This IUTAM Symposium, organized by the Institut de Recherche sur les Phenomenes Hors Equilibre (Marseille), is the logical continuation of the meetings previously organized or co-organized - on the French or European level, such as Euromech 237, Marseille, 1988 - by the same research group ofMarseille. This meeting focused specifically on the structure of turbulent flows in which density varies strongly : the effect of this variation on the velocity and scalar fields is in no sense negligible. We were mainly concerned with low-speed flows subjected to strong local changes of density as a consequence of heat or mass transfer or of chemical reactions. Compressible turbulent flows - such a!" supersonic ones - were also considered in order to underline their similarities to and their differences from low-speed variable density flows.

Book excerpt: Les études numériques d'une couche de mélange et d'une marche descendante bi-dimensionnelles sont réalisées avec la méthode semi-déterministe afin d'étudier les comportements des instabilités convectives, ainsi que les mouvements cohérent, incohérent et cohérent instationnaire dans celles-ci. Dans un premier temps, nous validons notre code de calcul en calculant des couches de mélange non-visqueuses ou visqueuses ayant un profil de vitesse en tangente hyperbolique. Les résultats sont compares aux travaux de Michalke. Ensuite, nous étudions le rapport entre le profil de vitesse initial et la fréquence la plus amplifiée induisant les structures cohérentes dans une couche de mélange visqueuse. Les interactions non linéaires des structures sont également analysées. Ayant des résultats dans les couches de mélange visqueuses, nous continuons de calculer les mêmes configurations avec la méthode semi-déterministe en prenant un modèle de turbulence à deux équations (k-epsilon). Les influences de la turbulence sur les instabilités convectives sont examinées à travers des comparaisons de ces deux types d'écoulement. De plus, les mouvements cohérent, incohérent, cohérent instationnaire et les transferts énergétiques entre eux sont étudiés respectivement. Dans la dernière partie, la méthode semi-déterministe est appliquée dans la marche descendante de Driver et al. Les instabilités et les structures cohérentes sous influence de la zone de recirculation sont analysées.
