Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ethical Teachings in Old English Literature The special object of this treatise on Old English books and authors is an ethical one rather than linguistic or critical. Technical and minute discussion is purposely made subordinate to as brief and popular a presentation of the theme as the subject-matter will allow. The more thoroughly these earlier writers are studied, the more apparent it will be that a truly devout and religious temper pervades them. It is hoped that the interpretation of this spirit, as it is revealed in these pre-Elizabethan and pre-Reformation English poets and prose writers, may prove of essential service to all English literary students and, most especially, to those engaged in clerical and homiletic studies. The author can desire nothing more as to these papers, than that the pleasure and profit of their reading may be even approximately equal to that of their preparation. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ethical Readings From the Bible Many educators as well as parents feel that there is a distinct place in our schools for the ethical precepts of the Bible. They believe that our youth should be familiar with the terse and pungent proverbs, the simple and picturesque parables, and the sublime expressions of reverence which the Bible contains. This is true if it is only looked upon as great literature, but when we consider the fact that our highest moral and ethical standards as a modern civilized nation are largely derived from the Bible it seems obvious that our youth should become familiar with the outline of those ethical teachings. That this ancient classic puts those teachings so plainly that they need no comment will be quite apparent to any one reading the selections here gathered together. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this highly innovative study, Ian Green examines the complete array of Protestant titles published in England from the 1530s to the 1720s. These range from the large specialist volumes at the top to cheap tracts at the bottom, from radical on one wing to conservative on the other, and from instructive and devotional manuals to edifying-cum-entertaining works such as religious verse and cautionary tales. Wherever possible the author adopts a statistical approach to permit a focus on those works which sold most copies over a number of years, and in an annotated Appendix provides a brief description of over seven hundred best selling or steady selling religious titles of the period. A close study of these texts and the forms in which they were offered to the public suggests a rapid diversification of both the types of work published and of the readerships at which they were targeted. It also demonstrates shrewd publishers' frequent attempts to plug gaps in a rapidly expanding market. Where previous studies of print have tended to focus on the polemical and the sensational, this one highlights the didactic, devotional, and consensual elements found in most steady selling works. It is also suggested that in these works there were at least three Protestantisms on offer an orthodox, clerical version, a moralistic, rational version favoured by the educated laity, and a popular version that was barely Protestant at all and that the impact of these probably varied both within and between different readerships. These conclusions shed much light not only on the means by which English Protestantism was disseminated, but also on the doctrinally and culturally diffused nature of English Protestantism by the end of the Stuart period. Both the text and the appendix should prove invaluable to anyone interested in the history of the Reformation or in printing as a medium of education and communication in early modern England.

Five of them only were published, owing to want of space, and some of these were curtailed. I have now been asked to republish the whole, and in so doing I have restored all the original passages and added some others. In the main, however, the chapters remain as at first written, and, though the necessity for brevity has caused some points to be assumed which, in a larger treatise, would have been more fully explained, it has, perhaps, the advantage of appealing to many readers who would not take up an elaborate philosophical work. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Guesses at Truths: Ethical, Social, Political and Literary A history of religious beliefs would be a history of the progress of the human mind. In its earliest form religion exists as a blind awe of the forces of Nature and as a propitiation of some threatening and powerful unseen influence. Its first aim' is self protection, and its way to self-protection is sought in sacrifice. From Devil-worship, with its panic stricken immolation of human victims, to Nature worship, with its recognition of a something benevolent and beautiful to be adored, as well as zfsomething horrible to be flattered and appeased, is a great stride. The instinct is no longer one of terror only. Gratitude and affection have their word to say. Sacrifice con tinnes, but its form is modified, and to follow the main trend of belief is to approach more and more nearly to an ideal of trust in the good intention of the unknown Powers. A certain element of cruelty, of savagery, of unreason, survives unto this day, but for many thousands of years the mind of man has striven to emancipate itself from its original cowardice, and with the birth of Monotheism it became essential to associate the idea of the Creator and Ruler with attributes of mercy and justice. Shall not the Judge of all the earth do right 3 The 34 beforethis life and after. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
