Elle connecte les masses d'eau des subtropiques à l'équateur via les courants de bord ouest de faibles latitudes (LLWBCs) et pourrait de ce fait moduler à l'échelle décennale le climat du Pacifique tropical. Très peu d'observations sont disponibles pour l'étude de cette région. Un des objectifs principaux de cette étude est la mise en place d'un modèle réaliste d'océan à haute résolution (1/36°) de la mer des Salomon permettant la résolution d'une large gamme d'échelles, particulièrement la mésoéchelle et marginalement la sous-mésoéchelle. La circulation générale est étudiée ainsi que la variabilité à mésoéchelle et à sous-mésoéchelle. La représentation de la circulation simulée par le modèle 1/36° est non seulement validée par les observations disponibles mais aussi améliorée par rapport à celle simulée par les modèles antérieurs. La variabilité mésoéchelle simulée dans le modèle à haute résolution est fortement augmentée par rapport à celle issue des modèles antérieurs et est en bon accord avec les observations. Des études spectrales en nombre d'onde de la température de surface, de la dénivellation de la surface libre et de l'énergie cinétique ont été réalisées dans la mer des Salomon et suggèrent que les pentes spectrales obtenues sont proches de la théorie classique de la quasi-géostrophie de surface (SQG).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the southwest Pacific, thermocline waters connecting the tropics to the equator via western boundary currents transit throught the Solomon Sea. For this reason, this poorly known sea may modulate the tropical Pacific climate. In this thesis, we implemented a high-resolution model of the Solomon Sea which enabled us to characterize the regional oceanic circulations in the thermocline layer, and their variabilities. We notably showed that part of the New Guinea Coastal Undercurrent waters join the New Ireland Coastal Undercurrent, which partly retroflects to the Equatorial Undercurrent, providing the most direct western noundary-equator connection. The Solomon Sea western boundary currents' seasonal variability results from the combination of equatorial and of Rossby waves dynamics. A lagrangian analysis of the model results enabled us to characterize the pathways followed by the water masses transiting through the Solomon Sea to join the equatorial Pacific, and their transformations. We showed that strong diapycnal mixing occurs and is responsible for a downward heat transfer and for tje erosion of the maximum of salinity of the upper thermocline. The analysis of available and of reprocessed altimetric data enabled us to study the seasonal and interannual variabilities of the circulation in the Solomon Sea. We notably underlined the intensification of the western boundary currents during El Niño events, which counter balance the depletion of the warm pool in the equatorial western Pacific.

A ce titre, cette région méconnue peut moduler le climat du Pacifique tropical. Dans cette thèse, nous avons implémenté un modèle haute résolution de la mer des Salomon qui nous a permis de caractériser les circulations océaniques de la région dans la thermocline, ainsi que leurs variabilités. Nous avons notamment montré qu'une partie des eaux du New Guinea Costal Undercurrent rejoint le New Irelent Coastal Undercurrent. Ce courant se retroflecte partiellement dans l'Equatorial Undercurrent, produisant une connexion directe à la thermocline équatoriale. Le cycle saisonnier de cette circulation est forcé par le régime des ondes équatoriales au nord, et par le regime des ondes de Rossby au sud et à l'est. Une approche lagrangienne des résultats du modèle nous a permis de caractériser les chemins empruntés par les masses d'eau transitant en mer des Salomon avant de rejoindre le Pacifique équatorial, ainsi que leurs transformations. Nous montrons qu'un fort mélange diapycnal est responsable d'un transfert de chaleur vers le fond et d'une érosion du maximum de salinité présent dans la thermocline. Une approche parallèle d'analyse des observations altimétriques disponibles et de retraitement de données altimétriques nous a permis d'étudier la variabilité de la circulation des mer des Salomon, aux échelles saisonnières et interannuelles. Nous avons notamment mis en évidence l'intensification des courants de bord ouest pendant les évènements El Niño, qui vient compenser la déplétion du volume d'eau chaude du Pacifique équatorial ouest.

