Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume has three chief objectives: 1) the determination of local Euler factors on classical groups in an explicit rational form; 2) Euler products and Eisenstein series on a unitary group of an arbitrary signature; and 3) a class number formula for a totally definite hermitian form. Though these are new results that have never before been published, Shimura starts with a quite general setting. He includes many topics of an expository nature so that the book can be viewed as an introduction to the theory of automorphic forms of several variables, Hecke theory in particular. Eventually, the exposition is specialized to unitary groups, but they are treated as a model case so that the reader can easily formulate the corresponding facts for other groups. There are various facts on algebraic groups and their localizations that are standard but were proved in some old papers or just called well-known. In this book, the reader will find the proofs of many of them, as well as systematic expositions of the topics. This is the first book in which the Hecke theory of a general (nonsplit) classical group is treated. The book is practically self-contained, except that familiarity with algebraic number theory is assumed.

They have also been exploited extensively by number theorists for many arithmetic purposes. Bringing together contributions from areas which do not usually interact with each other, this volume introduces diverse users of Eisenstein series to a variety of important applications. With this juxtaposition of perspectives, the reader obtains deeper insights into the arithmetic of Eisenstein series. The central theme of the exposition focuses on the common structural properties of Eisenstein series occurring in many related applications.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written by one of the leading experts, venerable grandmasters, and most active contributors $\ldots$ in the arithmetic theory of automorphic forms $\ldots$ the new material included here is mainly the outcome of his extensive work $\ldots$ over the last eight years $\ldots$ a very careful, detailed introduction to the subject $\ldots$ this monograph is an important, comprehensively written and profound treatise on some recent achievements in the theory. --Zentralblatt MATH The main objects of study in this book are Eisenstein series and zeta functions associated with Hecke eigenforms on symplectic and unitary groups. After preliminaries--including a section, ``Notation and Terminology''--the first part of the book deals with automorphic forms on such groups. In particular, their rationality over a number field is defined and discussed in connection with the group action; also the reciprocity law for the values of automorphic functions at CM-points is proved. Next, certain differential operators that raise the weight are investigated in higher dimension. The notion of nearly holomorphic functions is introduced, and their arithmeticity is defined. As applications of these, the arithmeticity of the critical values of zeta functions and Eisenstein series is proved. Though the arithmeticity is given as the ultimate main result, the book discusses many basic problems that arise in number-theoretical investigations of automorphic forms but that cannot be found in expository forms. Examples of this include the space of automorphic forms spanned by cusp forms and certain Eisenstein series, transformation formulas of theta series, estimate of the Fourier coefficients of modular forms, and modular forms of half-integral weight. All these are treated in higher-dimensional cases. The volume concludes with an Appendix and an Index. The book will be of interest to graduate students and researchers in the field of zeta functions and modular forms.

A multiple Dirichlet series is said to be perfect if it satisfies a finite group of functional equations and has meromorphic continuation everywhere. The earliest examples came from Mellin transforms of metaplectic Eisenstein series and have been intensively studied over the last twenty years. More recently, many other examples have been discovered and it appears that all the classical theorems on moments of $L$-functions as well as the conjectures (such as those predicted by random matrix theory) can now be obtained via the theory of multiple Dirichlet series. Furthermore, new results, not obtainable by other methods, are just coming to light. This volume offers an account of some of the major research to date and the opportunities for the future. It includes an exposition of the main results in the theory of multiple Dirichlet series, and papers on moments of zeta- and $L$-functions, on new examples of multiple Dirichlet

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the spring of 1976, George Andrews of Pennsylvania State University visited the library at Trinity College, Cambridge, to examine the papers of the late G.N. Watson. Among these papers, Andrews discovered a sheaf of 138 pages in the handwriting of Srinivasa Ramanujan. This manuscript was soon designated, "Ramanujan's lost notebook." Its discovery has frequently been deemed the mathematical equivalent of finding Beethoven's tenth symphony. This fifth and final installment of the authors’ examination of Ramanujan’s lost notebook focuses on the mock theta functions first introduced in Ramanujan’s famous Last Letter. This volume proves all of the assertions about mock theta functions in the lost notebook and in the Last Letter, particularly the celebrated mock theta conjectures. Other topics feature Ramanujan’s many elegant Euler products and the remaining entries on continued fractions not discussed in the preceding volumes. Review from the second volume:"Fans of Ramanujan's mathematics are sure to be delighted by this book. While some of the content is taken directly from published papers, most chapters contain new material and some previously published proofs have been improved. Many entries are just begging for further study and will undoubtedly be inspiring research for decades to come. The next installment in this series is eagerly awaited."- MathSciNet Review from the first volume:"Andrews and Berndt are to be congratulated on the job they are doing. This is the first step...on the way to an understanding of the work of the genius Ramanujan. It should act as an inspiration to future generations of mathematicians to tackle a job that will never be complete."- Gazette of the Australian Mathematical Society

