Download or read book Applied Mineralogy in the Mining Industry written by W. Petruk and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2000-11-29 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Techniques of performing applied mineralogy investigations, and applications and capabilities of recently developed instruments for measuring mineral properties are explored in this book intended for practicing applied mineralogists, students in mineralogy and metallurgy, and mineral processing engineers. The benefits of applied mineralogy are presented by using in-depth applied mineralogy studies on base metal ores, gold ores, porphyry copper ores, iron ores and industrial minerals as examples. The chapter on base metal ores includes a discussion on the effects of liberation, particle sizes and surfaces coatings of Pb, Cu, Fe, Ca and So4- on the recoveries of sphalerite, galena and chalcopyrite. The chapter on gold discusses various methods of determining the quantities of gold in different minerals, including 'invisible' gold in pyrite and arsenopyrite, so that a balance of the distribution of gold among the minerals can be calculated. This book also discusses the roles of pyrite, oxygen, moisture and bacterial (thiobacillus ferrooxidans) on reactions that produce acidic drainage from tailings piles, and summarizes currently used and proposed methods of remediation of acidic drainage.

Book Synopsis The Heavy Elements by : J. E. Fergusson
Download or read book The Heavy Elements written by J. E. Fergusson and published by Pergamon. This book was released on 1990 with total page 632 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This text provides a broad survey of the ten heavier elements of the p-block, which have a number of features in common as well as displaying periodic trends. Full comprehension of the chemistry of the elements is necessary before complete understanding of environmental and health effects is possible. In many texts, however, basic chemistry is avoided as too complex or uninteresting. The author's approach in this case is to use the disciplines of health and environmental science to enhance understanding of the chemistry and to provide students with an integrated approach to the influence of the elements on the world. Information is provided on concentrations, sources and speciation of the heavy elements and their effects on the health of human beings. The text is intended to stimulate students to investigate further aspects of the heavy elements, and contribute to this young but rapidly growing field.

Book Synopsis Contamination des sols by : Anne Tremel-Schaub
Download or read book Contamination des sols written by Anne Tremel-Schaub and published by L'Editeur : EDP Sciences. This book was released on 2005 with total page 413 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
Book Synopsis Applied Bioremediation and Phytoremediation by : Ajay Singh
Download or read book Applied Bioremediation and Phytoremediation written by Ajay Singh and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2004-06-15 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The huge expansion of the chemical and petroleum industries in the twentieth century has resulted in the production of a vast array of chem ical compounds and materials that have transformed our lives. The associated large-scale manufacturing, processing and handling activi ties have caused a serious deterioration in environmental quality and created threats to human health. These negative impacts have led to responses and regulations requiring remedial action in support of envi ronmental sustainability. of biotechnological methods through bioremediation, Application has gained prominence as an option for soil remediation methods. Bioremediation is a multidisciplinary approach where biologists, chem ists, soil scientists and engineers work as team to develop and imple ment remediation processes. Bioremediation has now been used successfully to remediate many petroleum-contaminated sites. However, there are as yet no commercial technologies commonly used to reme diate the most recalcitrant contaminants. Nevertheless, bioremediation is a rapidly advancing field and new bio-based remedial technologies are continuing to emerge.
Book Synopsis Bioavailability of Contaminants in Soils and Sediments by : National Research Council
Download or read book Bioavailability of Contaminants in Soils and Sediments written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2003-04-03 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bioavailability refers to the extent to which humans and ecological receptors are exposed to contaminants in soil or sediment. The concept of bioavailability has recently piqued the interest of the hazardous waste industry as an important consideration in deciding how much waste to clean up. The rationale is that if contaminants in soil and sediment are not bioavailable, then more contaminant mass can be left in place without creating additional risk. A new NRC report notes that the potential for the consideration of bioavailability to influence decision-making is greatest where certain chemical, environmental, and regulatory factors align. The current use of bioavailability in risk assessment and hazardous waste cleanup regulations is demystified, and acceptable tools and models for bioavailability assessment are discussed and ranked according to seven criteria. Finally, the intimate link between bioavailability and bioremediation is explored. The report concludes with suggestions for moving bioavailability forward in the regulatory arena for both soil and sediment cleanup.

Book Synopsis Sols contaminés, sols à décontaminer by : Facultés universitaires Saint-Louis.
Download or read book Sols contaminés, sols à décontaminer written by Facultés universitaires Saint-Louis. Centre d'étude du droit de l'environnement and published by Publications Fac St Louis. This book was released on 1996 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
Download or read book Le sol written by Raoul Calvet and published by Editions France Agricole. This book was released on 2013-11-06 with total page 678 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
