Book excerpt: This report provides results of a detailed study to determine the merits of selected premium design features for (a) flexible, (b) composite, (c) jointed plain concrete and (d) continuously reinforced concrete pavements. In addition, it includes an evaluation of the effectiveness of prestressed concrete pavements in relation to four types of pavements with and without premium design features. Based upon a thorough review of design procedures of the four types of pavements, the premium features that deserve to be evaluated were identified. The review study, in addition, identified the performance/design models in evaluating those features. Following a preliminary sensitivity analysis, the features identified were incorporated in pavement design trials. Based upon performance/reliability evaluations, and life cycle cost analysis using EAROMAR II computer program, the effectiveness of the respective premium features were evaluated. The results provide clear evidence of the economic benefits of many of the premium features which might be included in the design of pavements. finally, the performance of prestressed concrete pavements was compared with that of the other four types of pavements.

Book excerpt: The continued preservation of ADOT's pavements becomes an ever- increasing issue as non-renewable resources such as mineral aggregate become more and more difficult to obtain. Historically, ADOT's design philosophies have resulted in strategies that consist primarily of mill and fill and overlay. These pavement strategies are designed for approximately a ten year life, at which time, another similar treatment would be performed. Proper design philosophies evaluate life cycle costs to select the best available design option. However, the life cycle cost consists of both the construction cost and the user cost incurred by the public through delay, etc. While construction costs are easily defined, user costs are very difficult to quantify and often times may actually exceed the actual cost of the facility being constructed. Since the user costs are not directly borne by the agency, it becomes somewhat of a philosophical discussion as to what user costs should be considered. In recent times, mineral aggregate sources have become increasingly more difficult to obtain in Arizona. However, our current design philosophies and economics requires needing new materials approximately every ten years. There is a need to consider reconstruction of significant roadways so that they can obtain design lives, perhaps as many as thirty to forty years before rehabilitation or reconstruction.

Book excerpt: A comprehensive, state-of-the-art guide to pavement design and materials With innovations ranging from the advent of Superpave™, the data generated by the Long Term Pavement Performance (LTPP) project, to the recent release of the Mechanistic-Empirical pavement design guide developed under NCHRP Study 1-37A, the field of pavement engineering is experiencing significant development. Pavement Design and Materials is a practical reference for both students and practicing engineers that explores all the aspects of pavement engineering, including materials, analysis, design, evaluation, and economic analysis. Historically, numerous techniques have been applied by a multitude of jurisdictions dealing with roadway pavements. This book focuses on the best-established, currently applicable techniques available. Pavement Design and Materials offers complete coverage of: The characterization of traffic input The characterization of pavement bases/subgrades and aggregates Asphalt binder and asphalt concrete characterization Portland cement and concrete characterization Analysis of flexible and rigid pavements Pavement evaluation Environmental effects on pavements The design of flexible and rigid pavements Pavement rehabilitation Economic analysis of alternative pavement designs The coverage is accompanied by suggestions for software for implementing various analytical techniques described in these chapters. These tools are easily accessible through the book’s companion Web site, which is constantly updated to ensure that the reader finds the most up-to-date software available.

Book excerpt: Pack: Book and CD Internationally, full-scale accelerated pavement testing, either on test roads or linear/circular test tracks, has proven to be a valuable tool that fills the gap between models and laboratory tests and long-term experiments on in-service pavements. Accelerated pavement testing is used to improve understanding of pavement behavior, and evaluation of innovative materials and additives, alternative materials processing, new construction techniques, and new types of structures. It provides quick comparisons between current and new practice and the ability to rapidly validate and calibrate models with quality data, with minimal risk at relatively low cost. Advances in Pavement Design through Full-scale Accelerated Pavement Testing is a collection of papers from the 4th International Conference on Accelerated Pavement Testing (Davies, CA, USA, 19-21 September 2012), and includes contributions on a variety of topics including: - Overview of Accelerated Pavement Testing - Establishment of New Accelerated Pavement Testing Facilities - Review of the Impact of Accelerated Pavement Testing Programs on Practice - Instrumentation for Accelerated Pavement Testing - Accelerated Pavement Testing on Asphalt Concrete Pavements - Accelerated Pavement Testing on Portland Cement Concrete Pavements - Accelerated Pavement Testing to Evaluate Functional Performance - Relating Laboratory Tests to Performance using Accelerated Pavement Testing - Development and Calibration of Empirical and Mechanistic-empirical Pavement Design Procedures and Models - Benefit-cost Analysis of Accelerated Pavement Testing Advances in Pavement Design through Full-scale Accelerated Pavement Testing will be useful to academics and professionals involved in pavement engineering.

Book excerpt: An increasing number of agencies, academic institutes, and governmental and industrial bodies are embracing the principles of sustainability in managing their activities. Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is an approach developed to provide decision support regarding the environmental impact of industrial processes and products. LCA is a field with ongoing research, development and improvement and is being implemented world-wide, particularly in the areas of pavement, roadways and bridges. Pavement, Roadway, and Bridge Life Cycle Assessment 2020 contains the contributions to the International Symposium on Pavement, Roadway, and Bridge Life Cycle Assessment 2020 (Davis, CA, USA, June 3-6, 2020) covering research and practical issues related to pavement, roadway and bridge LCA, including data and tools, asset management, environmental product declarations, procurement, planning, vehicle interaction, and impact of materials, structure, and construction. Pavement, Roadway, and Bridge Life Cycle Assessment 2020 will be of interest to researchers, professionals, and policymakers in academia, industry, and government who are interested in the sustainability of pavements, roadways and bridges.
