Book excerpt: This book is an ethnographic account of colonialism in the Andaman Islands, Bay of Bengal, India. It examines the links between colonialism and development under British and Indian administrations, and analyses how the different indigenous groups (the Andamanese, the Onge, the Jarawa and the Sentinelese) have responded differently and been affected in different ways by colonization and the everyday dynamics of colonial administrative practices. It emphasizes particularly the dynamics of power and gender. The books also looks at the present situation of the Jarawa who, until recently, were known as a people that avoided contact with the sorrounding society. The book concludes with a section on current advocacy initiatives being spearheaded by civil society organizations and scholars aimed at securing the Jarawas' right to territory and to choose for themselves which future they want. The book includes an appendix containing the 2003 'Draft Policy on the Jarawas' (by Shri K.B. Saxena, member of the Expert Committee on the Jarawas) as well as an alternative Jarawa policy framework drafted by a group of independent experts and observers, of which the author is a member.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an engaging look at spiritual awakenings that have happened in the church throughout history. It examines how these extraordinary movements of God translate into the larger cultural analysis of today. Spiritual awakenings have refreshed the people of God from the very origins of the church. What about these past movements can be instructive for the church today? Can we expect God’s awakening presence in our day? These questions brought about the “Surprising Work of God Conference” in the fall of 2015 in which speakers traced awakening movements from the Old and New Testaments to the present day. Great Awakenings represents the culmination of this conference as the collected works of notable speakers. Chapters address questions about spiritual awakenings through historical, theological, and sociological lenses. They look at the events that precipitated these awakenings, evaluating whether their causes were purely religious or otherwise, and finally suggest what about the awakenings is normative for the church today.

Book excerpt: Authored as a result of a remarkable collaboration between indigenous people's own leaders, other social activists and scholars from a wide range of disciplines, this volume explores what is happening today to indigenous peoples as they are enmeshed, almost inevitably, in the remorseless expansion of the modern economy and development, at the behest of the pressures of the market-place and government. It is particularly timely, given the rise in criticism of free market capitalism generally, as well as of development. The volume seeks to capture the complex, power-laden, often contradictory features of indigenous agency and relationships. It shows how peoples do not just resist or react to the pressures of market and state, but also initiate and sustain "life projects" of their own which embody local history and incorporate plans to improve their social and economic ways of living.

He backs up this substantial claim with the scholarly attentiveness we've come to expect from him.

The world of nation-states is much more diverse than previously realized; only a small number of the 185 independent countries are truly homogeneous. With the end of the cold war, the relative importance of ethnic conflicts as a threat to international peace and stability is far greater. An international set of scholars collaborate in this volume to explore policy alternatives which can contribute towards the accommodation of cultural diversity.

Because of their intimate experience in the communities where genocide takes place, anthropologists are uniquely positioned to explain how and why this mass annihilation occurs and the types of devastation genocide causes. This ground breaking book, the first collection of original essays on genocide to be published in anthropology, explores a wide range of cases, including Nazi Germany, Cambodia, Guatemala, Rwanda, and Bosnia.