Ces fines échelles spatiales concernent à la fois des phénomènes dits de méso et sous mésoéchelle, produits par la dynamique océanique (tourbillons, filaments) mais aussi des ondes internes (dont la marée barocline ou marée interne). Les fines échelles sont une source importante de mélange pour l'océan. La méso et sous mésoéchelle océanique traduisent une dynamique turbulente associée à des cascades d'énergie donnant lieu à des pentes spectrales sur des spectres en nombre d'onde de niveau de la mer ou d'énergie cinétique tourbillonnaire. Les pentes spectrales des spectres du niveau de la mer altimétrique sont calculées dans la bande 250-70 km, ces pentes sont très plates dans les tropiques. Par conséquence, elles sont en désaccord aussi bien avec les théories de la turbulence qu'avec les pentes des spectres du niveau de la mer des modèles numériques. Cette thèse vise à élucider ces désaccords dans le Pacifique tropical (20°S-20°N), en quantifiant les niveaux d'énergie et les longueurs d'onde relatives à la dynamique méso-échelle et aux ondes internes. L'importance de la marée interne dans les tropiques est illustrée dans le contexte régional de la mer des Salomon, où cette marée contribue à un fort mélange dans une zone de connexion entre la région subtropicale et la région équatoriale. La première partie de la thèse est une analyse spectrale 3D (fréquence, longueurs d'ondes zonales et méridiennes) de la dynamique tropicale à partir d'un modèle au 1/12°. Book excerpt: Les eaux du gyre subtropical du Pacifique sud sont majoritairement transportées vers l'ouest par le Courant Equatorial Sud (SEC) situé entre 2°S et 30°S. Se dirigeant vers l'équateur via les courants de bord ouest, les eaux de thermocline (~300 m de profondeur) ont notamment été identifiées comme contribuant à la modulation basse fréquence du phénomène climatique El Niño-Oscillation Australe (ENSO). Initialement large et zonal, le SEC se divise en plusieurs jets et courants de bord ouest à la rencontre des archipels de Fidji (18° S-180° E), du Vanuatu (16°S-168° E), de la Nouvelle Calédonie (22° S-165° E) et des côtes australiennes. Entre 10° S et 20° S, ces eaux entrent en mer de Corail sous la forme de deux jets zonaux: le Jet Nord Calédonien (18° S-16° S) et le Jet Nord Vanuatu (14° S-11° S). Dans cette thèse, nous nous sommes consacrés à documenter la circulation océanique à l'aide de données hydrologiques issues de campagnes océanographiques (1993-2010) en adoptant deux méthodes d'inversion: le " modèle inverse en boite " et l'" analyse multi-paramétrique optimale ". Nous avons ensuite abordé la variabilité interannuelle pour replacer ces analyses et déterminer les impacts sur la circulation. Dans la première partie, nous avons étudié des situations synoptiques afin de mettre en évidence le Courant Est Calédonien alimentant le Jet Nord Calédonien. Ces deux courants similaires sont fins (100 km) et profonds (0-1000 m) et transportent environ 15 Sv (1 Sverdrup = 106 m3.s-1). Plus au nord, le Jet Nord Vanuatu est plus large (~300 km) et moins profond (0-500 m); il transporte environ 20 Sv. Ces eaux se dirigent vers l'Australie où elles alimentent la mer des Salomon par l'intermédiaire du Sous-courant Côtier de Nouvelle Guinée estimé à 30 Sv. Ces analyses, au cours desquelles nous avons appliqué la méthode du modèle inverse en boite, montrent que ces structures de courants sont caractérisées par les propriétés des masses d'eau. Dans une deuxième partie, à l'aide d'une analyse multi-paramétrique optimale avec les paramètres (T, S, et O2), nous nous sommes focalisés sur les masses d'eau en établissant un lien avec la circulation dynamique. Nous avons mis en évidence le tra jet et le mélange des eaux intermédiaires et des eaux de thermocline. Dans la thermocline, l'alimentation du Sous-courant Côtier de Nouvelle Guinée est essentiellement assurée par les masses d'eau transportées par le Jet Nord Vanuatu, tandis que les eaux intermédiaires sont issues du Jet Nord Calédonien. Cette vision complémentaire de la circulation océanique alimentant la bande équatoriale montrent que les eaux intermédiaires sont principalement transportées par les courants profonds tandis que les eaux de thermocline sont issues majoritairement du Jet Nord Vanuatu. Dans une troisième partie, la variabilité de la circulation océanique est analysée sur la période 1993-2010 à l'aide d'une simulation numérique au 1/10 et d'une méthode de reconstruction de profils hydrologiques utilisant les données satellitaires. Nous montrons que la variabilité interannuelle du SEC suit de trois mois le phénomène ENSO, et qu'elle est dominée par la variabilité du Jet Nord Vanuatu. Contrôlée par les vents, la variabilité du SEC est associée à une modulation de la pente de la thermocline, qui induit une intensification de 6 ± 4 Sv suite à un évènement El Niño et un ralentissement de 4 ± 4 Sv après un évènement La Niña. Nous montrons également que la modulation de la thermocline entraîne l'apparition d'anomalies de température et de salinité, susceptibles d'être transmises vers la bande équatoriale. Ce travail de thèse a ainsi permis d'augmenter la compréhension de la circulation régionale et fournit de nouvelles pistes d'investigations pour l'étude de la dynamique de la mer de Corail.

