Book Synopsis Toward a Geography of Art by : Thomas DaCosta Kaufmann
Download or read book Toward a Geography of Art written by Thomas DaCosta Kaufmann and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2004-03-14 with total page 505 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Art history traditionally classifies works of art by country as well as period, but often political borders and cultural boundaries are highly complex and fluid. Questions of identity, policy, and exchange make it difficult to determine the "place" of art, and often the art itself results from these conflicts of geography and culture. Addressing an important approach to art history, Thomas DaCosta Kaufmann's book offers essays that focus on the intricacies of accounting for the geographical dimension of art history during the early modern period in Europe, Latin America, and Asia. Toward a Geography of Art presents a historical overview of these complexities, debates contemporary concerns, and completes its exploration with a diverse collection of case studies. Employing the author's expertise in a variety of fields, the book delves into critical issues such as transculturation of indigenous traditions, mestizaje, the artistic metropolis, artistic diffusion, transfer, circulation, subversion, and center and periphery. What results is a foundational study that establishes the geography of art as a subject and forces us to reconsider assumptions about the place of art that underlie the longstanding narratives of art history.

Download or read book The Diez Albums written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2016-11-14 with total page 690 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The five Diez albums in Berlin, acquired by Heinrich Friedrich von Diez in Constantinople around 1789, contain more than 400 figurative paintings, drawings, fragments, and calligraphic works originating for the most part from Ilkhanid, Jalayirid, and Timurid workshops. Gonnella, Weis and Rauch unite in this volume 21 essays that analyse their relation to their “parent” albums at the Topkapı Palace or examine specific works by reflecting upon their role in the larger history of book art in Iran. Other essays cover aspects such as the European and Chinese influence on Persianate art, aspects related to material and social culture, and the Ottoman interest in Persianate albums. This book marks an important contribution to the understanding of the development of illustrative imagery in the Persianate world and its later perception.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Download or read book What Went Wrong? written by Bernard Lewis and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2002-01-24 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For many centuries, the world of Islam was in the forefront of human achievement--the foremost military and economic power in the world, the leader in the arts and sciences of civilization. Christian Europe, a remote land beyond its northwestern frontier, was seen as an outer darkness of barbarism and unbelief from which there was nothing to learn or to fear. And then everything changed, as the previously despised West won victory after victory, first in the battlefield and the marketplace, then in almost every aspect of public and even private life. In this intriguing volume, Bernard Lewis examines the anguished reaction of the Islamic world as it tried to understand why things had changed--how they had been overtaken, overshadowed, and to an increasing extent dominated by the West. Lewis provides a fascinating portrait of a culture in turmoil. He shows how the Middle East turned its attention to understanding European weaponry and military tactics, commerce and industry, government and diplomacy, education and culture. Lewis highlights the striking differences between the Western and Middle Eastern cultures from the 18th to the 20th centuries through thought-provoking comparisons of such things as Christianity and Islam, music and the arts, the position of women, secularism and the civil society, the clock and the calendar. Hailed in The New York Times Book Review as "the doyen of Middle Eastern studies," Bernard Lewis is one of the West's foremost authorities on Islamic history and culture. In this striking volume, he offers an incisive look at the historical relationship between the Middle East and Europe.
Book Synopsis Islam and the Italian Renaissance by : Anna Contadini
Download or read book Islam and the Italian Renaissance written by Anna Contadini and published by Warburg Institute. This book was released on 1999 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume considers aspects of the reciprocal influences between Italian Renaissance culture and that of the Islamic world. The papers on science and philosophy reflect Western scholars' interest in Arabic texts while those on the visual and decorative arts describe the impact of Islamic artefacts, techniques and models on Europe as much as the effects of European influences on Islam. The natural focus of the volume is on Venice and Turkey, but other Italian centres are brought into view and, on the Islamic side, the investigation also encompasses Egypt and Syria under the Mamluks, Persia under the Mongols, Timurids and Safavids, and Mughal India.
Book Synopsis Jacopo Strada and Cultural Patronage at The Imperial Court (2 Vols.) by : Dirk Jacob Jansen
Download or read book Jacopo Strada and Cultural Patronage at The Imperial Court (2 Vols.) written by Dirk Jacob Jansen and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2019-02-26 with total page 1109 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Jacopo Strada and Cultural Patronage at the Imperial Court: Antiquity as Innovation, Dirk Jansen provides a survey of the life and career of the antiquary, architect, and courtier Jacopo Strada (Mantua 1515–Vienna 1588). His manifold activities — also as a publisher and as an agent and artistic and scholarly advisor of powerful patrons such as Hans Jakob Fugger, the Duke of Bavaria and the Emperors Ferdinand I and Maximilian II — are examined in detail, and studied within the context of the cosmopolitan learned and courtly environments in which he moved. These volumes offer a substantial reassessment of Strada’s importance as an agent of change, transmitting the ideas and artistic language of the Italian Renaissance to the North.
