Book excerpt: LES PRINCIPAUX PHENOMENES PHYSIQUES ET CHIMIQUES, INTERVENANT ENTRE LES ARMATURES CORRODEES ET LE BETON QUI LES ENROBE, SONT ETUDIES SUR UN MODELE EXPERIMENTAL ASSOCIANT ACIER CORRODE ET PATE DE CIMENT ET SUR DES MELANGES SIMPLES ENTRE LES PRODUITS DE CORROSION DE L'ACIER ET LES COMPOSANTS DU CIMENT. LA COUCHE DES PRODUITS DE CORROSION SUR L'ACIER, EN RAISON DE SON IMPORTANCE POROSITE OUVERTE, ABSORBE PAR CAPILLARITE UNE FRACTION DE L'EAU DE LA PATE FRAICHE PROVOQUANT LA PERTURBATION DE L'HYDRATATION DU CIMENT DANS UNE EPAISSEUR TROIS FOIS PLUS IMPORTANTE QUE CELLE DE LA COUCHE DE CORROSION SUR L'ACIER. L'ABSORPTION D'EAU S'ACCOMPAGNE PAR UN DEGAGEMENT DE L'AIR OCCLUS DANS LA COUCHE DE CORROSION FORMANT DES VIDES A LA LIMITE DE PRESENCE DE LA PATE ET CREANT, AINSI, UNE ZONE DE FAIBLE RESISTANCE ENTRE L'ACIER ET LA PATE. DES LES PREMIERS JOURS DE CURE, LES PRODUITS DE CORROSION DE L'ACIER REAGISSENT AVEC L'HYDROXYDE DE CALCIUM ET L'EAU DE LA PATE POUR FORMER UN FERRITE DE CALCIUM HYDRATE HEXAGONAL ET UN FERRITE DE CALCIUM HYDRATE CUBIQUE. LA PRESENCE D'IONS CARBONATES OU CHLORURES ACCELERE LES REACTIONS PRECEDENTES ET CONDUIT A LA FORMATION DE CARBOFERRITE DE CALCIUM HYDRATE OU DE SOLUTIONS SOLIDES ENTRE FERRITE ET CHLOROFERRITE DE CALCIUM HYDRATE. EN PRESENCE D'IONS SULFATES, LE MONOSULFOFERRITE ET LE TRISULFOFERRITE DE CALCIUM HYDRATE SE FORMENT. LA CRISTALLISATION DE CES PRODUITS DANS LA ZONE DE TRANSITION ENTRE L'ACIER CORRODE ET LA PATE DE CIMENT SE TRADUIT PAR UNE AMELIORATION LOCALE DES PROPRIETES MECANIQUES DE LA LIAISON