They are believed to play a key role in heat and mass budgets of the equatorial Pacific and cross, as a final passage, the Solomon Sea southeast of Papua New Guinea. As part of a France-U.S. collaboration, two oceanographic multidisciplinary cruises were conducted in the Solomon Sea during contrasting trade wind sea- sons, in July-August 2012 and March 2014 to characterize currents, water properties and their modifications. During July-August 2012, the season of strong southeasterly trade winds, an in- tense flow of 36 ± 3 Sv from the surface down to 1000 m is entering the Solomon Sea, that falls by 70% to 11 ± 3 Sv in March 2014 when the winds over the sea are weaker. The LLWBCs are associated with distinct water mass properties across the Solomon Sea that can be tracked along their pathways, and undergo significant modifications between the southern entrance and the northern exits of the sea. Below 2000 m, the Upper Circumpolar Deep Water (UCDW) has been traced from the New Caledonia Trench and the South Fiji Basin into the Solomon Sea, associ- ated with a volume transport of 2-3 ± 2 Sv. Preliminary analyses of the mooring array in each major exit channel indicate large time variability of the LLWBCs in both =intensity and vertical extent, where thermocline pathways vary in most cases, coherently and in phase at intraseasonal to seasonal time scales.

However, since the beginning of the industrial era, these ecosystems have been subjected to strong anthropogenic pressures intensified from the second half of the 20th century, when there was a marked acceleration in the warming (climate change) of the continents, particularly at high latitudes. Coastal ecosystems are highly vulnerable to alteration of their physical, chemical and biological characteristics (marine intrusion, acidification of marine environments, changes in ecosystems, evolution and artificialization of the coastline, etc.).In contact with heavily populated areas, these environments are often the receptacle of a lot of chemical and biological pollution sources that significantly diminish their resilience. In this context of accelerated evolution and degradation of these areas important for food security of many populations around the world, it is necessary to better identify the factors of pressure and understand, at different scales of observation, their effects and impacts on the biodiversity and on the socio-eco-systems, in order to determine the degree of vulnerability of these coastal ecosystems and the risks they face. A transdisciplinary and integrated approach is required to prevent risks. Within this framework, operational coastal oceanography occupies an important place but also the implementation of a true socio-eco-system approach in order to set up an environmentally friendly development.

Spits are unique natural environments whose evolution is linked to the adjacent coast and near shore morphology, sediment supply, coastal dynamics and sea-level change. Over the past century, Global Mean Sea Level (GMSL) has risen by 10 to 20 centimetres and many coastal spits represent the first sentinel against coastal submersion. Scientific research indicates that sea levels worldwide have been rising at a rate of 3.5 millimetres per year since the early 1990s, roughly twice the average speed of the preceding 80 years. This trend, linked to global warming will undoubtedly cause major changes in spit morphology. Spits are highly mobile coastal landforms that respond rapidly to environmental change. They therefore represent a signature of past environmental change and provide a landform indicator of climate change.

Effects of Trawling and Dredging on Seafloor Habitat describes how assessment of fishing impacts depends on gear type, number and location of bottom tows, and the physical and biological characteristics of seafloor habitats. Many experimental studies have documented acute, gear-specific effects of trawling and dredging on various types of habitat. These studies indicate that low mobility, long-lived species are more vulnerable to towed fishing gear than short-lived species in areas where the seabed is often disturbed by natural phenomena. Trawling and dredging may also change the composition and productivity of fish communities dependent on seafloor habitats for food and refuge. The scale of these impacts depends on the level of fishing effort.
