Book excerpt: Wireless sensor network applications call for different kinds of network protocols at different levels of the network stack based on application requirements. A number of medium access control (MAC) protocols have been proposed in the literature. Evaluation of most of these MAC protocols have typically been based on simulation, and while such simulation provides interesting insight into the behavior of these protocols, artifacts caused by behavior of hardware is ignored. Further more, MAC protocols are usually evaluated by comparing the new protocol with others based on one or two metrics, the ones that determined the design decisions for the protocol under evaluation. In this thesis, we present a comprehensive evaluation of MAC protocols based on a set of common metrics. The evaluation is conducted by way of experiments on a test bed of real sensor hardware for different scenarios and work loads that would match different application requirements.

Book excerpt: When evaluating MAC layer network protocols for wireless sensor networks performing simulations of a protocol's operation can provide great insight into the performance of the protocol. In order to prove that a protocol will work in a real setting and not just at the theoretical level, however, there is no substitute for evaluation with a physical implementation. This thesis discusses a physical implementation and evaluation of the Many-to-One-Sensor-to-Sink (MOSS) MAC layer protocol for sink based wireless sensor networks using the MAC Layer Architecture for TinyOS. MOSS is a Time Division Multiple Access (TDMA) based protocol first proposed in an earlier work. MOSS aims to utilize the strengths and alleviate the weaknesses of TDMA. In addition to discussing and evaluating the physical MOSS implementation, the process of developing MAC layer protocol implementations with MLA is also discussed.

This book was released on 2015 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book excerpt: In this thesis, we propose an approach that combines both measurements and analytical approaches for infering a Markov chain model from the MAC protocol execution traces in order to be able to estimate the end to end delay in multi-hop transmission scenarios. This approach allows capturing the main features of WSN. Hence, a suitable Markov chain for modelling the WSN is infered. By means of an approach based on frequency domain analysis, end to end delay distribution for multi-hop scenarios is found. This is an important contribution of our approach with regard to existing analytical approaches where the extension of these models for considering multi-hop scenarios is not possible due to the fact that the arrival distribution to intermediate nodes is not known. Since local delay distribution for each node is obtained by analysing the MAC protocol execution traces for a given traffic scenario, the obtained model (and therefore, the whole end to end delay distribution) is traffic-dependant. In order to overcome this problem, we have proposed an approach based on non-linear regression techniques for generalising our approach in terms of the traffic rate. Results were validated for different MAC protocols (X-MAC, ContikiMAC, IEEE 802.15.4) as well as a well-known routing protocol (RPL) over real test-beds (IOT-LAB).

Book excerpt: Wireless sensor networks (WSN) are predicted to play a key role in future technological developments like the internet of things. Already they are beginning to be used in many applications not only in the scientific and industrial domains. One of the biggest challenges, when using WSN, is to fuse and evaluate data from different sensor nodes. Synchronizing the data acquisition of the nodes is a key enabling factor for this. So far research has been focused on synchronizing the clocks of the nodes, largely neglecting the implications for the actual measurement results. This thesis investigates the relation between synchronization accuracy and quality of measurement results. Two different classes of time synchronous data acquisition are investigated: event detection and waveform sampling. A model is developed that describes a WSN as a generic multi-channel data acquisition system, thus enabling direct comparison to other existing systems. With the help of this model it is shown, that synchronization accuracy should best be expressed as uncertainty of the acquired timing information. This way, not only the contribution of the synchronization to the overall measurement uncertainty can be assessed, but also the synchronization accuracy required for an application can be estimated. The insights from the uncertainty analysis are used to develop two distinct approaches to synchronous data acquisition: a proactive and a reactive one. It is shown that the reactive approach can also be used to efficiently implement synchronous angular sampling, i.e. data acquisition synchronous to the rotation of a machine's shaft. Furthermore, testing methods are suggested, that evaluate the synchronized data acquisition of an existing WSN as a whole. These methods can be applied to other data acquisition systems without changes, thus enabling direct comparisons. The practical realization of a WSN is described, on which the developed data acquisition methods have been implemented. All implementations were thoroughly tested in experiments, using the suggested testing methods. This way it was revealed, that a system's interrupt handling procedures may have a strong influence on the data acquisition. Furthermore, it was shown that the effective use of fixed-point arithmetic enables synchronous angular sampling in real-time during a streaming measurement. Finally, two application examples are used to illustrate the utility of the implemented data acquisition: the acoustic localization of two sensor nodes on a straight line and a simple order tracking at an induction motor test bench.
