Download or read book Biohydrogen written by Kuan-Yeow Show and published by Elsevier Inc. Chapters. This book was released on 2013-06-11 with total page 39 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In combating global warming and other environmental issues over the use of fossil fuels, extensive research has been focusing on developing hydrogen production from biological processes. Biohydrogen is considered a promising future biofuel because of its intrinsic clean and high-energy content properties and the way it is produced. In addition to being produced through environmentally friendly biological means, its conversion to energy yields only pure water, which is an ideal energy carrier in reducing greenhouse gas emissions from fossil fuel combustion. Unlike other well-developed biofuels such as bioethanol and biodiesel, biohydrogen production is still in the early stage of development. A variety of technologies are being developed for biohydrogen production. This chapter presents a review of the state-of-the-art and perspectives of bioprocess design for biohydrogen production research in the context of pathways, microorganisms, metabolic flux analysis, process design, and reactor system. Challenges and prospects of biohydrogen production are also outlined.

Book Synopsis Continuous Renal Replacement Therapies by : R. L. Mehta
Download or read book Continuous Renal Replacement Therapies written by R. L. Mehta and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The management of critically ill patients is rapidly undergoing change as new technology for the diagnosis, monitoring and treatment of these patients is being utilized. Moreover, the understanding of the pathophysiology of multi-organ failure has greatly increased, a key element in its management involving the support of organ function to allow specific interventions or time for recovery. Originally introduced as an alternative for intermittent hemodialysis, CRRT techniques are now also used for renal support not only in the traditional setting of acute renal failure, but also in other settings as diverse as liver support systems for end-stage liver disease and cancer chemotherapy. This utilization of a common mechanism of blood and plasma membrane interactions is truly an exciting advance, which is likely to be further developed in the next decade. In this multidisciplinary publication, recent advances in our understanding of pathophysiology and critical illness are highlighted, as well as emerging strategies in the management of sepsis, liver failure, acute renal failure, technical advances in CRRT and targeted intervention with these techniques. Since this publication provides articles relevant to the management of critically ill patients requiring renal support in the ICU setting, it should be read not only by nephrologists and critical care physicians, but by all those involved in the care of patients with multi-organ failure.

Experts from the United States, Canada, China, Japan, Italy, Span, Turkey, Switzerland, Hungary, and Brazil contributed 25 chapters in this book, and provided detailed descriptions of techniques for vascularised organ allografts in mice, rats, pigs, and non-human primates, as well as detailed descriptions of non-vascularised pancreatic islet and spleen allografts. Furthermore, they discussed new advances in transplantation immunology. This book provides numerous important references which were carefully selected by the authors to extend their visions and knowledge. The appropriate readers of this book include medical students, graduate students, residents, surgeons, physicians and immunologists interested in the transplantation area.

Book excerpt: Rickettsial diseases, which include typhus, spotted fever, trench fever and Q fever, are very serious infectious diseases. Rickettsiae organisms also are of interest to researchers because they have been used as bioweapons, and can serve as agents for bioterrorism. In addition, they are biologically very successful organisms despite their relatively small genome. The papers in this volume are taken from the International Conference on Rickettsiae and Rickettsial Diseases, held in Ljubljana in 2002. They include state-of-the-art discussions of functional genomics, proteomics, epidemiology, ecology and clinical and diagnostic medicine.
