Book Synopsis European Integration in Times of Crisis by : Demosthenes Ioannou
Download or read book European Integration in Times of Crisis written by Demosthenes Ioannou and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-10-02 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Few events over the past few decades have given rise to an amount of debate and speculation concerning the state of the European Union (EU) and the future of European integration as the economic and financial crisis that began in 2007. In spite of substantial media, policy-making and academic attention, the fundamental questions of why and how the euro area (EA) has remained not only intact but also expanded and integrated further during the crisis require deeper theoretical investigation. One needs to understand not only the economics but also the politics and institutions of the crisis. A lack of such an understanding is the reason why a number of observers, at least initially, had a hard time making sense of policy-makers’ decisions (and pace thereof), including why the EA did not implode as some predicted. Economic theories provide a certain perspective for why the crisis occurred and what economic policies were and are needed to resolve it; however, they fail to capture the deeper roots and management of the crisis. In order to improve our understanding of a discussion that has oscillated between fears of EA disintegration on the one hand and the concrete advancement of integration during the crisis on the other, this special collection brings together leading scholars of European integration who apply key theoretical approaches – from liberal intergovernmentalism and neofunctionalism to other prominent theoretical accounts that have been applied to European integration such as historical institutionalism, critical political economy, normative theory, and a public opinion approach – to the economic and financial crisis. The contributions seek to analyse, understand and/or explain the events that occurred and the (re)actions to them in order to draw conclusions concerning the applicability and usefulness of their respective theoretical perspectives. This book was published as a special issue of the Journal of European Public Policy.

Book Synopsis Europe's path to crisis by : Tom Gallagher
Download or read book Europe's path to crisis written by Tom Gallagher and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2014-12-01 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The EU’s single currency crisis and the ensuing human costs have led to Europe’s biggest disaster since 1945. This book examines each of its stages and the political and social impact, and reveals the longer-term origins of the crisis, particularly the failure of elites to promote a genuine European partnership grounded in democratic values and a desire to co-exist with a national outlook. The author defends an orderly retreat from the existing model of monetary union, arguing that an alternative is needed in order for countries enduring a prolonged slump to recover, and recommending that EU chiefs should also treat the nation-state as a partner in a common emergency that needs to be overcome. This jargon-free, insightful and long-term analysis of a dangerous crisis is an invaluable book for academics and students alike. It is also an effective tool for policy-makers, citizens and business people who require an accessible and in-depth appraisal of a continuing catastrophe.
Book Synopsis Just Another Major Crisis? by : Geir Lundestad
Download or read book Just Another Major Crisis? written by Geir Lundestad and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2008-08-28 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book some of the world's leading academic experts on American-European relations provide the most up to date presentations of the topic available today. The Iraq War represented a most serious challenge to American-European relations. Some of the contributors argue that NATO, the key of the Atlantic relationship, has been harmed beyond repair. The Cold War is over; America has become more nationalist than it used to be; Europe has become more independent-minded vis-à-vis the United States. Others argue that the war was just another major crisis, like the many crises that had affected NATO even in its golden years during the Cold War. Recently the relationship has already improved a great deal; it is likely to improve even further.
