Download or read book Stratification in Israel written by Moshe Semyonov and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-01-22 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Until recently, issues surrounding ethnic-linked inequality, whether between Jews and Arabs or between Jewish ethnic groups, have dominated research on stratification in Israel to the exclusion of other dimensions. Rapidly growing inequality in Israeli society, and its intergenerational persistence, however, have generated several new trends in research. The chapters included in this volume represent the range and depth of recent developments in the study of social stratification, mobility, and inequality. Although they address a variety of issues, they have in common a focus on the institutional mechanisms that govern the allocation of rewards.

Download or read book Ethnic Integration in Israel written by Michael Inbar and published by Transaction Publishers. This book was released on 1977-01-01 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study addresses the problem of ethnic stratification in Israel. It is a cross-cultural study based on matched brothers who emigrated from Morocco -- one to France, one to Israel. It probes whether the under-achievement of an ethnic minority -- the Moroccan Jews -- is society-specific or not. The results include a cross-cultural documentation of the relationship existing among immigrants between occupational success and national identification, the effect of two different social structures on children's school achievements, and the discovery of a vulnerable age effect for children who emigrate. The authors use for the first time a multivariate technique proposed by James S. Coleman for estimating the degree to which a matching procedure is satisfactory. Book Synopsis The Arab Minority In Israel's Economy by : Noah Lewin-epstein
Download or read book The Arab Minority In Israel's Economy written by Noah Lewin-epstein and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-07-11 with total page 179 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Arab Minority in Israel's Economy considers the Arab population as an integral, albeit disadvantaged, part of Israeli society. Using data from a thirty-year period, the book looks at Arab participation in the economy, especially in the labor market, showing how significant socioeconomic inequality persists despite a fundamental tenet of Israel's declaration of independence asserting equality of political and social rights of all its citizens. Taking an ethnic competition perspective, the authors explore the extent of inequality, uncovering the institutional and social processes that influence it. They examine the role of local labor markets and individual human resources, giving special attention to the growing labor force participation of Arab women. They also consider the gains of the majority Jewish population that have resulted from competition and economic discrimination against Arabs. Although the Arab community in Israel has been studied in the past, this book is unique in its detailed analysis of employment activity within and outside of the Arab sector and in examining both Arabs and Jews within the stratification system. The book fosters deeper understanding of Israeli society and of multi-ethnic societies more generally.
Book Synopsis Promises in the Promised Land by : Vered Kraus
Download or read book Promises in the Promised Land written by Vered Kraus and published by Praeger. This book was released on 1990-05-23 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From its beginning as an independent state, Israel has been beset by the divisions and tensions that characterize most ethnically mixed societies. This extensively detailed analysis accounts for status attainment in Israeli society by investigating the process of stratification. It documents what happened to Arabs as well as Jewish immigrants and their children by tracing not only the socioeconomic locations, but also the proximate social determinants of the locations of significant ethnic, cultural, gender, and religious groups. Many of the research findings in this timely study have significant implications for social policy in Israel and elsewhere.

Book Synopsis Shifting Ethnic Boundaries and Inequality in Israel by : Aziza Khazzoom
Download or read book Shifting Ethnic Boundaries and Inequality in Israel written by Aziza Khazzoom and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 2008-03-07 with total page 466 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why do racial and ethnic groups discriminate against each other? The most common sociological answer is that they want to monopolize scarce resources—good jobs or top educations—for themselves. This book offers a different answer, showing that racial and ethnic discrimination can also occur to preserve particular group identities. Shifting Ethnic Boundaries and Inequality in Israel focuses on the early period of Israeli statehood to examine how the European Jewish founders treated Middle Eastern Jewish immigrants. The author argues that, shaped by their own unique encounter with European colonialism, the European Jews were intent on producing Israel as part of the West. To this end, they excluded and discriminated against those Middle Eastern Jews who threatened the goal of Westernization. Blending quantitative and qualitative evidence, Aziza Khazzoom provides a compelling rationale for the emergence of ethnic identity and group discrimination, while also suggesting new ways to understand Israeli-Palestinian relations.

Book Synopsis Ethnic Stratification and Economic Inequality around the World by : Max Haller in collaboration
Download or read book Ethnic Stratification and Economic Inequality around the World written by Max Haller in collaboration and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-03 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The modern world is characterised by pervasive economic inequalities. Strong economic growth in some developing countries has contributed to a degree to a reduction in the levels of inequality between nations, yet inequality within nations remains high and in some cases, continues to increase. Ethnic Stratification and Economic Inequality around the World investigates the reasons for these striking differences, exploring the coincidence and interaction between economic stratification and ethnic differentiation. Drawing on extensive international survey and statistical data, the author develops a new theory and concrete hypotheses concerning the conditions which lead toward extreme inequality and those which tend toward greater equality. A systematic examination of the interaction between class structures, social stratification and ethnic differentiation, this book sheds light on the manner in which the resulting social structures produce different levels of economic inequality, offering a fivefold typology of patterns of ethnic stratification, which can be applied to present-day world regions. Drawing on the work of Max Weber to provide a rigorous investigation of inequality around the world, it demonstrates what 'sociology as a science of social reality' can significantly contribute to our understanding of global economic stratification. The book is relevant for a wide social-scientific audience, particularly for sociologists, economists and political scientists working in a comparative perspective.
Book Synopsis Ethnicity, Religion and Class in Israeli Society by : Eliezer Ben-Rafael
Download or read book Ethnicity, Religion and Class in Israeli Society written by Eliezer Ben-Rafael and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1991-02-21 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first major sociological analysis of the characteristics and interrelationships of ethnicity, religion, and socio-economic class in Israeli society. Although much has been written about the various distinctions between Sephardi and Ashkenazi Jews, this volume argues for a more sophisticated approach than the rather crude divisions that have formed the basis of most works on the subject. The authors include categories largely overlooked in sociological studies on Israel such as middle class Israelis from Asia and Africa, and working-class Israelis from Europe. The data acquired from this rich ethnic mix leads to the analysis of a wide range of theoretical issues that casts fresh light on social cleavages within Israel in particular and society in general.

Book Synopsis Continuity and Change by : Rita James Simon
Download or read book Continuity and Change written by Rita James Simon and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1978-07-28 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this detailed 1978 study, Professor Rita J. Simon examines two significant ethnic communities in Israel: one of ultra-Orthodox Jews, and the other of Israeli Arabs. The Jews form a tiny but cohesive group with a strong sense of pride in their heritage and values. The Arabs, who comprise thirteen percent of the total population of Israel, occupy a politically and culturally sensitive position within that state. The author argues that despite these and obvious other cultural differences the two communities are akin in their separateness from the mainstream of Israeli society. She presents explanations of how and why both groups maintain cultural values and social patterns that prevent their assimilation into and acceptance by the broader society. Continuity and Change is significant as a study of contemporary social conditions in Israel, of sources of conflict within that society, as of implications that these conflicts have for the future.