LE MODELE EXPERIMENTAL EST UNE EPROUVETTE MIXTE CONSTITUEE DE DEUX MATRICES DE MORTIER SEPAREES PAR UNE PLAQUE D'ACIER, A L'ETAT DE SURFACE MAITRISE. L'INCLINAISON DE LA PLAQUE PAR RAPPORT A L'AXE LONGITUDINAL DE L'EPROUVETTE MIXTE EST VARIABLE, CE QUI PERMET D'OBTENIR, AVEC UN EFFORT AXIAL IMPOSE, PLUSIEURS COMBINAISONS DE CONTRAINTES NORMALES ET TANGENTIELLES DANS LA ZONE DE CONTACT ACIER BETON. LA PREMIERE PARTIE DE CE TRAVAIL EST CONSACREE D'UNE PART A L'ETUDE THEORIQUE DU CHAMP DES CONTRAINTES A L'INTERFACE DU MODELE PROPOSE, ET D'AUTRE PART A UNE VERIFICATION EXPERIMENTALE EFFECTUEE SUR UNE EPROUVETTE INSTRUMENTEE PAR DES JAUGES DE DEFORMATIONS. DANS LA SECONDE PARTIE LE MODELE EXPERIMENTAL EST UTILISE POUR SUIVRE L'EVOLUTION DE LA LIAISON ACIER-BETON D'EPROUVETTES COMPORTANT DES PLAQUES METALLIQUES PRESENTANT DIVERS ETATS DE SURFACE. APRES RUPTURE L'INTERFACE METAL BETON EST ANALYSEE PAR DIFFRACTOMETRIE DES RAYONS X, PAR MICROSONDE ELECTRONIQUE, ET OBSERVEE PAR MICROSCOPE ELECTRONIQUE A BALAYAGE. LES RESULTATS OBTENUS MONTRENT QUE L'ETAT DE SURFACE DE LA PLAQUE ET LA FORMATION DES COMPOSES D'INTERACTION, LORSQUE LE METAL REAGIT AVEC LE CIMENT, SE TRADUISENT PAR UNE MODIFICATION DE LA RESISTANCE MECANIQUE DE LA LIAISON. LA MEME PROCEDURE EST APPLIQUEE A DES EPROUVETTES SOUMISES PENDANT UN TEMPS SIGNIFICATIF A UNE ACTION COUPLEE MECANIQUE ET CHIMIQUE. LES PREMIERS RESULTATS MONTRENT QU'A LONG TERME LA LIAISON POURRAIT ETRE ALTEREE

Book excerpt: Digital fabrication has been termed the “third industrial revolution”, and is promising to revolutionize many disciplines, including most recently the construction sector. Both academia and industry see immense promise in cementitious materials, which lend themselves well to additive manufacturing techniques for digital fabrication in construction. With this recent trend and high interest in this new research field, the 1st RILEM International Conference on Concrete and Digital Fabrication (Digital Concrete 2018) was organized. Since 2014, ETH Zurich has been host for the Swiss National Centre for Competence in Research (NCCR) for Digital Fabrication in Architecture, which is highly interdisciplinary and unique worldwide. In 2018, this NCCR opened the “DFAB House”, which incorporates many digital fabrication principles for architecture. It is also responsible for the 600 m2 Robotic Fabrication Lab and the first robotically built roof in the world. Held in tandem with Rob|Arch 2018, the leading conference for robotics in architecture, RILEM deemed it the right time to combine forces at this new conference, which will be the first large conference to feature the work of the recently created RILEM Technical Committee on Digital Fabrication with Cement-based Materials, among other leaders in this new field worldwide. This conference proceedings brings together papers that take into account the findings in this new area. Papers reflect the varying themes of the conference, including Materials, Processing, Structure, and Applications.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I am pleased to present a work which marks a milestone in the history of public works and, more precisely, in that of permanent structures—a comprehensive dictionary of Civil Engineering terms. Since the beginning of time, Man has always tried to find a means to clear the obstacles which nature erected to displace him. With the first tree trunk thrown across a river, man sought to improve the crossing structure. After the invention of the wheel, and to satisfy his thirst for conquest (Roman ways), and comfort (aqueducts), man built bridges that became a preremptory necessity to move quickly. Thus, Man started to build wooden and masonry works. With the passing centuries, the builders became masters in the art of building masonry works. Then came the Industrial Revolution and the advent of the steel (1864), which was closely followed by the invention of the reinforced concrete (1855). The need for railways and improving the road network inspired great works of crossing such as viaducts and tunnels. The boom of the railway network and the development of the car required the construction of an increasing number of new structures. This phenomenon continues today with hundreds of structures built each year throughout the world.

Book excerpt: Poor durability of concrete is a major cause of problems in modern building and civil engineering structures in all countries: the annual cost of investigating and repairing deteriorating reinforced concrete structures runs into many millions of pounds. This book explains the fundamentals of the corrosion of steel in concrete. It is comprehensive and provides a basis for the practising engineer to design concrete structures which avoid the problem using modern concepts and specifications. A limited discussion of corrosion measurement and repairs is also provided.
