A ellos está dedicada la primera parte del libro. Y a partir de ahí nos atrevemos a proponer: la ética exige autonomía, aporta racionalidad y puede recibir de la religión un horizonte de sentido, propuestas de felicidad, utopías, esperanza y ágape. Ética y religión necesitan reconocerse y respetarse. Como trasfondo hay cuestiones muy hondas: la referencia o no a la metafísica, la necesaria superación de los conceptos de “naturaleza” y “ley natural”, la autonomía, la universalidad y la cuestión sobre si los valores se construyen, se inventan o se descubren. La relación entre ética y religión no puede pensarse sino en un ámbito de respeto y diálogo, que hay que llevar al compromiso con la realidad para afrontar los problemas humanos. Y al mismo tiempo conviene no olvidar que la dignidad de las personas no es dialogable y que la ética no sabe qué decir cuando la religión habla de resurrección y vida eterna.

Frente al XVIII como el siglo de la razón, el pueblo es eminentemente religioso. La opción de Rousseau por el sentimiento religioso es una opción epistemológica pero a su vez es una opción social, una opción por el pueblo llano, frente a la razón auspiciada por la élite. Rousseau propone una revolución moral presidida por esquemas religiosos, aunque esta religión tiene que adaptarse a los nuevos tiempos: la metafísica debe ceder ante lo terrenal, o la moral primar frente a lo teológico. La religión civil, como religión patriótica, es expresión de su deísmo en el ámbito político.

Book excerpt: This book is the first comprehensive analysis of the thought of Ignacio Ellacuría, the Jesuit philosopher-theologian martyred for his work on behalf of Latin America's oppressed peoples. While serving as president of the Jesuit-run University of Central America in the midst of El Salvador's brutal civil war, Ellacuría was also a prolific writer. His advocacy on behalf of the country's persecuted majority provoked the enmity of the Salvadoran political establishment. On November 16, 1989, members of the Salvadoran military entered the university's campus and murdered Ellacuría, along with five other Jesuit priests and two women. Kevin F. Burke, SJ, shows why Ellacuría is significant not only as a martyr but also as a theologian. Ellacuría effectively integrated philosophy, history, anthropology, and sociopolitical analysis into his theological reflections on salvation, spirituality, and the church to create an original contribution to liberation theology. Ellacuría's writings directly address one of the most vexing issues in theology today: can theologians account for the demands arising from both the particularity of their various social-historical situations and also the universal claims of Christian revelation? Burke explains how Ellacuría bases theology in a philosophy of historical reality—the "ground beneath the cross"—and interprets the suffering of "the crucified peoples" in the light of Jesus' crucifixion.