Book excerpt: In this book, award-winning author Goro Shimura treats new areas and presents relevant expository material in a clear and readable style. Topics include Witt's theorem and the Hasse principle on quadratic forms, algebraic theory of Clifford algebras, spin groups, and spin representations. He also includes some basic results not readily found elsewhere. The two principle themes are: (1) Quadratic Diophantine equations; (2) Euler products and Eisenstein series on orthogonal groups and Clifford groups. The starting point of the first theme is the result of Gauss that the number of primitive representations of an integer as the sum of three squares is essentially the class number of primitive binary quadratic forms. Presented are a generalization of this fact for arbitrary quadratic forms over algebraic number fields and various applications. For the second theme, the author proves the existence of the meromorphic continuation of a Euler product associated with a Hecke eigenform on a Clifford or an orthogonal group. The same is done for an Eisenstein series on such a group. Beyond familiarity with algebraic number theory, the book is mostly self-contained. Several standard facts are stated with references for detailed proofs. Goro Shimura won the 1996 Steele Prize for Lifetime Achievement for "his important and extensive work on arithmetical geometry and automorphic forms".

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The theory of modular forms is a fundamental tool used in many areas of mathematics and physics. It is also a very concrete and “fun” subject in itself and abounds with an amazing number of surprising identities. This comprehensive textbook, which includes numerous exercises, aims to give a complete picture of the classical aspects of the subject, with an emphasis on explicit formulas. After a number of motivating examples such as elliptic functions and theta functions, the modular group, its subgroups, and general aspects of holomorphic and nonholomorphic modular forms are explained, with an emphasis on explicit examples. The heart of the book is the classical theory developed by Hecke and continued up to the Atkin–Lehner–Li theory of newforms and including the theory of Eisenstein series, Rankin–Selberg theory, and a more general theory of theta series including the Weil representation. The final chapter explores in some detail more general types of modular forms such as half-integral weight, Hilbert, Jacobi, Maass, and Siegel modular forms. Some “gems” of the book are an immediately implementable trace formula for Hecke operators, generalizations of Haberland's formulas for the computation of Petersson inner products, W. Li's little-known theorem on the diagonalization of the full space of modular forms, and explicit algorithms due to the second author for computing Maass forms. This book is essentially self-contained, the necessary tools such as gamma and Bessel functions, Bernoulli numbers, and so on being given in a separate chapter.

These and other letters introduced Ramanujan and his remarkable theorems to the world and stimulated much research, especially in the 1920s and 1930s. This book brings together many letters to, from, and about Ramanujan. The letters came from the National Archives in Delhi, the Archives in the State of Tamil Nadu, and a variety of other sources. Helping to orient the reader is the extensive commentary, both mathematical and cultural, by Berndt and Rankin; in particular, they discuss in detail the history, up to the present day, of each mathematical result in the letters. Containing many letters that have never been published before, this book will appeal to those interested in Ramanujan's mathematics as well as those wanting to learn more about the personal side of his life. Ramanujan: Letters and Commentary was selected for the CHOICE list of Outstanding Academic Books for 1996.

Book excerpt: This volume contains the proceedings of the conference on Representation Theory and Mathematical Physics, in honor of Gregg Zuckerman's 60th birthday, held October 24-27, 2009, at Yale University. Lie groups and their representations play a fundamental role in mathematics, in particular because of connections to geometry, topology, number theory, physics, combinatorics, and many other areas. Representation theory is one of the cornerstones of the Langlands program in number theory, dating to the 1970s. Zuckerman's work on derived functors, the translation principle, and coherent continuation lie at the heart of the modern theory of representations of Lie groups. One of the major unsolved problems in representation theory is that of the unitary dual. The fact that there is, in principle, a finite algorithm for computing the unitary dual relies heavily on Zuckerman's work. In recent years there has been a fruitful interplay between mathematics and physics, in geometric representation theory, string theory, and other areas. New developments on chiral algebras, representation theory of affine Kac-Moody algebras, and the geometric Langlands correspondence are some of the focal points of this volume. Recent developments in the geometric Langlands program point to exciting connections between certain automorphic representations and dual fibrations in geometric mirror symmetry.

This book was released on 2010 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a treatment of the theory of $L$-functions developed by means of the theory of Eisenstein series and their Fourier coefficients, a theory which is usually referred to as the Langlands-Shahidi method. The information gathered from this method, when combined with the converse theorems of Cogdell and Piatetski-Shapiro, has been quite sufficient in establishing a number of new cases of Langlands functoriality conjecture; at present, some of these cases cannot be obtained by any other method. These results have led to far-reaching new estimates for Hecke eigenvalues of Maass forms, as well as definitive solutions to certain problems in analytic and algebraic number theory. This book gives a detailed treatment of important parts of this theory, including a rather complete proof of Casselman-Shalika's formula for unramified Whittaker functions as well as a general treatment of the theory of intertwining operators. It also covers in some detail the global aspects of the method as well as some of its applications to group representations and harmonic analysis. This book is addressed to graduate students and researchers who are interested in the Langlands program in automorphic forms and its connections with number theory.
