Essays on Early Eastern Eucharistic Prayer offers a guide to the exploration of the principal prayers, and presents in a simple and succinct manner the current scholarship on the origins, development, and relationship of these particular prayers to other ancient prayers. In this way Essays on Early Eastern Eucharistic Prayers produces a clear picture of the way early Eucharistic prayers emerged and grew in the Eastern Churches. Essays on Early Eastern Eucharistic Prayers serves as a companion to - and provides an extended commentary on the texts of early eastern Eucharistic prayers that are published in R. C. D. Jasper and G. J. Cuming's Prayers of the Eucharist: Early and Reformed. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are fifty-two eucharistic prayers studied in this book: the official texts of the Roman Catholic Church, the Episcopal Church in the U.S., several Lutheran Churches in North America, the United Methodist Church, and the Presbyterian Church (USA). The contributors to this volume are scholars from these church bodies who participated in the work of the Eucharistic Prayer Study Group of the North American Academy of Liturgy, an ecumenical professional society of liturgists. This book tells the story of how these prayers developed. It illustrates the way the various churches dealt with historical traditions and contemporary concerns, worship and culture, piety and theology. The essays in the second part of the book analyze the component parts of the prayers, looking at them across the ecumenical spectrum of the texts. They reveal both an impressive consensus on what should go into the eucharistic prayers, as well as many unresolved questions. The final part of the book deals with this ongoing agenda.

Book excerpt: Academy of Parish Clergy's Top Ten Books for Parish Ministry Elegant volume of liturgical prayers that tie sacrament and Word together theologically This unique, elegant resource for ministers and worship planners provides a beautifully crafted Eucharistic prayer for every Sunday of the three-year Revised Common Lectionary cycle, also including prayers for special holy days and other occasions. In a helpful introduction Samuel Wells and Abigail Kocher offer guidance on how to make the Eucharistic prayer a congregational highlight. Too often, they say, what should be the most dynamic moment of a congregation's liturgical life becomes a low-energy, low-engagement event. Closely tying the sacramental rite to the words of Scripture for the day, these theologically appropriate, pastorally fitting, and linguistically satisfying prayers change the Great Thanksgiving prayer from a lull in the liturgy to a focused, fresh, and engaged moment for the congregation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We somehow think that during the eucharistic prayer at Mass we are expected to be quiet, prayerful, and attentive-if we can be, with our children or other neighbors in the pews distracting us. In this inviting book Barry Hudock shows us that the eucharistic prayer is indeed the most dynamic and explosive" moment of Christian worship-in fact, of Christian life. Hudock takes us back to the beginnings of formal eucharistic worship in the early church, then forward to Vatican II and beyond, unpacking and exploring the eucharistic prayers old and new in words and concepts accessible to al of us. He also offers us, as the fruit of the journey, a set of points for a eucharistic prayer spirituality to prepare us for the explosion into life that is the whole purpose of our being. Barry Hudock is publisher for the parish market at Liturgical Press. He is the author of Faith Meets World: The Gift and Challenge of Catholic Social Teaching (Liguori). He received an STL in sacramental theology from The Catholic University of America. He lives with his family in Albany, Minnesota. "

He then examines the paleoanaphoras of the early centuries and moves through the origin and progressive development of the larger anaphoric families (Alexandran, Roman, Antiochene), showing the influence of the Jewish rites on the formation of the Christian texts, and arriving finally at the classical anaphoras of the fourth century.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Down in the valley, God asked the prophet Ezekiel a mighty question: 'Mortal, can these dry bones live?' (Ezekiel 37:3). Today, this question is being posed once more to those who are charged with the preparation and celebration of the Sunday liturgy--the assembly that celebrates, the ministers from within that assembly who prepare and serve, and those ordained as priests or bishops who preside. We have a come a long way since the early days of the conciliar reform of the liturgy: Assemblies respond and sing, the word is proclaimed with dignity and reverence, careful attention is given to environment and season, and all come to the communion table. Many assemblies strive to realize fully week after week the vision of the Council: that the eucharistic liturgy be seen, heard, felt, and smelt as the 'summit toward which the activity of the church is directed . . . the source from which all its power flows.' This is critical work if we are utterly convinced that 'the preeminent manifestation of the church is present in the full, active participation of all God's holy people in these liturgical celebrations.' But many still know liturgical assemblies that are but shadows of who they are called to be and celebrations are slivers of what they could be. Many stand at the brink of the valley and behold dry bones. And when we come to the eucharistic prayer, named the central prayer of the Sunday liturgy, we behold very dry bones indeed. The question is put forth: Can these dry bones live? We have come to realize that liturgy is something people do, something people live. The eucharistic prayer is more than its words: It is a way of praying and living. What lies in the ritual book must be enfleshed when we gather. We come together and breathe life into our rituals and their words. We can do this because we have first been sealed in the Spirit, the one who aids us in our weakness to pray 'that the very Spirit intercedes with sighs too deep for words' (Romans 8:26). --from Chapter 1

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eucharistic liturgy has differed through the centuries and in different Churches. Because of these differences, it is essential that eucharistic liturgy be studied from ahistorical perspective. In The Celebration of the Eucharist, Enrico Mazza offers a thorough account of the theology of the Eucharist and presents a historical analysis of the origin and variety of eucharistic liturgies and their development in the Church. Beginning with the Last Supper, Father Mazza weaves his way through interpretations elaborated by the Fathers of the Church and medieval writers to provide the rich tapestry of concepts and categories adopted by Vatican Council II. Complete with an appendix including Jewish texts and early Eucharistic Prayers, abbreviations, bibliography, and notes, The Celebration of the Eucharist is a comprehensive source for those who have an interest in the theology of the Eucharist in the course of history. Chapters are Old Testament Sacrifices and Ritual Meal," "The Origin of the Christian Eucharist," "From the Jewish Liturgy to the Christian Eucharist," "Primitive Anaphoras: From the Didache to the Mystical Eucharist," "Primitive Anaphoras: Developments of the Eucharistic Liturgy," "Thematic Developments in the Eucharistic Liturgy," "The Early Patristic Period," "Tertullian and Cyprian," "The Fourth Century," "The Early Middle Ages," "The Scholastic High Middle Ages," "The Eucharist and the Relics of the Saints," "The Reformation and the Council of Trent," "The Liturgical Reform of Vatican Council II," "The Implementation of the Liturgical Reform," "The Parts of the Eucharistic Prayer," and "The Last Supper and the Church's Eucharist." Enrico Mazza is professor of liturgical history at the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore in Milan. He is the author of Mystagogy: A Theology of Liturgy in the Patristic Ages, Eucharistic Prayers of the Roman Rite, and The Origins of the Eucharistic Prayer published by The Liturgical Press. "
