Book excerpt: Abstract Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are the most luminous transient events in the observed Universe. However, there is no direct observational evidence for what exactly drives a GRB. The most widely accepted model for these cosmic events is the fireball model where it is thought that a substantial fraction of the kinetic energy of the source is converted to gamma-radiation by shock accelerated electrons emitting synchrotron and inverse-Compton radiation. The acceleration of protons in the gamma-ray emitting region of the GRB has been hypothesized as well. In this hadronic acceleration model, it is predicted that protons may interact with gamma-ray photons to produce a burst of neutrinos at energy ∼10^14 eV during prompt emission and energy ∼10^18 eV during afterglow emission. Several experimental searches for these high energy neutrinos have been conducted and no GRB neutrinos have yet been found. The analytical prediction for neutrino flux has been replaced with a more thorough numerical prediction for neutrino flux. The neutron model of GRBs, where only neutrons can escape the GRB and reach Earth as cosmic rays, has been ruled out by the experimental work of IceCube and ANTARES. Upgraded versions of current experiments such as IceCube, ANTARES, ANITA and ARA, as well as new experiments such as KM3NeT, are preparing to probe and further constrain the fireball paradigm of GRB neutrino production. This review includes: Introduction Early theoretical predictions for neutrino fluences due to GRBs Overview of high energy neutrino experiments and related physics Experimental searches for high energy neutrinos from GRBs Prospects for detection of high energy neutrinos from GRBs High Energy Neutrinos from Gamma Ray Bursts: Theoretical Predictions, Experimental Searches, and Prospects for Detection was originally written as a review submitted for my Ph.D. candidacy paper on Nov 23, 2015. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book excerpt: A review is given of particle production by neutrinos in charged-current inclusive and exclusive channels. The production rates for various particles in neutrino-nucleon interactions at a beam energy of 25 GeV are compared. The mesons are, of course, dominated by pion production. The p°(760) rate is an order of magnitude smaller. Strange and charm pseudoscalar mesons are a further factor of two down in rate. The strange vector mesons are suppressed by more than an order of magnitude relative to K° production; however, the charmed D*(2010) is only a factor of two smaller in rate than the D°(1860). With regards to the baryons, most of them are, of course, nucleons. The .lambda.° and Y*(1385) rates are down by one and two orders of magnitudes, respectively. The lower limit on the charmed .sigma./sub c//sup + +/ baryon rate is similar to the Y*(1385) rate. Finally, the quasielastic and one-pion production exclusive channels have about the same cross section as that of the D*; associated production of strange particles in the .nu.n .-->. .mu.−K+.lambda. channel and the .delta. S = +.delta cap omega. process .nu.p .-->. .mu.−pK+ are down by factors of five and twenty, respectively, compared to the quasielastic cross section.

Book excerpt: Sterile neutrinos can be generated in the early universe through oscillations with active neutrinos and represent a popular and well-studied candidate for our universe's dark matter. Stringent constraints from X-ray and gamma-ray line searches, however, have excluded the simplest of such models. In this letter, we propose a novel alternative to the standard scenario in which the mixing angle between the sterile and active neutrinos is a dynamical quantity, induced through interactions with a light axion-like field. As the energy density of the axion-like particles is diluted by Hubble expansion, the degree of mixing is reduced at late times, suppressing the decay rate and easily alleviating any tension with X-ray or gamma-ray constraints. We present a simple model which illustrates the phenomenology of this scenario, and also describe a framework in which the QCD axion is responsible for the production of sterile neutrinos in the early universe.

Book excerpt: This dissertation studies aspects of three of the biggest unsolved problems with the Standard Model of Particle Physics: the matter-antimatter asymmetry in the universe, neutrino masses, and dark matter. While the SM has been very successful in explaining most experimental results, it does not provide a satisfactory solution to the matter -- anti-matter asymmetry problem. One of the simplest and most elegant solutions to this problem is electroweak baryogenesis. An addition to the Standard Model of a real, gauge-singlet scalar field, coupled via a Higgs portal interaction, can reopen the possibility of a strongly first-order electroweak phase transition and successful electroweak baryogenesis. In the first part of this work, we study a subset of such models and evaluate the bubble nucleation temperature throughout the parameter space where a first-order transition is expected. In addition, we also look at vacuum bubble wall velocity and how it impacts baryogenesis in these models. Another limitation of the SM is that it models the neutrinos as massless, even though experiments have shown that this is not true. The mass generation mechanism of neutrinos is still unknown, and popular see-saw models with Majorana masses have proven difficult to test. The Clockwork mechanism can be used to generate Dirac masses, and can explain the smallness of neutrino masses without introducing unnaturally small input parameters. In the second part of this thesis, we study the simplest Clockwork neutrino model, the "uniform" clockwork, as well as a broader class of "generalized" clockwork models. We derive constraints on such models from lepton-flavor violating processes, as well as precision electroweak fits. Further, we analyse simulated collider data and study the prospects for detection of the models at the LHC and future colliders. The third and final part of this thesis is about Dark Matter. All the evidence we have for Dark Matter (DM) is through gravitational interactions, and its microscopic nature is one of the most urgent questions in theoretical physics. We present an unconventional model for the production of dark matter: the conformal freeze-in scenario. At the time when the dark sector is populated in the early universe, it is described by a strongly coupled conformal field theory and as such, cannot be described by particle states. As the universe cools, cosmological phase transitions in the standard model sector or loop induced deformations of the conformal field theory induce conformal symmetry breaking and confinement in the dark sector. One of the resulting dark bound states is stable on the cosmological time scales and plays the role of dark matter.

Book excerpt: Neutrino astronomy began with the detection of solar neutrinos, supernova neutrinos(SN1987A) and more recently the 37 events in IceCube which are very likelyto be an astrophysical origin. The result from IceCube is perhaps the most excitingdiscovery of the year 2013, capping a several decades long search. Variousastrophysical candidates have been proposed as sources of high energy neutrinos, although the origin of the IceCube neutrinos remains a mystery. Gamma-raybursts (GRBs), the most energetic explosions in the universe, were considered asthe most promising source for high energy cosmic rays and neutrinos (with AGNs).However, a previous search of GRB neutrinos by IceCube surprised the GRB communitywith negative results, challenging the simple standard picture of GRBprompt emission which is called the \internal shock" model. In this thesis we givea closer investigation of this model as well as several leading alternative models. With a careful consideration of the particle physics and the model parameters weshow that the previous negative result with GRB neutrinos is not surprising, andonly those models with extremely optimistic parameters can be ruled out. Wepredict that GRBs are unlikely to be the sole sources of the IceCube events, butsignals of GRB neutrinos may be detected in the near future, with the neutrinotelescopes such as IceCube/DeepCore, KM3Net, ARA, ARIANNA, ANITA etc.
