave HMA Surface Friction Characteristics, a laboratory procedure to polish and test the frictional properties of asphalt mixtures was developed. Subsequently, the procedure has been used in other research efforts to evaluate the frictional properties of recycled asphalt pavement (RAP) and local (possibly marginal) aggregate blends and for other testing purposes. Most notably, the procedure has been developed into Indiana Test Method (ITM) 221, "Acceptance Procedures for HMA Surface Mixture Coarse Aggregates for ESAL ¿10,000,000." The method requires compaction, polishing and testing of 500 mm by 500 mm (20 in. by 20 in.) square slabs of asphalt mix. This research project was initiated based to explore the possibility of expanding use of the lab polishing/testing procedure to test gyratory specimens or field cores. It was envisioned that such a method could be used during mix design as a check on potential frictional properties and/or as a quality acceptance test. A means of fabricating a circular test ring from seven cylindrical specimens was developed and used to test five different plant produced mixtures. Comparisons of ITM 221 slabs, gyratory specimens compacted to different air void contents and field cores showed cylindrical specimens could yield similar results to the accepted slab test method.

Book excerpt: Currently, asphalt mixtures are designed using volumetric concepts to determine optimum asphalt content levels with no means of verifying mixture performance prior to field production and placement. A new design methodology called Balanced Mixture Design (BMD) promotes the use of evaluating and design asphalt mixture using rutting and fatigue cracking methods and criteria to achieve an optimum asphalt content that will result in an asphalt mixture performing well in rutting and fatigue cracking scenarios -thereby "balancing" the asphalt mixture performance. A study was conducted using approved New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) approved asphalt mixtures within this BMD procedure. The approved asphalt mixtures were previously designed using volumetric concepts, allowing for a comparison between performance-based design procedures (BMD) and volumetric procedures. The study showed that of the eleven (11) asphalt mixtures evaluated, six (6) of the asphalt mixtures were found to not meet the BMD fatigue cracking based minimum asphalt content. None of the approved asphalt mixtures failed the rutting performance criteria. The data generated in the study also enabled for the recommendation of performance criteria for the High Temperature IDT Strength test for rutting and IDEAL-CT Index test for fatigue cracking.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The research presented in this report was conducted to identify the important factors influencing the water sensitivity of asphalt paving mixtures, and to develop a test method to evaluate water sensitivity of asphalt concrete mixtures for mix design. The test method was to be performance related. A review of current procedures revealed that no single method was suitable for evaluation and related to field performance. Based on a hypothesis that air voids in the mixture may be the major source and cause of water damage, a test system was developed to evaluate the major factors that influence water sensitivity. The Environmental Conditioning System (ECS) was used to develop a test procedure that includes specimen preparation; measurement of permeability using air, water, or both; vacuum wetting; cycling at various temperatures; and continuous repeated loading while monitoring resilient modulus after each conditioning cycle.

Book excerpt: The results of dynamic modulus testing have become one of the primarily used performance criteria to evaluate the laboratory properties of asphalt mixtures. This test is commonly conducted to characterize asphalt mixtures mechanistically using an asphalt mixture performance tester as developed in NCHRP Project 9-29. The typical test specimen geometry consists of a cylinder having a 100-mm diameter and a 150-mm height. This geometry is practical for laboratory-prepared specimens produced using a gyratory compactor. However, the specimen scale is problematic when the test specimen is prepared from field cores and the investigator wishes to isolate the testing to a single asphalt mixture material/layer. This is because most asphalt mixture layers, especially surface and intermediate layers, are placed having a thickness less than 150 mm. This study investigated the use of small-scale cylindrical specimens as an alternative means to conduct dynamic modulus testing of asphalt mixtures. To validate the small-scale approach, the dynamic modulus from small-scale specimens was compared to the dynamic modulus from full-size specimens (100 × 150 mm) using asphalt mixtures having a nominal maximum aggregate size (NMAS) of 9.5, 12.5, 19.0, and 25.0 mm. Small-scale cylindrical specimens having a diameter and height of 38 × 135 mm, 50 × 135 mm, 38 × 110 mm, and 50 × 110 mm were studied. Based on the findings of the study, for 9.5- and 12.5-mm NMAS mixtures, any of the four small-scale geometry dimensions appears to be a suitable alternative to the full-size specimen when the full-size specimen cannot be produced. For 19.0- and 25.0-mm NMAS mixtures, the two small-scale geometries having a diameter of 50 mm appear to be suitable alternatives to the full-size specimen when the full-size specimen cannot be produced.

Book excerpt: The aim of the studies presented in this report is the implementation of rational concepts and testing procedures for the design and manufacture of bituminous materials for applications in pavement construction. Practical test procedures are recommended for binder evaluation, mix design and performance assessment of bituminous materials. The three main topics addressed are binder testing, mix design and mechanical testing of mixtures. Each is examined through interlaboratory tests and there is a literary review of existing practices and methods for the production of polymer modified binders, mixture design and the mechanical properties of mixtures.
