La maquette froide est principalement constituée d'un riser de 5 m de haut relié à une jambe en L par une conduite horizontale appelée pont. Le diamètre de la jambe en L, du riser et du pont est égal à 0,0216 m. La jambe en L est formée d'une conduite horizontale de 0,40m, d'un coude et d'une conduite verticale de longueur modulable (0,83 ou 2,83 m). De l'air et du sable de trois granulométries distinctes (395, 315 et 145 micromètres) sont utilisés. La carte des pressions de la boucle, la vitesse des particules dans le riser et le flux de solide sont respectivement déterminés grâce à des prises de pression pariétales, un capteur capacitif, et une vanne trois voies permettant de détourner l'écoulement. L'étude hydrodynamique met en évidence divers phénomènes. Trois régimes d'écoulement peuvent exister dans la jambe en L, et donc plusieurs évolutions de la porosité sont possibles. Le flux de solide dépend du débit de gaz passant dans la jambe horizontale, du diamètre moyen des particules et du rapport des longueurs des deux conduites formant la jambe en L. le rapport entre vitesse de glissement et vitesse terminale de chute d'une particule isolée augmente avec la vitesse superficielle du gaz dans le riser. La perte de charge par frottement solide/paroi constitue une part importante des pertes de charge totales du pont et du riser, et présente des comportements différents suivant la valeur de la vitesse du gaz de transport. Sur la base des résultats expérimentaux, des corrélations sont établies. Elles sont ensuite utilisées pour élaborer un modèle complet du lit circulant, reposant sur l'équilibre des pertes de charge dans la boucle. Ce modèle est vérifié sur les essais réalisés dans la thèse. Il est en partie validé à l'aide de données issues d'une étude antérieure sur la même installation munie d'une jambe en L de géométrie différente (conduite horizontale de 1 m).
