Book excerpt: Preference assessments for individuals with disabilities differ along many dimensions, including time requirements for implementation and probability of identifying a hierarchy of relative preferences. Some methods of assessment are also more conductive to use with individuals who exhibit problem behavior or certain prerequisite skills. Inaccurate results and loss of valuable treatment time are among the risks associated with selecting ineffective or unnecessarily lengthy procedures. The purpose of the current investigation was to evaluate a progressive model for conducting preference assessments which incorporates many of the aforementioned considerations. Concurrent-operant reinforcer evaluations were used to verify assessment findings. Based on 17 participants completed to date, the majority (i.e., 76% of all participants) progressed to reinforcer evaluation following the initial multiple-stimulus without replacement (MSWO) assessment. The free-operant method was the second most commonly implemented approach (i.e., 18% of all participants). Subsequent reinforcer evaluations confirmed assessment findings in all but two cases. Results from the investigation are discussed in terms of the utility of this particular model and possibilities for the application of alternative algorithms to behavior analytic technologies.

Five lower preferred stimuli were identified for each participant using a stimulus preference assessment. Participants were then exposed to choice and no-choice conditions using a combined alternating treatments design within a multiple baseline across participants. During choice conditions, participants were permitted to choose one stimulus from three of the five lower preferred stimuli contingent on responding. During no-choice conditions, the trainer presented one of the five stimuli contingent on responding. Differences were found for choice and no-choice conditions when the lower preferred stimuli were used as reinforcers. However, the identified stimuli were more reinforcing for typically functioning children compared to children with mild d velopmental disabilities. The results are discussed in terms of the effects of choice of stimuli as reinforcers within an educational setting for children with and without mild developmental disabilities. Researchers have compared verbal, pictorial and tangible assessments among individuals with intellectual disabilities, and have found that all three methods are valid. However, few studies have evaluated these methods in populations outside of individuals with intellectual disabilities. The purpose of the current study was to compare verbal-only and tangible-verbal preference assessment methods in a paired-choice format. Four participants, 4-6 years old, without language delays were employed. Participants selected stimuli during each type of preference assessment, creating a hierarchy for each. A reinforcer assessment was then conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of selected stimuli. Correlation coefficients were then calculated to determine the extent to which each preference assessment method was accurate. Results show that the verbal-only preference assessment method was more effective in identif'ying preference for two participants, and the verbal-tangible preference assessment method was more effective for the other two participants.

Despite the fact that they share the same objective - to nurture young children and secure their future success - the various practitioners who contribute to the care and the education of children from birth through age 8 are not acknowledged as a workforce unified by the common knowledge and competencies needed to do their jobs well. Transforming the Workforce for Children Birth Through Age 8 explores the science of child development, particularly looking at implications for the professionals who work with children. This report examines the current capacities and practices of the workforce, the settings in which they work, the policies and infrastructure that set qualifications and provide professional learning, and the government agencies and other funders who support and oversee these systems. This book then makes recommendations to improve the quality of professional practice and the practice environment for care and education professionals. These detailed recommendations create a blueprint for action that builds on a unifying foundation of child development and early learning, shared knowledge and competencies for care and education professionals, and principles for effective professional learning.
