This book presents an original, interdisciplinary approach to NeWSps through three features: (i) situating the debate in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, which has transformed NeWSp business models and the everyday work life of their owners and users; (ii) repositioning and rethinking the debate on NeWSps in the context of socioeconomics and planning and comparing conditions between before and during the COVID-19 pandemic; and (iii) providing new directions for urban and regional development and resilience to the COVID-19 pandemic, considering new ways of working and living. The 17 chapters are co-authored by both leading international scholars who have studied the proliferation of NeWSps in the last decade and young, talented researchers, resulting in a total of 55 co-authors from different disciplines (48 of whom are currently involved in the COST Action CA18214 ‘The Geography of New Working Spaces and Impact on the Periphery’ 2019–2023: www.new-working-spaces.eu). More specifically, its chapters consider it as a coping mechanism in the worldwide rise of independent modes of work (i.e., self-employment) that leaves more and more workers exposed to precarity as they must organize and manage their own labor. Grounded in this perspective, this volume aims to understand the transformative social and political potentials emerging through coworking as a social and spatial practice. There is a distinct lack of discussion within coworking research on the emancipatory potentials of coworking—and if it is discussed, more cautionary views prevail, highlighting the ambivalence of coworking spaces both as a space of alternative economic practices and as integrated into market economies. The aims of this collection are twofold: First, it aims to make visible the plurality of existing practices around shared resources in coworking and the assemblages of human and non-human actors as agents of change associated with coworking and the re-organization of work and labor power. And second, it aims to develop a more emancipatory narrative for coworking and the role of coworking spaces for workers but also the different spatial contexts in which these spaces are situated. A narrative that does not emphasize entrepreneurship or coworking as the epitome of the ‘neoliberal entrepreneurial self’ as in the dominant interpretations in the current research, but rather one that centers coworking in the creation of meaningful, careful social relationships, supporting empathy and an ethics that recognizes mutual interdependencies and builds a foundation for social change. So, it is about alternative narratives, emancipation politics and the wider social role that coworking spaces might play in neighborhoods, cities or beyond because they are crucial contexts for the formation and maintenance of social relations. With this specific direction, this collection aims to bring coworking research into a fruitful dialog with other research fields-such as sociology of work, feminist perspectives on care, alternative and diverse economies, "post-capitalist" transformation, critical geography, positioning coworking within a range of progressive alternatives in the articulation of economic and social relationships.

Book excerpt: This study aims at better understanding how the massive shift to telework following the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic in spring 2020 affected workers' jobs and lives. In particular, we shed light on how this exogenous change had an impact on tasks content and work organisation dimensions like teamwork, routine, workers' autonomy and types and extent of supervisory control methods. Moreover, we explored both subjective and objective dimensions of job quality such as job satisfaction, motivation, changes in working time and pay, together with issues related to physical and mental health and more generally to work-life balance. In each of selected countries, 25 teleworking employees with different job profiles, family compositions, and personal characteristics were interviewed during the lockdown of spring 2020. The picture that emerges is quite multifaceted largely depending on workers' occupation and family composition, although some general patterns can be observed. After an initial period in which workers could gain more autonomy and decisional power at almost of levels of the hierarchy, during a stabilization period new forms of remote supervisory control have been put in place and contributed to a standardization of working routines. For some, working from home increased satisfaction and productivity, and allowed to better reconcile work-family duties. In contrast, others felt teleworking, and the ensuing communication through digital platforms, challenged the possibility to receive meaningful feedback and exchange ideas with co-workers and supervisors. At times, for workers with children in school age, the negative impact was aggravated by school closure and the general lockdown. Yet, and despite the many challenges of adapting to the sudden, obligatory and highintensity telework, most of the respondents agreed that teleworking has upsides, and would be willing to continue to work remotely in the future, at least occasionally. Before that, however, workers would like to seek greater clarity around their working conditions as teleworkers.

This activity contributes to the European Healthy Workplaces Campaign 2020-22 on MSDs, 'Healthy Workplaces Lighten the Load', which is coordinated across the EU Member States by EU-OSHA, and will also contribute to the Healthy Workplaces Campaign 2023-2025 on Digitalisation and occupational safety and health (OSH). The activity and the campaign take a holistic approach to the management of MSDs in the workplace, covering prevention and also rehabilitation and return to work. The relationship between telework and MSDs is highly relevant due to the extension of telework as a consequence of the COVID-19 pandemic and existing evidence on the impact of telework on MSDs in connection with psychosocial risk factors. For this reason, EU-OSHA has launched this study, which focuses on remote work enabled by information and communications technology (ICT) tools ('telework') and its association with psychosocial risk factors and the occurrence of MSDs. It is a qualitative study involving desk and field research to investigate in greater depth and collect evidence on the implications of telework for workers. The study focuses particularly on the OSH aspects of telework (namely psychosocial risk factors and MSDs, and the association between them) to identify policy areas for which recommendations will be formulated. The main research questions addressed by the study are:  What is the current state of knowledge about the impact of telework on the incidence of psychosocial risks and MSDs? What are the main factors modulating these impacts and have these been affected by the practice of extended telework during the COVID-19 pandemic?  How has the COVID-19 pandemic changed telework patterns and the composition of the teleworking population? To what extent are these changes temporary or permanent? What are the differences in the experience of telework among different groups of workers? - What are the new regulatory and policy developments related to the practice of telework (e.g. right to disconnect, monitoring and surveillance)? How do they impact on working conditions and, in particular, on OSH? The study suggests that the experience of extended telework during the pandemic may accelerate pre-existing trends towards increased flexibility of work arrangements enabled by the use of ICT. Telework is likely to become more significant for companies and employees, reaching new groups of workers who had very limited experience of this work arrangement before the outbreak of the pandemic.
