Book excerpt: "Una evaluación adecuada del riesgo sísmico implica tener una caracterización detallada del comportamiento de los bienes expuestos frente a eventos catastróficos. Para lograr esto, se debe utilizar la modelación probabilista debido a la gran cantidad de variables aleatorias que afectan el comportamiento estructural durante un evento sísmico. Por esta razón, se han desarrollado diferentes trabajos de investigación como el realizado por el FEMA P-58 en su guía Seismic Performance Assesment of Building (2012), donde se propone una metodología para evaluar las pérdidas económicas como función de la intensidad sísmica, para diferentes prototipos de construcciones. A pesar de la rigurosidad de estos trabajos, es posible disminuir la incertidumbre en los resultados de estos considerando las correlaciones entre estados de daño de elementos. Estas correlaciones han sido incorporadas en publicaciones internacionales por autores como Shome (et. al, 2015), Miranda (Miranda, et al., 2004) y Baker (2008), donde se utilizan métodos simplificados para incluir las correlaciones parciales entre estados de daño. Sin embargo, hasta el momento este tipo de análisis no ha sido incluido en la evaluación de la vulnerabilidad sísmica basada en pérdidas económicas debido a la dificultad que presupone definir la correlación existente entre elementos de grupos de evaluación, por la inexistencia de datos relacionados con este tipo de valoración cualitativa posterior al sismo. El presente trabajo pretende cuantificar el impacto que generan las correlaciones parciales, entre estados de daño, sobre la vulnerabilidad física basada en pérdidas económicas. Para esto, se hará uso de 5 prototipos estructurales planteados por Yamin (2017) que se analizarán por medio de una metodología simplificada desarrollada por Baker (2008)."-- Tomado del Formato de Documento de Grado.

Magma dynamics leading to unrest phenomena 4. Bridging the gap between science and decision-making Volcanic unrest is a complex multi-hazard phenomenon. The fact that unrest may, or may not lead to an imminent eruption contributes significant uncertainty to short-term volcanic hazard and risk assessment. Although it is reasonable to assume that all eruptions are associated with precursory activity of some sort, the understanding of the causative links between subsurface processes, resulting unrest signals and imminent eruption is incomplete. When a volcano evolves from dormancy into a phase of unrest, important scientific, political and social questions need to be addressed. This book is aimed at graduate students, researchers of volcanic phenomena, professionals in volcanic hazard and risk assessment, observatory personnel, as well as emergency managers who wish to learn about the complex nature of volcanic unrest and how to utilize new findings to deal with unrest phenomena at scientific and emergency managing levels. Book excerpt: Landscapes are frequently seen as fragments of natural habitat surrounded by a 'sea' of agriculture. But recent ecological theory shows that the nature of these fragments is not nearly as important for conservation as is the nature of the matrix of agriculture that surrounds them. Local extinctions from conservation fragments are inevitable and must be balanced by migrations if massive extinction is to be avoided. High migration rates only occur in what the authors refer to as 'high quality' matrices, which are created by alternative agroecological techniques, as opposed to the industrial monocultural model of agriculture. The authors argue that the only way to promote such high quality matrices is to work with rural social movements. Their ideas are at odds with the major trends of some of the large conservation organizations that emphasize targeted land purchases of protected areas.
