Book Synopsis EU Enlargement and Socialization by : Stefan Engert
Download or read book EU Enlargement and Socialization written by Stefan Engert and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2010-02-25 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The European Union’s enlargement has been considered a success story – apart from Cyprus and Turkey. This book looks at the EU’s expansion and examines its effectiveness in terms of international socialization and compliance, focussing specifically on the socialization of Turkey and Cyprus into the Western community. Although NATO-member Turkey submitted its membership application long before the end of the Cold War, the Kemalist state still struggles to become the first Muslim EU member state. Cyprus was allowed to join the organization in 2004, but the island remains a divided entity. Providing a comprehensive theoretical perspective, the book is divided into three parts and investigates three questions: Why expand? From an EU / international organizations perspective. Why join? From an applicants’ perspective. Why comply? Exploring why a state would choose to adapt to the EU’s fundamental norms and rules from a candidates’ perspective. Contradicting the impression that the latest round of EU enlargement has been a model story of smooth and effective socialization from top to bottom, this book will be of interest to students and scholars of the EU, European politics, international relations and particularly those interested in Turkey and Cyprus.

Book Synopsis Who's Afraid of the Big Enlargement? by : Tito Boeri
Download or read book Who's Afraid of the Big Enlargement? written by Tito Boeri and published by Centre for Economic Policy Research. This book was released on 2002 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The initial enthusiasm of many EU citizens at the 'return to Europe' of former members of the Soviet bloc has turned to anxiety at the realization of the possible adverse consequences of enlargement. Potential undesirable effects of enlargement, in particular for labour markets and social conditions, can be met by appropriately designed policies which are so far not in place or planned. Rather than legitimizing such fears, politicians and policy-makers must dispel them by leading the EU and its members to adopt these measures. Enlargement also offers the EU a window of opportunity to accelerate unavoidable reforms of structural policies, agricultural policies and their financing. These are the premises of this new CEPR Policy Paper. The authors outline the key economic and social implications of the prospective accession of the Central and East European countries into the European Union and propose policy recommendations for EU enlargement.

Book Synopsis EU enlargement, the clash of capitalisms and the European social dimension by : Paul Copeland
Download or read book EU enlargement, the clash of capitalisms and the European social dimension written by Paul Copeland and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2015-11-01 with total page 393 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the heart of the European integration process is the political economy debate over whether the EU should be a market-making project, or if it should combine this with integration in employment and social policy. What has been the impact of the 2004 and 2007 rounds of enlargement upon the political economy of European integration? EU enlargement, the clash of capitalisms and the European social dimension analyses the impact of the 2004 and 2007 enlargements upon the politics of European integration within EU employment and social policy. This book analyses the main policy negotiations in the field and analyses the political positions and contributions of the Central and Eastern European Member States. Through analyses of the negotiations of the Services Directive, the revision of the Working Time Directive and the Europe 2020 poverty target, the book argues that the addition of the Central and Eastern European states has strengthened liberal forces at the EU level and undermined integration with EU employment and social policy.

Book Synopsis Social Failures of EU Enlargement by : Guglielmo Meardi
Download or read book Social Failures of EU Enlargement written by Guglielmo Meardi and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-06-17 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is the EU enlargement the success EU institutions proclaim? Based on fifteen years of fieldwork research across Central and Eastern Europe and on migrants in the UK and Germany, this book provides a less glittering answer. The EU has betrayed hopes of social cohesion: social regulations have been forgotten, multinationals use threats of relocations, and workers, left without institutional channels to voice their concerns, have reacted by leaving their countries en masse. Yet migration, for many, increases social vulnerability. Drawing on Hirschman’s concepts of ‘Exit’ and ‘Voice’, the book traces the origins of such failures in the management of EU enlargement as a pure economic and market-creating exercise, neglecting the inherently political nature of labour relations. The reinforcement of market mechanisms without political counterbalances has resulted in an increase in opportunistic ‘exit’ behaviour by both employers and employees, and thereby in a worsening quality of democracy, at workplace, national and European levels. As a result of this process, the EU has become more similar to the North American Free Trade Agreement between USA, Canada and Mexico, where social rights are marginalized and economic integration does not translate into better development.

Download or read book The EU Enlargement Process and Social Convergence written by Arno Tausch and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The publication surveys the major existing evidence from EUROSTAT and UN/World Bank sources and comes to the depressing conclusion that there is practically no real convergence of social conditions in Europe over the last years. Instead, the gaps between East and West, and between South and North tend to be permanent. A large number of poverty indicators is analysed. The analysis bodes ill for the aims of the Union to become, by 2010, the world's leading market. The analysis is especially pessimistic for the Czech Republic, the Slovak Republic, Bulgaria and Romania. The publication surveys also the latest evidence on Roma poverty and Roma discrimination in the region.

Book Synopsis International Institutions and Socialization in Europe by : Jeffrey T. Checkel
Download or read book International Institutions and Socialization in Europe written by Jeffrey T. Checkel and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2007-02-19 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the path-breaking work of Karl Deutsch on security communities and Ernst Haas on European integration, it has been clear that international institutions may create senses of community and belonging beyond the nation state. Put differently, they can socialize. Yet the mechanisms underlying such dynamics have been unclear. This volume explores these mechanisms of international community building, from a resolutely eclectic stand point. Rationalism is thus the social theory of choice for some contributors, while others are more comfortable with social constructivism. This problem-driven perspective and the theoretical bridge building it are the cutting edge in international relations theory. By providing more fined-grained arguments on precisely how international institutions matter, such an approach sheds crucial light on the complex relationship between states and institutions, between rational choice and social constructivism, and, in our case, between Europe and the nation state.
Book Synopsis Labor, Employment, and Social Policies in the EU Enlargement Process by : Lodovico Pizzati
Download or read book Labor, Employment, and Social Policies in the EU Enlargement Process written by Lodovico Pizzati and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2002 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The process of transition to a market economy and integration into the EU has strained the labour markets of central and eastern European countries, and these developments pose a number of challenges to their social policies. This volume presents the contributions given at an international labour conference held in Austria in June 2001 to investigate these issues. It provides the latest labour trends in EU accession countries and compares them to previous experiences of European integration. It reviews existing labour market policies and social protection mechanisms, and discusses alternative strategies for employment creation in the region.
