Book excerpt: ON S'INTERESSE DANS CE TRAVAIL A DES MECANISMES ELEMENTAIRES DE LA PLASTICITE, TELS QUE LA DISSOCIATION D'UNE DISLOCATION PARFAITE EN PARTIELLES DE SHOCKLEY OU L'ANNIHILATION DE DIPOLES, AINSI QU'A L'INTERACTION ENTRE UNE DISLOCATION ET UNE INTERFACE (SURFACE LIBRE ET JOINT DE GRAINS). LA SIMULATION NUMERIQUE A L'ECHELLE ATOMIQUE PERMET DE TRAITER CES SITUATIONS OU L'ON NE DISPOSE PAS DE THEORIE ADAPTEE, LA PREPONDERANCE DES EFFETS DE COEUR RENDANT L'APPLICATION DE LA THEORIE ELASTIQUE DES DISLOCATIONS IMPOSSIBLE. DEUX METAUX CFC AFFICHANT DES CONFIGURATIONS D'EQUILIBRE POUR LA DISLOCATION RADICALEMENT DIFFERENTES SONT CONSIDERES : L'ALUMINIUM ET LE CUIVRE. APRES AVOIR ELABORE UN MODELE POUR L'ALUMINIUM AINSI QU'UNE PROCEDURE D'APPLICATION DE CONTRAINTE LOCALE, ON ETUDIE LA STRUCTURE DE COEUR DES DISLOCATIONS (COIN ET VIS, PARFAITES ET DISSOCIEES) POUR LES DEUX MODELES. ON PROPOSE UNE DEFINITION DE RAYON DE COEUR POUR LA DISLOCATION QUI AUTORISE UN CHANGEMENT D'ECHELLE DANS LA DESCRIPTION DU DEFAUT. L'ETUDE DE CONFIGURATIONS DE DIPOLE MONTRE QUE DEUX DISLOCATIONS COIN DE SIGNES OPPOSES SE RECOMBINENT SPONTANEMENT SI LA DISTANCE ENTRE LEURS PLANS DE GLISSEMENT EST FAIBLE. ON CALCULE ENSUITE LA VARIATION D'ENERGIE D'EXCES ASSOCIEE AU MOUVEMENT PROGRESSIF D'UNE DISLOCATION VERS UNE SURFACE LIBRE, ESTIMANT AINSI LA CONTRAINTE NECESSAIRE POUR INTRODUIRE UN TEL DEFAUT DANS LE MATERIAU. ON MONTRE EGALEMENT QUE L'INTERACTION ENTRE UNE DISLOCATION VIS ET UN JOINT DE GRAINS EST ATTRACTIVE, L'INTERFACE PIEGEANT LA DISLOCATION TOUT EN FAVORISANT LA DEFORMATION DANS LE GRAIN CONTENANT LA DISLOCATION INCIDENTE. ENFIN, LES RESULTATS OBTENUS PAR SIMULATION D'UN ESSAI DE TRACTION SUR MICRO-EPROUVETTE CONFIRMENT QUE LES MARCHES DE SURFACE SONT DES LIEUX DE NUCLEATION PRIVILEGIE POUR LES DISLOCATIONS.

Book excerpt: "Simon Denny's new body of work for Portikus ranks among the most ambitious the artist has developed to date. Over the period of one year, the artist researched and developed an intricate project that has grown to considerable dimensions -- both physically and in terms of its critical content. For two months, the monumental gallery space is turned into an homage to technology, communication, and the relentless need for innovation. Simon Denny has produced an embracing and multi-faceted installation that functions as a documentary of the South Korean technology giant Samsung and its global success story. The exhibition's title, "New Management", refers to the legendary management philosophy that Lee Kun-hee, Chairman of the Samsung Group, infamously introduced in the early nineties."--Publisher's website.

Book excerpt: In the early 20th century, art and its institutions came under critique from a new democratic and egalitarian spirit. In an age of secularism and materialism, artworks would be understood as merely things among other things. This meant an attack on the techniques of realism, and the traditional mission of the museum, both designed shield a small class of objects from the entropic fate awaiting everything else-and the development of an approach that Boris Groys calls "direct realism": an art that would not produce objects, but practices that could enter the flow of time to live and die like the rest of us. But for more than a century now, every advance in this direction has been quickly followed by new means of preserving art's distinction. In this major new work, Groys, one of the world's leading art theorists, charts the paradoxes produced by this tension, which continues to structure the production and reception of new art. The internet, the latest medium through which artists have attempted to disavow this special status, inverts the most notorious consequence of early modernist developments. If the techniques of mechanical reproduction gave us objects without aura, digital production generates aura without objects, transforming all its materials into vanishing markers of the transitory present.

