Specific interactions are involved in transient diastereoisomeric contact pairs. Supersonic jet expansion allows the stabilisation in gas phase of these weakly bonded systems. Laser spectroscopy (Laser Induced Fluorescence and double resonance IR-UV spectroscopy) combined with Density Functional calculations are employed to characterise these systems and to study, at the molecular level, the forces involved in the chiral recognition. The experiments consist in the complexation of a chiral fluorescent chromophore ((R/S)-2-naphtyl-1-ethanol) with different sort of solvent. The interactions at play in diastereoisomers induce a different stabilisation of the excited and fundamental states relatively to the bare chromophore. Specific shifts of the electronic and vibrational transitions are used to characterise the systems. In the first part of this work, we study simple systems made of the chromophore and one or two molecules of methanol or water. The second part deals with bifunctional (amino-alcools and hydroxy-esters) chiral molecules. We show the diversity of the observed structures and the role of the hydrogen bonds in the enantiospecificity. The complexes with amino-alcools, show a pronounced enantioselectivity in the formation of the hydrogen bond (OHN or OHO). In the case of complexes with hydroxy-esters, chiral discrimination takes place at a stoechiometric level.
