Book Synopsis CO2 Storage in Carboniferous Formations and Abandoned Coal Mines by : Manchao He
Download or read book CO2 Storage in Carboniferous Formations and Abandoned Coal Mines written by Manchao He and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2011-09-16 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Underground geological storage of carbon dioxide (CO2) has considerable potential for mitigating climate change. CO2 can be safely injected and stored at well characterized and properly managed sites. Injecting carbon dioxide in deep geological formations can store it underground for long periods of time. Depleted oil and gas reservoirs, saline aquifers and carboniferous formations can be used for storage of CO2, as well as in abandoned coal mines. At depths below about 800-1000m, CO2 has a liquid-like density that permits the efficient use of underground reservoirs in porous sedimentary rocks. The papers in the present volume are from leading experts in the field of CO2 storage and were presented at an International Workshop on CO2 Storage in Carboniferous Formations and Abandoned Coal Mines (Beijing, China, 8-9 January 2011). CO2 storage in abandoned coal mines appears to have a bright future. Although CO2 Storage in Carboniferous Formations and Abandoned Coal Mines is primarily intended for mining engineers, environmental engineers and engineering geologists, the book will also be useful to civil engineers, and academics and professionals in geophysics and geochemistry.

Book Synopsis Regulation in the European Electricity Sector by : Maciej M Sokołowski
Download or read book Regulation in the European Electricity Sector written by Maciej M Sokołowski and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-02-22 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the very beginning of European integration, electricity has been within the legal sphere of the EU. Much of this is found within the binding European acts making up the framework of the Energy Packages. The established legal institutions have had a significant impact on the shape of the energy market in Europe. Nevertheless, the European energy market still seems to be developing, as demonstrated by the current lively discussion about the state of the Energy Union. Regulation in the European Electricity Sector delves into European energy law and reflects on some of the primary issues related to the public legal impact on the European energy sector. The book offers a brief explanation of the background operation of the electricity sector, as well as liberalisation within the area, and traces the evolution of the EU’s approach towards the issue of public law regulation within the electricity sector. Finally, the book presents an analysis of European and national laws, considering their interpretation, and explores the future of public law regulation. Aimed at giving the reader a deep insight into a nature of the state’s presence in the power sector, this book will be of great interest to students and scholars of EU energy law and policy.

Book Synopsis Overcoming Fragmentation in Southeast Europe by : Panayiotis Getimis
Download or read book Overcoming Fragmentation in Southeast Europe written by Panayiotis Getimis and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-11-28 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the expansion of the European Union, the countries of Southeast Europe have finally been brought together within one socio-political entity. The restructuring of these economies following globalization and neoliberalization has meant that this region has become much more open to geopolitical shifts and trends. While the various countries have all entered into the slow process of European integration, the historic fragmentation of this region has led to various conflicts and contradictions in the restructuring and transition of national economies. This volume provides a theoretical and comparative overview which examines the prospects for spatial cohesion in this region. With the need to handle persisting problems and conflicts from the past while coping with new economic and political structures, Southeast Europe proves to be a challenging yet fruitful testing ground for how best to overcome fragmentation and establish a long-term process of social and economic integration.
Book Synopsis Capacity Mechanisms in the EU Energy Market by : Leigh Hancher
Download or read book Capacity Mechanisms in the EU Energy Market written by Leigh Hancher and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 443 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ensuring an adequate, long-term energy supply is a paramount concern in Europe. The security of a country's energy supply must be guaranteed, and within the EU individual member states are acting in order to safe-guard future energy production. Governments now intervene by encouraging investment in generation capacity, offering an additional revenue stream for conventional power plants in addition to the existing, heavily subsidized investments in renewable energy sources. These capacity remuneration mechanisms (or simply capacity mechanisms) have become a hot topic in the wider European regulatory debate. European electricity markets are increasingly interconnected, so the introduction of a capacity mechanism in one country not only distorts its national market but may have unforeseeable consequences for neighboring electricity markets. If these mechanisms are adopted by several member states with no supra-national coordination and no consideration for their cross-border impact, they may cause serious market distortions and put the future of the European internal electricity market at risk. These national developments are giving great cause for concern, and without a clear understanding of capacity mechanisms and their potential consequences it is difficult to predict the impact these measures will have on the internal European electricity market. This book provides readers with a thorough explanation and analysis of capacity mechanisms, written by an expert team of policy-makers, economists, and legal professionals. It will be a first point of reference for regulators and policy-makers responsible for designing optimal capacity mechanisms in Europe, and will be an invaluable resource for academics and practitioners in the fields of energy, regulation, and competition.

Book Synopsis Debating European Security and Defense Policy by : Maxime H. A. Larivé
Download or read book Debating European Security and Defense Policy written by Maxime H. A. Larivé and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-05-13 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dr. Larivé questions whether there is such a thing as a European defense and security policy. This book analyzes the integration process by clearly illustrating to the reader the two sides of the argument in order to understand the complexity of the problems in the different stages of the creation and implementation of the European defense policy. In doing so, this study asks the question of why has the process been so halting and of such limited scope? Structured in three parts: Theories, analyzing the theoretical debates raised by the positivist paradigms of neorealism, liberalism and constructivism on European security; History, reflecting on the impacts of the Cold War, American foreign policy, the 2008 economic crisis, and the evolution of European strategy; and, Actors, by looking at the role of European institutions, Member States, and the CSDP on the transformation of the European defense policy since 1998. Each chapter is composed of sub questions allowing the reader to grasp the different forces explaining the deepening or lack of the deepening process of the CSDP. Ultimately, this book offers a unique base for fostering discussion, understanding and critical thinking on the CSDP.
