Book Synopsis Ethiopian records of the Menilek era by : Bairu Tafla
Download or read book Ethiopian records of the Menilek era written by Bairu Tafla and published by Otto Harrassowitz Verlag. This book was released on 2000 with total page 576 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The quality of a scholarly presentation at least in the humanities and social sciences depends entirely on the availability of documentation. Though Menilek's era is one of the fortunate periods in this respect, some aspects are nonetheless more thinly substantiated than others and, hence, fresh documents can certainly enrich our knowledge. Most of the ministerial papers of Menilek's government were lost in the decades that followed his fatal illness. But some have survived, thank State Councillor Alfred Ilg. During his 28-years' uninterrupted service to the Ethiopian government, Bitwaddad Ilg collected and preserved papers of all kinds - letters, contracts, concession papers, proclamations, certificates of merit and appointments as well as receipts and notes - from which the 312 documents contained in the present volume have been culled. The facsimiles are accompanied by an English translation, introduction, annotation and index.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This handbook provides a comprehensive account of the languages spoken in Ethiopia, exploring both their structures and features and their function and use in society. The first part of the volume provides background and general information relating to Ethiopian languages, including their demographic distribution and classification, language policy, scripts and writing, and language endangerment. Subsequent parts are dedicated to the four major language families in Ethiopia - Cushitic, Ethiosemitic, Nilo-Saharan, and Omotic - and contain studies of individual languages, with an initial introductory overview chapter in each part. Both major and less-documented languages are included, ranging from Amharic and Oromo to Zay, Gawwada, and Yemsa. The final part explores languages that are outside of those four families, namely Ethiopian Sign Language, Ethiopian English, and Arabic. With its international team of senior researchers and junior scholars, The Oxford Handbook of Ethiopian Languages will appeal to anyone interested in the languages of the region and in African linguistics more broadly.

Book Synopsis The Bible in Ethiopia by : Curt Niccum
Download or read book The Bible in Ethiopia written by Curt Niccum and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2014-05-28 with total page 367 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Ethiopic version provides a window into the state of the Greek Bible as it circulated in East Africa at the end of the fourth century. It is, therefore, an extremely important witness to the Bible's early transmission history, yet its testimony has typically been ignored or misunderstood by text critics. This study examines the history of the book of Acts in Ethiopia and reconstructs its earliest attainable text, which then is assessed using the latest text-critical methods. It therefore provides a solid base for interpreting the data of this key witness and lays the groundwork for future text-critical work in Ethiopic and other early versions.
Book Synopsis The Body in Language by : Matthias Brenzinger
Download or read book The Body in Language written by Matthias Brenzinger and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2014-07-17 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Body in Language: Comparative studies of Linguistic Embodiment provides new insights into the theory of linguistic embodiment in its universal and cultural aspects. The contributions of the volume offer theoretical reflections on grammaticalization, lexical semantics, philosophy, multimodal communication and - by discussing metaphorization and metonymy in figurative language - on cognitive linguistics in general. Case studies contribute first-hand data on embodiment from more than 15 languages and present findings on the body in language in diverse cultures from various continents. Embodiment fundamentally underlies human conceptualization and the present discussions reveal a wide range of target domains in conceptual transfers with the body as the source domain.
