Book excerpt: UNE LIGNE DE PROPAGATION NON LINEAIRE EST UNE LIGNE DE TRANSMISSION COPLANAIRE PASSIVE ET LINEAIRE, PERIODIQUEMENT CHARGEE PAR DES ELEMENTS NON LINEAIRES (DES DIODES SCHOTTKY ICI). LA CAPACITE INVERSE DU CONTACT SCHOTTKY VARIANT AVEC LA TENSION, LA VITESSE DE PROPAGATION D'UN SIGNAL LE LONG D'UNE TELLE LIGNE DEPEND EGALEMENT DE SON AMPLITUDE. AINSI PLUS L'AMPLITUDE D'UN SIGNAL EST GRANDE PLUS LA VITESSE DE PROPAGATION L'EST EGALEMENT : LES FORTES AMPLITUDES SE PROPAGENT DONC PLUS VITE QUE LES FAIBLES AMPLITUDES. CE TRAVAIL A CONSISTE A DEVELOPPER UNE METHODE PERMETTANT LA SYNTHESE DE LIGNES DE PROPAGATION NON LINEAIRES OPTIMISEES EN TERMES DE PERFORMANCES POUR LA GENERATION D'ONDES DE CHOC. LA DETERMINATION DES PARAMETRES DES SECTIONS DE LIGNES DE PROPAGATION LINEAIRES, DES DIODES SCHOTTKY UTILISEES EN VARACTOR AINSI QUE LE NOMBRE DE SECTIONS NECESSAIRES EST EFFECTUE DE FACON SYSTEMATIQUE, EN FONCTION DU TYPE D'EXCITATION ET DU SIGNAL A OBTENIR EN SORTIE DU DISPOSITIF. NOUS AVONS TRAVAILLE EGALEMENT SUR LE PROBLEME DE LA SIMULATION DE L'EFFET DE PEAU ET DE LA DISPERSION MODALE DANS LE DOMAINE TEMPOREL DU FAIT DE L'IMPACT IMPORTANT DE CES DEUX PHENOMENES SUR L'EFFICACITE DE COMPRESSION DES LIGNES DE TRANSMISSION NON LINEAIRES. NOUS AVONS DEVELOPPE UNE METHODE PERMETTANT DE PRENDRE EN COMPTE LES PERTES PAR EFFET DE PEAU ET PAR RAYONNEMENT, AINSI QUE LA DISPERSION, DANS LES SIMULATIONS TEMPORELLES SOUS SPICE. CELA NOUS A PERMIS DE MONTRER DE FACON QUANTITATIVE L'INCIDENCE DES PERTES ET DE LA DISPERSION. NOUS AVONS AUSSI CONCU, REALISE ET TESTE UNE LIGNE DE TRANSMISSION NON LINEAIRE HYBRIDE FONCTIONNANT DANS LA BANDE S. LES RESULTATS DE MESURE DANS LE DOMAINE TEMPOREL MONTRENT QUE LA SINUSOIDE D'ENTREE EST FORTEMENT COMPRIMEE (365 PS 145 PS). DANS LE DOMAINE FREQUENTIEL, ON CONSTATE UNE GENERATION D'HARMONIQUES AVEC UNE TRES BONNE EFFICACITE DE CONVERSION (32% POUR L'HARMONIQUE DE RANG 2).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Organic lasers are broadly tunable coherent sources, potentially compact, convenient and manufactured at low-costs. Appeared in the mid 60’s as solid-state alternatives for liquid dye lasers, they recently gained a new dimension after the demonstration of organic semiconductor lasers in the 90's. More recently, new perspectives appeared at the nanoscale, with organic polariton and surface plasmon lasers. After a brief reminder to laser physics, a first chapter exposes what makes organic solid-state organic lasers specific. The laser architectures used in organic lasers are then reviewed, with a state-of-the-art review of the performances of devices with regard to output power, threshold, lifetime, beam quality etc. A survey of the recent trends in the field is given, highlighting the latest developments with a special focus on the challenges remaining for achieving direct electrical pumping of organic semiconductor lasers. A last chapter covers the applications of organic solid-state lasers.

Book excerpt: The result of years of work by scholars from all over the world, The UNESCO General History of Africa reflects how the different peoples of Africa view their civilizations and shows the historical relationships between the various parts of the continent. Historical connections with other continents demonstrate Africa's contribution to the development of human civilization. Each volume is lavishly illustrated and contains a comprehensive bibliography. This fifth volume of the acclaimed series covers the history of the continent from the beginning of the sixteenth century to the close of the eighteenth century in which two themes emerge: first, the continuing internal evolution of the states and cultures of Africa during this period second, the increasing involvement of Africa in external trade--with major but unforeseen consequences for the whole world. In North Africa, we see the Ottomans conquer Egypt. South of the Sahara, some of the larger, older states collapse, and new power bases emerge. Traditional religions continue to coexist with both Christianity (suffering setbacks) and Islam (in the ascendancy). Along the coast, particularly of West Africa, Europeans establish a trading network which, with the development of New World plantation agriculture, becomes the focus of the international slave trade. The immediate consequences of this trade for Africa are explored, and it is argued that the long-term global consequences include the foundation of the present world-economy with all its built-in inequalities.

Book excerpt: The STICS crop model has been developed since 1996 at INRA in collaboration with other research and technical institutes. The model syntheses, illustrates and concretizes an important part of the French agronomic knowledge as a point of view on the field and cropping systems working. The formalisations of the STICS crop model presented in this book can be considered as references used in the framework of crop sciences. The book arrangement relies on the way the model designs the crop-soil system functioning, each chapter being devoted to a set of important functions such as growth initiation, yield onset, water uptake, transformation of organic matter etc. One chapter deals with the cropping system and long term simulations and the final chapter is about the involvement of the user in terms of option choices and parameterization. If this book is mainly intended for scientists who use the STICS model, it can also be useful for agronomists, crop modellers, students and technicians looking for elementary formalizations of the crop-soil system functioning.

Book excerpt: The contributions of this volume approach the genres of employee, CEO and organizational communication from different angles. They analyze how the author's position in the company influences the construction of these genres, what content and linguistic style characterize them, and how the discourse of these genres is related to other resources. They look at linguistic and rhetorical strategies in a range of communicative settings: email correspondence among (male versus female) co-workers, collaborative writing of formats in the workplace, leadership messaging by the CEO, financial disclosures for (non-)financial audiences and expressions of the corporate philosophy. Two methodologies in particular are prominent in the genre-based chapters: corpus analyses and case studies.

This book was released on 2004 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
