La prise de conscience des enjeux engendrés par le risque de corrosion a contribué au développement de la protection cathodique des ouvrages en béton armé afin de prévenir les risques associés ou prolonger la durée de vie des structures corrodées. Cependant, la conception de ces systèmes s'appuie sur des règles empiriques simples essentiellement basées sur un retour d'expérience issu d'autres environnements (terre, mer). Or, ces règles ne sont pas réellement étayées par une description physique détaillée des phénomènes mis en jeu.De nombreuses dispositions de conception telles que l'emplacement du système anodique sur la structure, sa zone d'influence, ou la surface d'acier supposée être protégée sont choisies de manière empirique. L'impact de l'environnement - en particulier des conditions climatiques - n'est pas intégré au dimensionnement. Par conséquent, l'approche actuelle de la conception de la protection cathodique ne permet pas une optimisation efficace du système. En effet, le béton armé est un matériau composite hétérogène multi-phases et les ouvrages construits à partir de ce matériau présentent des géométries très variées. La spatialité et les propriétés physiques de ces systèmes varient donc de manière importante : chaque structure est unique. Le dimensionnement des systèmes de protection cathodique représente alors un véritable problème en 3D.Dans ce contexte, une conception assistée par ordinateur (CAO) des systèmes de PC, basée sur la modélisation numérique 3D, est nécessaire pour prendre en compte les paramètres influents prédominants et proposer une offre de dimensionnement adaptatif et robuste. L'intégration des spécificités des ouvrages dans les simulations numériques nécessite plusieurs données d'entrée, dont la nature, les méthodes d'acquisition et l'implémentation sont présentées dans ce document. En particulier, l'impact de la température et du degré de saturation sur la cinétique de corrosion et de protection cathodique sont étudiés. Une revue des systèmes de protection cathodique usuels est réalisée, accompagnée d'une étude expérimentale en laboratoire destinée à mesurer leur comportement électrochimique.Afin d'illustrer l'apport effectif de la modélisation 3D dans le processus de conception de la protection cathodique, une étude de cas est proposée concernant une maquette à taille réelle, en l'occurrence un mur en béton armé de huit mètres carrés équipé d'un système de protection cathodique par courant galvanique surfacique. La structure, spécifiquement conçue pour cette étude, dispose d'une instrumentation électrochimique et climatique. Les données collectées sur site sont complétées par des analyses en laboratoire afin d'alimenter le modèle de calcul. Le modèle numérique ainsi construit, qualifié de jumeau numérique, permet d'évaluer le comportement du système de protection et d'étudier l'influence de l'environnement sur les phénomènes physiques à l'œuvre.La thèse apporte ainsi une contribution utile à l'adaptation de la conception des systèmes de protection cathodique de l'acier dans le béton armé. L'approche n'est pas seulement théorique puisque les lois gouvernant les phénomènes de corrosion et de protection cathodique sont implémentables dans un code de calcul par éléments finis multiphysique. Le bienfondé́ de la démarche est éprouvé́ par des études de cas réels et numériques et des expérimentations de laboratoire.

Book excerpt: Les objectifs de la thèse sont d’étudier l’influence de la pré-fissuration sur le développement de la corrosion des armatures du béton armé, les corrélations entre les pertes de section d’armatures dues à la corrosion et la fissuration du béton d’enrobage en résultant et l'effet de la corrosion sur les propriétés mécaniques des structures en béton armé soumis à un environnement salin. Les essais ont été réalisées pour étudier les différentes propriétés mécaniques comme la résistance à la flexion, la résistance au cisaillement, etc. Le travail expérimental est constitué de deux parties: dans la première partie des petits échantillons annulaires en mortier ont été testés afin d'observer l'effet des fissures sur la corrosion. Les résultats montrent que quelque soit l’ouverture des fissures, la corrosion démarre en fond de fissure et se propage le long de l’interface acier-béton endommagée en fond de fissure par la création de la fissure. Dans la deuxième partie, une étude approfondie a été réalisée sur une poutre en béton armé qui a été corrodée dans un environnement salin pendant 26 ans et une poutre non corrodée de même âge pour mieux comprendre l'effet de la corrosion sur les propriétés mécaniques (flexion, cisaillement , propriétés mécaniques de l’acier corrodé) d’éléments en béton armé. Nous nous sommes focalisé sur la dépassivation et l'initiation effective. Une large campagne expérimentale a permis de comprendre l'incidence des conditions d'exposition, de la nature des ciments utilisés dans les bétons et des conditions de carbonatation de l'enrobage, sur la dépassivation des armatures et le démarrage effectif de la corrosion. Au total 27 configurations ont été étudiées. Le potentiel libre de corrosion et la résistance de polarisation ont été mesurés au cours de l'expérimentation sur une durée voisine d'une année. Parallèlement, à échéances régulières, les coefficients de Tafel et la masse de produits de corrosion ont été également mesurés. L'ensemble des données a été analysé pour conduire, à partir du calcul des probabilités de bonne ou de mauvaise alarme, aux seuils de détection du démarrage effectif de la corrosion associés aux paramètres électrochimiques ainsi que la masse seuil de produits de corrosion correspondant à cette détection. Alimentée par les résultats des essais de caractérisation des bétons, une simulation numérique par éléments finis du démarrage de la corrosion a été développée permettant de corroborer de façon satisfaisant les résultats expérimentaux.
