Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The United States and its Western allies donate millions of dollars in emergency aid to alleviate the effects of the Ethiopian famine. Despite this aid, the Marxist regime in Ethiopia continues resolutely hostile to the United States and a firm friend to the Soviet Union whose emergency aid has been minimal. Moreover, the regime is pressing ahead vigorously with its socialist programs of population resettlement, agricultural collectivization, and state control of the economy, even though these programs may aggravate the effects of the famine. This important book, based on extensive first hand knowledge, traces events in Ethiopia over the last decade or so and offers much new information. Korn shows how Ethiopia switched from being an ally of the United States to an ally of the Soviet Union and how various efforts by the United States to regain Ethiopia’s friendship have failed. He discusses the coming to power of Colonel Mengistu, his ruthless methods, and his utter commitment to Marxism-Leninism. Korn explores the effects of Marxist rule and the famine on the Ethiopian people. He looks at the civil war in Eritrea and Tigray and at other threats to the regime from both inside and outside the country and explores how the situation is likely to develop in the immediate future.

Book excerpt: Examines China’s involvement in Ethiopia as the latter embarks on modernization and economic development. This comprehensive study of China-Ethiopia relations examines why China—an economic and emerging global power—has built relations with Ethiopia and why Ethiopia has responded by singling out China as a partner in its quest for economic development. Using middle-range theory and field research, Aaron Tesfaye focuses on three sets of phenomena: political, economic, and strategic. He explores the following questions: Why are China and Ethiopia building relations at this juncture of globalization? What motivates China’s role in helping build Ethiopia’s infrastructure, and is Ethiopia’s debt to China sustainable? What can Ethiopia offer China in terms of strategic interest in the Horn of Africa and the Red Sea littoral, which is now the most sought out area for military bases by regional and international forces? Tesfaye argues that China’s ability to meet Africa’s tremendous demand for capital and technology is a reflection of its economic and military rise and evidence that the Asian Century has arrived, ushering in a new global reality. “This is an excellent contribution to South-South relations in general, and China-Africa scholarship in particular.” — Edson Ziso, author of A Post State-Centric Analysis of China-Africa Relations: Internationalisation of Chinese Capital and State-Society Relations in Ethiopia

Book excerpt: When the oppressive Marxist-Leninst dictatorship of the Derg collapsed in 1991, there was hope that a new era might begin for a democratic Ethiopia. However, backed by the United States, the Ethiopian Peoples Revolutionary Front established a government that would not share power. Instead of a transition to democracy, the EPRF denied opposition parties meaningful participation in elections, violated human rights, and intensified ethnic distrust among the people. According to critics, repressions of the government are on a scale equivalent to those of the world's worst dictatorships. Vestal examines the plight of the Ethiopian people and counters questionable government pronouncements. He concludes with suggestions for a revised U.S. policy toward Ethiopia and for peaceful negotiations between the government and its political opposition to develop a more democratic approach. Ethiopia, an African nation with close ties to the United States dating from World War II, is a troubled land. When the oppressive Marxist-Leninist dictatorship of the Derg collapsed in 1991, there was hope that a new era might begin for a democratic Ethiopia. However, backed by the U.S., the Ethiopian People's Revolutionary Democratic Front established a government that would not share power. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The terrible 1984 famine in Ethiopia focused the world's attention on the country and the issue of aid as never before. Anyone over the age of 30 remembers something of the events - if not the original TV pictures, then Band Aid and Live Aid, Geldof and Bono. Peter Gill was the first journalist to reach the epicentre of the famine and one of the TV reporters who brought the tragedy to light. This book is the story of what happened to Ethiopia in the 25 years following Live Aid: the place, the people, the westerners who have tried to help, and the wider multinational aid business that has come into being. We saved countless lives in the beginning and continued to save them now, but have we done much else to transform the lives of Ethiopia's poor and set them on a 'development' course that will enable the country to do without us?

Book excerpt: ... what people are saying about this book ...'A marvelous recounting of Ethiopian and world history during those years. Mandatory reading for anyone interested in Third World relations and certainly for anyone who seeks to understand contemporary Ethiopian or Horn of Africa affairs.'?Foreign Service Journal?A significant primary source in its first hand account by a meticulously observant insider.'?Foreign Affairs?Commands attention and respect. John Spencer's personal, candid, and basically reliable record will have an honored place in the contemporary annals of that tortured country.'?Times Literary Supplement?Spencer is one of the very few living people in a position to describe Ethiopia's efforts to survive during those years.'?Library Journal?Spencer was privy to many important decisions. Of particular interest is his account of Haile Sellassie's disenchantment with the U.S.'?Publisher's Weekly? After the hard fate which befell the Emperor and his notables, Spencer is maybe the only one of the old regime's key persons still alive. There is hardly a single page one would want to miss.'?Sture Linner in Svenska Dagbladet?I found Ethiopia at Bay intensely interesting, sad and even tragic in the Greek mode. What a series of missed opportunities, anachronistic colonial arrogances, and western shortsightedness! The book would be enormously instructive to students of international relations generally.'?Lincoln Gordon, former President, Johns Hopkins University?Valuable indeed, Especially significant is Spencer's cogent analysis of the Emperor himself. Recommended for college, university, and larger public libraries.'?Choice.

Book excerpt: My Journey with the United Nations and Quest for the Horn of Africa’s Unity and Justice for Ethiopia by Kidane Alemayehu My Journey with the United Nations and Quest for the Horn of Africa's Unity and Justice for Ethiopia is a landmark in the annals of Ethiopian literature and history. It gives a huge assignment to the present and future generations of Ethiopians – namely that justice must be done, if not today, then tomorrow, and if not tomorrow, then the day after tomorrow. The Catholic Church, as the Universal Church, cannot remain mum in the face of such horrendous accusations supported by evidence. It is our fervent hope that, as Vicar of Jesus His Holiness, Pope Francis, who is already well known for his humility and steadfast stand for justice, will address this outstanding issue of apology to the Ethiopian people.
