This book was released on 2004-10-21 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the quest for higher data density in information technology manipulation of magnetization by other means than magnetic fields has become an important challenge. This lead to a startling revival of the magnetoelectric effect, which characterizes induction of a polarization by a magnetic field or of a magnetization by an electric field. The magnetoelectric crosslink of material properties opens just those degrees of freedom which are needed for the mutual control of magnetic and electric states. The book gives a state-of-the-art review on magnetoelectrics research, classifies current research tendencies, and points out possible future trends. Novel compounds and growth techniques and new theoretical concepts for the understanding of magnetoelectric coupling phenomena are introduced. Highlights are the discovery of "gigantic" magnetoelectric effects which are strong enough to trigger electric or magnetic phase transitions; the concept of magnetochirality; and development "structural" magnetoelectric effects in artificial multiphase compounds. The book is addressed to condensed-matter physicists with a particular focus on experts in highly correlated systems.

Book Synopsis Neutron Capture Gamma-Ray Spectroscopy by : R. E. Chrien
Download or read book Neutron Capture Gamma-Ray Spectroscopy written by R. E. Chrien and published by Springer. This book was released on 2011-12-29 with total page 880 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The post World War II era witnessed a tremendous growth in the research carried out in neutron-induced reactions and especially in neutron capture y-ray studies. This growth was stimulated by the availability of neutron sources, such as reactors and accelerators, and by the development of high resolution y-ray and conversion electron detectors. Today the combination of high flux reactors and precise instrumentation has produced spectral data of exceptional quality, as the pages of these proceedings illustrate. The world-wide community of the practioners of the art of cap ture y-ray spectroscopy has met three times in the last decade: the first international symposium on this subject was held at Studsvik, Sweden in 1969, and the second at Petten, The Netherlands in 1974. A smaller meeting, of mostly u. S. and some European parti cipation, was held at Argonne National Laboratory in 1966. A perusal of the proceedings of these meetings shows the striking ad vances in this now mature field of physics over the last dozen years. Each meeting has seen a small but perceptible increase in the number of papers presented and the number of laboratories repre sented. More importantly, each meeting has documented the increasing impact of (n,y) reasearch, not only on other areas of basic physics, but also on commercial and medical applications of this technology. A total of 29 invited papers and 97 contributed papers were presented at this symposium.

Download or read book Matrix Isolation Spectroscopy written by A. Barnes and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 602 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The matrix isolation (MI) method has now been used for nearly thirty years. During this period it has been actively developed and the range of problems tackled greatly extended. Originally it was used for studies of transient species involv ing vibrational, electronic and ESR spectroscopy. Nowadays the study of transient species forms a comparatively small part of HI work since it has been amply demonstrated that very fruitful information can be obtained of the structure and interactions of stable molecules and their aggregates. In addition to the s~ectroscopic methods mentioned above the MI technique is nowadays a standard method in research based on vibrational relaxation, luminescence, Mossbauer, magnetic circular dichroism, pulsed NMR and photoelectron spectroscopy. The matrix isolation technique affords considerable advantages over more conventional methods in most applications of spectroscopy. Areas where the technique has been widely applied, or shows great potential, include: metal atom chemistry, and its relation to surface chemistry, high temperature inorganic species, transition metal complexes, interstellar species, free radicals and unstable molecules, conformational studies, molecular com plexes, and intermolecular forces.

Download or read book Advances in Magnetic Resonance written by Warren S. Warren and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advances in Magnetic Resonance: The Waugh Symposium, Volume 14 is a collection of manuscripts presented at the 1989 symposium on "High Resolution NMR in Solids, held at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The contributors provide 20- to 30-page articles consistent with AMR's traditional emphasis on quantitative analysis of NMR techniques. Organized into 13 chapters, this book discusses the principles triple-quantum filtered two-dimensional exchange spectroscopy and its application in the measurement of cross correlation between pairs of dipole-dipole interactions. It then describes alternative ways of using fictitious spin in pulsed nuclear quadrupole resonance or NMR. General topics on the application of optical spectroscopy; the saturation of spin-spin energy by slow continuous bulk rotation; the frequency-switched Lee-Goldburg pulse cycle; and high-resolution proton NMR in solid systems are also explored. A chapter examines an entirely different view of spin dynamics in the presence of radio-frequency fields. This book also deals with the theoretical background and application of solid-state and zero-field NMR spectroscopies to structure determination. Lastly, the utilization of the Floquet formalism in the design of broadband propagators in two-level systems and the two classes of novel NMR phenomena related to the symmetrization postulate are discussed. Analytical and quantum chemists, physicists, biochemists, and materials science researchers will find this book invaluable.
Book Synopsis Dynamics of Disordered Materials by : Dieter Richter
Download or read book Dynamics of Disordered Materials written by Dieter Richter and published by Springer. This book was released on 1989 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains the proceedings of a workshop held at the Institute Laue-Langevin in Grenoble in September 1988. Review articles and contributed papers survey recent theoretical and experimental developments on disordered materials and in particular on glasses. A large part of the book concerns the recently proposed mode-coupling approach to the behaviour of a viscous liquid around its glass transition, where the relevant dynamics extend over a broad range in time scales and the application of quite different experimental techniques becomes essential. Contributions report on experiments using dielectric relaxation, NMR or light scattering techniques, and especially neutron scattering techniques. One signature of disordered materials is the occurrence of an excess vibrational density of states at low frequencies. Some situations are presented where the density of states can be understood by taking into account the peculiarities of intra- and intermolecular motions. Another approach to the dynamics of disordered materials is the fracton picture, developed to describe the excitations of fractal objects. Several contributions discuss the dynamics of such fractals, studying mainly the vibrational density of states, and some discuss the application of the fracton concept to materials without a fractal structure like glasses.
Book Synopsis De l’atome au matériau. Les phénomènes quantiques collectifs by : Antoine Georges, Collège de France

This book was released on 2010-11-03 with total page 35 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
