Book excerpt: Biodiesel has come to the forefront of the energy community as a clean-burning, renewable energy that can replace the use of No. 2 Diesel fuel. Tall oil fatty acids, a by-product of the pulp and paper industry, may be utilized as a biodiesel feedstock. This thesis presents an empirical study of the acid-catalyzed esterification of tall oil fatty acids into biodiesel. Under atmospheric conditions, factorial design analysis determined the optimum parameters to be methanol ratio (6:1), sulfuric acid (5%), and temperature (60 degrees Centigrade). This reaction was tolerant to water up to 1%. A pseudo-homogeneous second order kinetic model was applied to the reaction at the optimal conditions. The Activation Energy was calculated to be 19.73 kJ/mol with a pre-exponential factor of 23.6. Quality tests were performed under ASTM D 6751-06 to evaluate the final product with tall oil methyl esters having exceptional cold flow properties with a cloud point of -10.7 degrees Centigrade.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biodiesel is one of the alternative fuels which derive from straight or used vegetable oils and animal fats. In this book, waste oil and fat were used to produce biodiesel. It was found that the conversion yield of biodiesel from waste oil is higher than that of animal fats. The biodiesel produced having lower gross heating value and viscosity compare to diesel fuel. Short-term engine performance tests were carried out using indirect injection (IDI) diesel engine fuelled with different fuels. Biodiesel blends produced higher brake power (kW) and BSFC (mL/kW), but lower engine power output (kW) as compare to normal diesel. The emission of CO, HC and NOx reduced as biodiesel blend percentage increase over engine speed range. Conversely, the power output decreased with blending percentage due to the lower energy content of the biodiesel compared to conventional diesel.

Book excerpt: This book is a comparative study of the evaluated biodiesel derived from waste vegetable oil and fossil diesel fuel in the running of diesel engine. The main objective of the research project was to add value to waste vegetable oil by converting to biodiesel for use as diesel fuel supplement and help reduce the cost of petroleum based fuel which is fast depleting. Biodiesel fuel was evaluated on the short-term performance of the selected diesel engine. The operating conditions for the modified reactor were 60L vegetable oil, 10L methanol at a temperature of 65-68 degrees centigrade. The time of reaction was 3hours. The catalyst used was 250g anhydrous Sodium hydroxide. The diesel engine operating combustion conditions were obtained at engine speed rating of 1750 rpm for both fossil diesel and waste vegetable oil derived biodiesel. The average fuel consumption was 0.3396 kg/KWh for fossil diesel fuel and 0.3804 kg/KWh for biodiesel respectively. There was no significant difference in the variation of fuel consumption and thermal efficiency for both fossil and biodiesel fuels.

It was born out of the need to produce a comprehensive work targeting at making biodiesel a come to stay product to curb the menace of environmental degradation arising from the fossil-fuel-led economy. This book evaluate the biodiesel potential of palm kernel oil from the correlation between its chemical structure and its corresponding intrinsic parameters for quality Biodiesel production with optimum cetane number, viscosity, heat of combustion, oxidative stability, cold flow properties, density and it extend to cover how Biodiesel can be prepared from palm kernel oil. The evaluative method use in this book for palm kernel oil is applicable to other oils for effective screening of oils and production of biodiesel. The method make use of palm kernel oil and Gas-chromatographic mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analytical techniques which reveal the fatty acid profile of the oil with their respective structure and percentage weight. This book have answered the question of how to know the suitable oil for a quality biodiesel.
