Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After the celebration of the 60th anniversary of the Treaties of Rome, all the issues remain unsolved in the European Union and the populist wave is ever more pressing. There are many fake-news about the EU, which Roberto Sommella, Director of External Relations of the Italian Competition Authority, founder of La Nuova Europa, columnist for Corriere della Sera and HuffPost, honorary citizen of Ventotene, home of the namesake European Manifesto, tried to unveil in his latest book, Euxit, emergency exit for Europe. In a crucial time for the EU, Sommella tries to counter the arguments of those who wish to return to national borders and currencies, starting from the effects of Brexit on British financial markets, with the aim of dismantling three clichés about migrants, the countries that profit from ECB policies and those who would like to withdraw after EU membership. Sommella hopes that the governments will call for a large conference focusing on three tasks: the drafting of a constitution Europe, the strengthening of the European Parliament powers and the reform of the EU electoral law to allow voter to choose directly the President of the Commission.

Few have as close an eye-witness view of the evolution of European Union law as judges at the ECJ. They not only observe, however, but actively work towards its development. This collection assesses the momentous contribution to European Union law made by José Luís da Cruz Vilaça. Taking those areas of law which were directly shaped by his judgments (institutional law/internal market/free movement of persons and judicial review), leading scholars assess his legacy. Through this prism, the story of EU law can be charted.

Book excerpt: "Paul Strand in Mexico" tells the story of the photographer's journeys through Mexico in the early 1930s. In search of a fresh start, Strand traveled to Mexico City in late 1932 at the invitation of Carlos Chavez, the eminent Mexican composer and conductor. The work he created during this key period reflects a time of intense productivity, creative renewal, and the evolution of Strand's foundational idea of the "collective portrait," in which he depicted a region through photographs of individuals, still lifes and studies of architecture and religious subjects. The first publication to chronicle this pivotal time in Strand's career (1932-34), "Paul Strand in Mexico "demonstrates how, through his photographic studies and work in film, Strand deepened his involvement with Mexican art, society, and revolutionary politics. Shedding new light on this little-known chapter of Strand's life, a scholarly analysis by James Krippner (Associate Professor of History at Haverford College, Pennsylvania) brings together primary research from distinguished archives and institutions in both Mexico and the United States, and Mexican photo-historian Alfonso Morales contributes an essay contextualizing this remarkable body of work within the canon of Mexican photography and film of the 1930s. Additionally, the appendix serves as the catalogue raisonne of Strand's entire photographic output in Mexico. The culmination of Strand's time in Mexico was his collaboration with Emilio Gomez Muriel and Academy Award-winning director Fred Zinnemann on the groundbreaking film, "Redes" ("The Wave") (1936). A remastered DVD version of the film is included with this essential volume. Paul Strand (1890-1976) is one of the great photographers of the twentieth century. As a youth, he studied under Lewis Hine at the Ethical Culture Fieldston School, going on to draw acclaim from such illustrious sources as Alfred Stieglitz. After World War II, Strand traveled around the world--from New England to Ghana to France to the Outer Hebrides--to photograph, and in the process created a dynamic and significant body of work.

Book excerpt: As the EU enters an increasingly uncertain phase after the 2016 Brexit referendum, Euroscepticism continues to become an increasingly embedded phenomenon within party systems, non-party groups and within the media. Yet, academic literature has paid little attention to the emergence of, and increased development of, transnational and pan-European networks of EU opposition. As the ‘gap’ between Europe’s mainstream political elites and an increasingly sceptical public has widened, pan-European spheres of opposition towards the EU have developed and evolved. The volume sets out to explain how such an innately contradictory phenomenon as transnational Euroscepticism has emerged. It draws on a variety of perspectives and case studies in a number of spheres – the European Parliament, political parties, the media, civil society and public opinion. Examining to what extent the pan-European dimension of Euroscepticism is becoming increasingly influential, it argues that opposition to European integration has for too long been viewed somewhat narrowly, through the paradigm of national party politics. This text will be of key interest to scholars, students and professionals in EU politics, European studies, political parties, and more broadly to comparative politics and international relations.