Book excerpt: Although much recent social science and humanities work has been a revolt against simplification, this volume explores the contrast between simplicity and complexity to reveal that this dichotomy, itself, is too simplistic. John Law and Annemarie Mol have gathered a distinguished panel of contributors to offer—particularly within the field of science studies—approaches to a theory of complexity, and at the same time a theoretical introduction to the topic. Indeed, they examine not only ways of relating to complexity but complexity in practice. Individual essays study complexity from a variety of perspectives, addressing market behavior, medical interventions, aeronautical design, the governing of supranational states, ecology, roadbuilding, meteorology, the science of complexity itself, and the psychology of childhood trauma. Other topics include complex wholes (holism) in the sciences, moral complexity in seemingly amoral endeavors, and issues relating to the protection of African elephants. With a focus on such concepts as multiplicity, partial connections, and ebbs and flows, the collection includes narratives from Kenya, Great Britain, Papua New Guinea, the Netherlands, France, and the meetings of the European Commission, written by anthropologists, economists, philosophers, psychologists, sociologists, and scholars of science, technology, and society. Contributors. Andrew Barry, Steven D. Brown, Michel Callon, Chunglin Kwa, John Law, Nick Lee, Annemarie Mol, Marilyn Strathern, Laurent Thévenot, Charis Thompson

Book excerpt: Borrowing its name from the ancient sewer in Rome, Belgian conceptualist Wim Delvoye's new and improved "Cloaca" is a room-sized shit-making machine whose bowels process two meals a day, serving up a mouthful of complex themes: scatalogy and disgust, high and low culture, man as machine and vice-versa, and the inversion of art semiotics. Many of these same concerns are processed in Delvoye's other work, like the life-sized carved walnut replica of a cement truck, the wood cabinet stocked with 32 circular saw blades painted with scenes in Delft China blue, and a herd of pigs tatooed by Antwerp's finest needle-men. Feces and other anal subjects are parsed in accompanying essays by such luminaries as Milan Kundera, Gerardo Mosquera, Dan Cameron, Georges Bataille and Salvador Dali.

Bringing together multiple voices, it focuses on communication’s role in the constitution of organization. Editors Linda L. Putnam and Anne Maydan Nicotera have assembled an all-star cast of contributors, each providing a distinctive voice and perspective. The contents of this volume compare and contrast approaches to the notion that communication constitutes organization. Chapters also examine the ways that those processes produce patterns that endure over time and that constitute the organization as a whole. This collection bridges different disciplines and serves a vital role in developing dimensions, characteristics, and relationships among concepts that address how communication constitutes organization. It will appeal to scholars and researchers working in organizational communication, organizational studies, management, sociology, social collectives, and organizational psychology and behavior.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Situated Organization explores recent research in organizational communication, emphasizing the organization as constructed in and emerging out of communication practices. Working from the tradition of the Montreal School in its approach, it focuses not only on how an organization’s members understand the purposes of the organization through communication, but also on how they realize and recognize the organization itself as they work within it. The text breaks through with an alternative viewpoint to the currently popular idea of 'organization-as-network,' viewing organization instead as a configuration of agencies, and their fields of practice. It serves as an original, comprehensive, and well-written text, elaborated by case studies that make the theory come to life. The substantial ideas and insights are presented in a deep and meaningful way while remaining comprehensible for student readers. This text has been developed for students at all levels of study in organizational communication, who need a systematic introduction to conducting empirical field research. It will serve as an invaluable sourcebook in planning and conducting research.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An examination of why paper continues to fill our offices and a proposal for better coordination of the paper and digital worlds. Over the past thirty years, many people have proclaimed the imminent arrival of the paperless office. Yet even the World Wide Web, which allows almost any computer to read and display another computer's documents, has increased the amount of printing done. The use of e-mail in an organization causes an average 40 percent increase in paper consumption. In The Myth of the Paperless Office, Abigail Sellen and Richard Harper use the study of paper as a way to understand the work that people do and the reasons they do it the way they do. Using the tools of ethnography and cognitive psychology, they look at paper use from the level of the individual up to that of organizational culture. Central to Sellen and Harper's investigation is the concept of "affordances"—the activities that an object allows, or affords. The physical properties of paper (its being thin, light, porous, opaque, and flexible) afford the human actions of grasping, carrying, folding, writing, and so on. The concept of affordance allows them to compare the affordances of paper with those of existing digital devices. They can then ask what kinds of devices or systems would make new kinds of activities possible or better support current activities. The authors argue that paper will continue to play an important role in office life. Rather than pursue the ideal of the paperless office, we should work toward a future in which paper and electronic document tools work in concert and organizational processes make optimal use of both.

Book excerpt: What does it mean to speak with a collective voice? This is the central question addressed in Rhetoric in an Organizational Society. The author explains how in advanced industrial society many of the messages that individuals see and hear are associated with organizations of great size, resources, and power. Organizational messages take the forms of advertising, public relations, issue advocacy, doctrine, annual reports, policy statements, newsletters, declarations, and so forth. However, given an accustomed emphasis on the individual, citizens and scholars alike have difficulty interpreting messages that represent collectiveness.

It brings the work of scholars in communication, management, information technology, and other disciplines together in a coherent volume that represents existing research and theory on communication-related knowledge work. Chapters address what constitutes knowledge, how knowledge functions within and across organizations, and how organizational members develop and manage knowledge for organizational purposes. The book also provides a forum for these scholars to pose directions for future research and theorizing. It will serve as a reference tool for scholars and practitioners to identify and understand communicative features of organizational knowledge processes.
