Book Synopsis The Zen Poetry of DOGEN: Verses from the Mountain of Eternal Peace by : STEVEN HEINE
Download or read book The Zen Poetry of DOGEN: Verses from the Mountain of Eternal Peace written by STEVEN HEINE and published by Fivestar. This book was released on 2023-03-19 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THIS VOLUME contains a complete translation of Dōgen's collection of thirty-one-syllable Japanese poetry, or waka, along with a translation of a representative selection of his Chinese verse, or kanshi. Although Dōgen is generally considered to be more of a philosopher than a poet, his verse has great value for several reasons. First, the poems, most of which were composed on the mountain peak of Eiheiji Temple (the Temple of Eternal Peace, as pictured on the front cover), are beautiful, displaying Dōgen's remarkable facility with language. Second, the Japanese and Chinese collections illuminate key aspects of his life and thought not revealed in his prose writings, including his trips to China and Kamakura, his feelings about Kyoto while living in Eiheiji in the northern provinces, and his feelings about death.

Book Synopsis Dogen and Soto Zen by : Steven Heine
Download or read book Dogen and Soto Zen written by Steven Heine and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2015-02-26 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dogen and Soto Zen builds upon and further refines a continuing wave of enthusiastic popular interest and scholarly developments in Western appropriations of Zen. In the last few decades, research in English and European languages on Dogen and Soto Zen has grown, aided by an increasing awareness on both sides of the Pacific of the important influence of the religious movement and its founder. The school has flourished throughout the medieval and early modern periods of Japanese history, and it is still spreading and reshaping itself in the current age of globalization. This volume continues the work of Steven Heine's recently published collection, Dogen: Textual and Historical Studies, featuring some of the same outstanding authors as well as some new experts who explore diverse aspects of the life and teachings of Zen master Dogen (1200-1253), the founder of the Soto Zen sect (or Sotoshu) in early Kamakura-era Japan. The contributors examine the ritual and institutional history of the Soto school, including the role of the Eiheji monastery established by Dogen as well as rites and precepts performed there and at other temples.
Book Synopsis From Peking to Mandalay by : Reginald Fleming Sir Johnston
Download or read book From Peking to Mandalay written by Reginald Fleming Sir Johnston and published by DigiCat. This book was released on 2022-09-15 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The journey of which an account is given in the following pages was not undertaken in the special interests of geographical or other science nor in the service of any Government. The author's chief object was to gratify a long-felt desire to visit those portions of the Chinese Empire which are least known to Europeans, and to acquire some knowledge of the various tribes subject to China that inhabit the wild regions of Chinese Tibet and north-western Yunnan. Though nearly every part of the Eighteen Provinces has in recent years been visited and described by European travelers, the author's route between Tachienlu and Li-chiang was one which—so far as he is aware—no British subject had ever traversed before him, and of which no description in book-form has hitherto appeared in any European language.

Download or read book Donors of Longmen written by Amy McNair and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 2007-01-01 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Donors of Longmen is the first work in a Western language to re-create the history of the Longmen Grottoes, one of China's great stone sculpture treasure houses. Longmen, a UNESCO World Heritage site located near the old capital of Luoyang in modern Henan Province, consists of thousands of ancient cave chapels and shrines containing Buddhist icons of all sizes that were carved into the towering limestone cliffs from the fifth to the eighth centuries. Beyond its superb sculpture, Longmen also preserves thousands of engraved dedicatory inscriptions by its donors, who included emperors and empresses, aristocrats, court eunuchs, artisans, monks, nuns, lay societies, female palace officials, male civil and military officials, and ordinary lay believers. Based on wide reading of both Asian and Western-language scholarship and careful analysis of the architecture, epigraphy, and iconography of the site, Amy McNair provides a rich and detailed examination of the dynamics of faith, politics, and money at Longmen, beginning with the inception of the site at Guyang Grotto in 493 and concluding with the last major dated project, the forty-eight Amitabhas added to the Great Vairocana Image Shrine in 730. Through her sensitive and well-informed exploration of Longmen's huge repository of remarkable early sculpture, McNair gives voice to a wide array of medieval believers, many of them traditionally excluded from history. Hers will be the definitive work on Longmen for years to come.