Book excerpt: In The EU-Ukraine Association Agreement and Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Area, Guillaume Van der Loo provides the first comprehensive legal analysis of this complex and controversial international agreement. While key political and legal hurdles towards the signing and conclusion of this agreement are analysed, its scope and contents are scrutinised and contrasted to other international agreements concluded by the EU. Specific attention is devoted to the ambitious “deep and comprehensive free trade area” and the unique provisions related to Ukraine’s approximation to the EU acquis. In particular, this book explores to what extent the agreement can be considered a new legal instrument for ‘EU integration without membership’.

Book excerpt: 'Uncannily accurate ... a total page-turner.' ED MILIBAND 3 May 2015: 'Britain faces a simple and inescapable choice - stability and strong government with me, or chaos with Ed Miliband' David Cameron 7 May 2015: David Cameron (Conservative) defeats Ed Miliband (Labour) in the United Kingdom general election, winning by 330 seats to 232. As Mr Cameron predicted, the following years for the UK were a period of incredible stability, growth and common-sense thinking, with very little bad news to report. Mr Miliband was not so lucky. In Chaos With Ed Miliband, we follow the main news stories and issues that have arisen since that election, in stark contrast to the turmoil, hardship, and downright anarchy that has occurred in Ed's life. From returning his overdue books to the library (£1.22 fine, paid in full), to drinking an espresso at 9.39pm at a dinner party to be polite (he was still awake at 2.13am), and visiting three different branches of Waitrose to find the right type of balsamic for his favourite niçoise dressing, I'm sure you'll agree, we can all be very thankful that Mr Cameron helped secure this period of stability and rock-solid government, and that we were all spared from what can only be described as chaos with Ed Miliband...

Book excerpt: The Lisbon Treaty modified the legal framework of EU external action and these innovations must be applied in a period of deep economic and financial crisis interacting with other more specific crises affecting the EU's external activities. This volume investigates the recent institutional and substantive developments in EU external relations law and practice in this context of multiple crises for the EU. The economic and financial crisis has a major impact on EU external action, but other crises too affect this sensitive area of the EU's activity and the book takes them into account. For instance, there is a crisis in the relationship between EU law and international law after the ECJ judgement in the Kadi case. In addition to exploring these questions, the volume also examines questions of legitimacy in fields such as foreign investment protection and arbitration. Representing the output of a powerful research team composed of leading scholars in the field this comprehensive collection will appeal to both an expert and non-expert readership.

Book excerpt: Major study of the role of European Christian democratic parties in the making of the European Union. It radically re-conceptualises European integration in long-term historical perspective as the outcome of partisan competition of political ideologies and parties and their guiding ideas for the future of Europe. Wolfram Kaiser takes a comparative approach to political Catholicism in the nineteenth century, Catholic parties in interwar Europe and Christian democratic parties in postwar Europe and studies these parties' cross-border contacts and co-ordination of policy-making. He shows how well networked party elites ensured that the origins of European Union were predominately Christian democratic, with considerable repercussions for the present-day EU. The elites succeeded by intensifying their cross-border communication and coordinating their political tactics and policy making in government. This is a major contribution to the new transnational history of Europe and the history of European integration.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Iron is a major constituent of the earth crust. However, under alkaline conditions commonly found in arid and semi-arid environments iron becomes unavailable to plants. When plants are affected by a shortage of iron their leaves become yellow (chlorotic), and both plant growth and crop yield are reduced. The roots of plants affected by iron deficiency may develop a series of responses directed to improve iron uptake, such as increased proton excretion and iron reduction capabilities or excretion of iron chela tors called siderophores. Iron deficiency affects major crops worldwide, including some of major economic importance such as fruit trees and others. Correction of iron deficiency is usually implemented through costly application of synthetic chelates. Since these correction methods are very expensive, the competitivity of farmers is often reduced and iron deficiency may become a limiting factor for the maintenance, introduction or expansion of some crops. In spite of the many years devoted to the study of iron deficiency, the knowledge of iron deficiency in soils and plants is still fragmentary in many aspects. We have only incomplete information on the processes at the molecular level that make some plant species and cultivars unable to take and utilize iron from the soil, whereas other plants grow satisfactorily under the same conditions.
