Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Both of the authors of this book are disciples and collaborators of the Brussels school of thermodynamics. Their particular domain of competence is the application of numerical methods to the many highly nonlinear problems which have arisen in the context of recent developments in the thermodynamics of irreversi ble processes: stability of states far from equilibrium, search for marginal critical states, bifwrcation phenomena, multiple stationnary states, dissipative structures, etc. These problems cannot in general be handled using only the clas sical and mathematically rigorous methods of the theory of differential, partial differential, and int~grodifferential equations. The present authors demonstrate how approximate methods, re lyi ng usually on powerful computers, lead to significant progress in these areas, if one is prepa red to accept a certain lack of rigor, such as, for example, the lack of proof for the convergence of the series used in the context of problems which are not self adjoint, nor even linear. The results thus obtained must consequently be submit ted to an exacting confrontation with experimental observations. - Even though, the '1 imited information obtained concerning the, often unsuspec ted, mechanisms underlying the observed phenomena is both precious and frequently sufficient. This information results from the properties of the trial functions best suited to the constraints of the problem such as the initial, boundary, and "feedback" conditions, and the analysis of their behavior in the course of the evolution of the system.

Book excerpt: The world’s ever-increasing need for fresh water has led to the use of non-conventional sources such as rain and fog water collection. Although rain water collection is relatively simple, the supply is often erratic. Passive fog water collection has been used in several parts of the world but is only relevant to certain geographical locations. Dew occurrence, however, is far more widespread, can form in most climates and geographic settings, show high frequency and prevalence throughout the year. During the past 20 years, dew collection has therefore been investigated as a serious supplemental source of fresh water. Dew Water offers a thorough review of dew, its formation characteristics and potential for dew collection, for audiences that include policy-makers, non-governmental organizations involved in development aid and sustainable development, engineers, urban planners, researchers and students. After providing a background on atmospheric water, humid air, and sky and materials emissivity, the book deals with dew formation and its estimation with a focus on the use of meteorological data. Dew measurement techniques are reviewed and discussed as well as dew collection by passive means. Computational fluid dynamics technique is described for better design of dew collectors. Dew quality (chemistry, biology) is assessed in view of potable water quality. Costs and economic aspects are also considered.

Book excerpt: In the quest for higher data density in information technology manipulation of magnetization by other means than magnetic fields has become an important challenge. This lead to a startling revival of the magnetoelectric effect, which characterizes induction of a polarization by a magnetic field or of a magnetization by an electric field. The magnetoelectric crosslink of material properties opens just those degrees of freedom which are needed for the mutual control of magnetic and electric states. The book gives a state-of-the-art review on magnetoelectrics research, classifies current research tendencies, and points out possible future trends. Novel compounds and growth techniques and new theoretical concepts for the understanding of magnetoelectric coupling phenomena are introduced. Highlights are the discovery of "gigantic" magnetoelectric effects which are strong enough to trigger electric or magnetic phase transitions; the concept of magnetochirality; and development "structural" magnetoelectric effects in artificial multiphase compounds. The book is addressed to condensed-matter physicists with a particular focus on experts in highly correlated systems.

Book excerpt: In 1969 the U.S. Air Force issued a statement that read' "No UFO reported, investigated and evaluated by the Air Force was ever an indication of threat to our national security." This statement is patently false. It has been proven untrue by the testimony of many military officers and airmen and documentation of incidents involving UFOs and nuclear weapons, testimonies of which the U.S. Air Force was fully aware. Unidentified details many of these testimonies, some for the first time. As partial justification for its position, the Air Force cites a University of Colorado study that was contracted and paid for by federal funds. Unidentified reveals how this study was actually just another part of the plan to cover up the reality of the UFO phenomenon. For the first time, Unidentified publishes evidence that the investigators for the Colorado study knew about the UFO-related missile shutdown incidents but did not investigate them or include them in their final report.

Book excerpt: "The field of metamaterials arose from a deeper understanding of how electromagnetic waves interact with materials and subwavelength-scaled scattering structures. This opened up the field of metamaterials or engineered materials through advances in understanding how material properties not found in nature could be designed along with advances in fabrication capabilities. Metamaterial advances span the electromagnetic spectrum, with examples being more common at lower (e.g., microwave) frequencies. The microwave or x-band regime has proven to be a good testbed for the first generation of metamaterials, but recently we have seen optical and IR metamaterials emerging as well. The exploitation of these more complex material-wave interactions, based on arrangements of subwavelength scale components, has generated a lot of global activity. We can, in principle, engineer material properties to greatly extend those currently available. This tutorial text presents both the usual and unusual electromagnetic properties of materials, focusing especially man-made or engineered metamaterials. After a review of Maxwell's equations and material properties, the idea of resonant meta-atoms and composite media are introduced. The fabrication of metamaterials and the properties of negative index materials are explained. The difficulties associated with reducing the size of meta-atoms for use at optical frequencies are described, and the use of metamaterials for superresolution imaging is presented in some detail"--
