Download or read book Torn Apart written by Francoise UGOCHUKWU and published by Adonis & Abbey Publishers Ltd. This book was released on 2010-11-30 with total page 167 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Nigerian Civil War, 1967-1970 (also known as the Biafran War) has been described as a 'forgotten war'. Yet it led to the birth of the NGO Doctors without Borders / Medecins sans frontieres and equipped journalists with the intercultural skills they later used in their coverage of other African conflicts. The Biafran conflict equally ended up strengthening the special relationship between France and Nigeria. From 1970 in particular, the Nigerian education sector was taken up with a wave of francophilia, which boosted the teaching of French in Language programmes at the secondary school level. The Civil War, which ravaged the South-Eastern part of the federation, was, above all, a collective experience which inspired poets, novelists and playwrights - Achebe, Soyinka, Okigbo, Saro-Wiwa, Okpewho, Adichie and others, while bringing about a massive religious revival which affected the whole region. The war mobilised politicians and NGOs, it changed the country and brought it into the limelight. This book reveals, through the study of oral genres, radio bulletins and the impact of the conflict on literature and the Web, the human history of the war, the role played by the media and the deep scar the conflict left on the bodies and minds of survivors.

Download or read book Euroscepticism written by Dieter Fuchs and published by Verlag Barbara Budrich. This book was released on 2009-02-18 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For some years now, European citizens and politicians have increasingly sceptical views towards the European Union. The book examines the degree of Euroscepticism in the different member states and detects possible sources for Euroscepticism. On this basis the perspectives for the further development of the European Union can be discussed. The analyses address four main issues. The first issue focuses on the question of a European identity and the relation between European and national identities. The second issue analyses euroscepticism among European citizens. The third issue refers to the construction of euroscepticism in the mass media and the fourth issue draws the connection between euroscepticism and the party systems of different European countries. As a result of these four perspectives, a differentiated view of euroscepticism can be attained and the extent and possible sources for euroscpeticism can be established. In this light, a concluding discussion on the perspectives for the development of the European Union finalises the book. From the Contents: Images of Europe and European Identity Developing Euroscepticism among European citizens The construction of Euroscepticism in the mass media Party-based Euroscepticism Discussion and perspectives
Book Synopsis Encyclopedia of Governance by : Mark Bevir
Download or read book Encyclopedia of Governance written by Mark Bevir and published by SAGE Publications. This book was released on 2006-12-13 with total page 1233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The language of governance extends to patterns of rule found throughout our daily lives. Governance also provides us with a language with which to remake our world. We might ask how to make markets, networks, international organizations, corporations, and other associations democratically accountable. We might also ask what values we want to uphold in our practices of governance. It is important for us to address these questions because, by doing so, we make the future. The Encyclopedia of Governance provides a one-stop point of reference for the diverse and complex topics surrounding governance for the period between the collapse of the post-war consensus and the rise of neoliberal regimes in the 1970s. This comprehensive resource concentrates primarily on topics related to the changing nature and role of the state in recent times and the ways in which these roles have been conceptualized in the areas of Political Science, Public Administration, Political Economy, and Sociology. Key Features: Presents a determinedly global scope through approximately 550 entries written by international contributors that explicitly address global, regional, and transnational topics; cover theories and concepts that are debated globally; highlight similarities and differences around the world; and offer examples from diverse regions and countries Examines the changes in the state associated with the transfer of powers, rights, and functions to organizations within civil society as well as the rise of new types of regional and international linkages and problems Explores how the state has become both increasingly dependent on organizations in civil society and increasingly constrained by international linkages Avoids the jargon that characterizes most writing in the field and translates this language into a more familiar and commonsense vocabulary so as to make it intelligible to a wider audience Offers comprehensive coverage of topics including policy analysis, public sector management, sociological theory, economic governance, democratic theory, security, and global governance The Encyclopedia of Governance offers new insights into the global community of which we are all part, making it a must-have resource for any academic library.
Book Synopsis Policy Analysis in France by : Charlotte Halpern
Download or read book Policy Analysis in France written by Charlotte Halpern and published by Policy Press. This book was released on 2018-01-03 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Understanding policy analysis in France requires first a thorough exploration of the distinction usually made in French academic and practitioner debates between policy studies and policy analysis--essentially the difference between studies of policy and studies designed for the use of policy. This book begins there, then delves into questions of how and by whom knowledge of policies is produced within and outside the French state, showing that while the tension between the two types of study is real, the continued exchange of ideas between them has led to an enrichment of both spheres. The book thus lays the foundation for a more systematic understanding of policy analysis in France.

Book Synopsis Learning Gender after the Cold War by : Ioana Cîrstocea
Download or read book Learning Gender after the Cold War written by Ioana Cîrstocea and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-09-20 with total page 419 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the role and place of feminist politics in the transformation of the former socialist world and points out the geopolitical mechanisms involved in the deployment of technocratic norms, expert discourses, activist repertoires and academic knowledge on women’s rights and gender equality in the 1990s-2000s. Based on an interdisciplinary approach and scrutinizing transnational flows of people, resources and ideas, the analysis brings together themes and spaces that have been disconnected in previous scholarship. It sheds light on the integration of feminist resources into contemporary governance through complex entanglements of international aid to democratization, “activism beyond borders” and systemic transformation of higher education. The book will be of interest to researchers and students of sociology, political science, gender studies, and East-European studies.
